OSTEOPOROSIS:  Nutritional Causes, Prevention and Therapies
Many individuals rely on extra amounts of Calcium and Vitamin D when trying to treat and/or prevent
bone loss, and when unsuccessful, they generally resort to using drugs specifically formulated to stop
the progression of this disease.  Long-term effects of many of these medications are still unclear since
increased bone mass doesn't always translate into increased bone strength.  On the other hand, when
analyzing individual reasons for developing osteoporosis, it becomes clear that most factors can be
resolved through a change in lifestyle, or through individually-tailored nutritional supplementation.
Without the addition of weight-bearing exercise however, no program for the treatment or prevention
of osteoporosis can be considered complete.  Climbing stairs, running, lifting weights - and to some
extent walking - are all among those exercises considered beneficial in maintaining bone density, in contrast to activities such as swimming, which is less helpful for osteoporosis.

A Preventable and Treatable Bone Disease
    What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a silent disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Bone loss usually occurs slowly over time. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress without symptoms until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist.
Any bone can be affected, but of special concern are fractures of the hip and spine. A hip fracture almost always requires hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person's ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal or vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and deformity.
Millions of Americans are at risk. While women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease, men also suffer from osteoporosis. Indeed, twenty percent of men over the age of fifty have osteoporosis.
Fortunately, osteoporosis now can be diagnosed before fractures occur by measuring bone density. With early treatment, not only can fractures be prevented, but most patients can also avoid the pain and mobility problems associated with severe osteoporosis.

    Osteoporosis Screening
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women aged 65 and older be screened routinely for osteoporosis. The USPSTF recommends that routine screening begin at age 60 for women at increased risk for osteoporotic fractures There is good evidence that the risk for osteoporosis and fracture increases with age and other factors; bone density measurements accurately predict the risk for fractures in the short-term; treating asymptomatic women with osteoporosis reduces their risk for fracture. The USPSTF concludes that the benefits of screening and treatment are of at least moderate magnitude for women at increased risk by virtue of age or presence of other risk factors There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against routine osteoporosis screening in postmenopausal women who are younger than 60 or in women aged 60-64 who are not at increased risk for osteoporotic fractures Return to U.S. Preventive Services Task Force

Women's Health, Calcium Deficiency, and Bone Loss Women’s Health and Calcium
Often we speak of healthy bones and strong teeth, and most of us remember our parents' admonition to “drink your milk.” Though we may have resisted then, as adults we are now more aware of the need for calcium, and perhaps calcium supplements.
An adequate intake of calcium can help to prevent the bone loss associated with osteoporosis, a condition where the structure, or matrix, of bone is no longer as solid and strong as it should be. The bone matrix is composed of both a mineral component that includes both calcium salt and phosphate salt , and an organic component that is largely collagen fibers. The calcium and phosphate salts combine to form hydroxyapatite crystals and give bone its amazing tensile strength.
Bone matrix resembles a sponge when viewed through a microscope, with “stronger” tissue densest on the external surface of all bones, and with “softer” or less dense tissue towards the middle of some bones.
The mineral component makes up 60 to 70 percent of mature bone matrix, and the remainder is basically collagen and water. The mineral component provides strength and the organic component provides flexibility to bone (Alvioli, 1993).
    Calcium Deficiency
The mineral component of the bone matrix is intimately related to the levels of the minerals in the circulating blood. The regulation of mineral levels is such that if a person experiences a serum calcium deficiency, the bones surrender calcium to maintain the amounts needed in the blood for other body functions. Conversely, increased amounts of phosphorus from sources such as

Windows Media: Heart Scan (Coronary Artery Calcium Score) Recently called the "mammogram of the heart"; the EBT (Electron Beam Tomography) Heart Scan is a breakthrough in Early Detection and Cardiac Risk Assessment. Coronary artery calcium is a marker for plaque (fatty deposits) in a blood vessel. These calcium deposits form years before the first symptoms of heart disease, such as chest pain or shortness of breath, appear.
Lung Cancer Screening: Lung Cancer strikes 150,000 Americans each year. Despite recent advances in cancer treatment, the five-year survival for lung cancer patients remains only 14%. Only low-dose CT scans can detect the small nodules of lung cancer at an earlier and potentially more curable stage. Anyone who smokes, has a history of smoking or exposure other lung carcinogens such as asbestos could benefit from this exam.
3-D QCT Bone Densitometry: The bone density study provides the critical information you need to identify your risk of osteoporosis, a debilitating disease that can lead to bone fractures. An essential exam for all post-menopausal women, the 3-D QCT Bone Densitometry is more accurate than conventional DEXA bone studies.
