by dr. christine welch and cordie davis he pancreas is a gland in the abdominal cavity that produces enzymes which aid in digestion, and hormones such as insulin which regulate the metabolism of sugar. When the pancreas becomes diseased or injured the resulting condition is known as pancreatitis. Disorders of the pancreas are common in dogs and cats. An unhealthy pancreas will literally begin to digest itself causing severe illness and pain to your pet. There are several major causes of acute pancreatitis and certainly, the most common cause is the most preventable. Typically, clusters of pancreatitis are seen after Thanksgiving and other Holiday celebrations. Pet owners feed pets a feast of turkey and table scraps or other treats which are all loaded with fat. This can cause the pancreas to go into overdrive and make pets very sick. Dogs will have abdominal pain while cats will have more generalized discomfort. Some pets will become so ill they will collapse. Obese animals seem more prone to developing pancreatitis. This is probably due to the high level of fat that is already present in the blood. A bout of pancreatitis can also be brought on by the consumption of spoiled or contaminated food or water. It is a symptom of various infectious diseases and trauma or injury to the abdominal area, such as being hit by a car, can contribute to the development of the condition.

An Owner's Guide to Pet Care
Many pets are diagnosed as having pancreatitis. The information on this page is provided by to help you learn about the disease and how to care for your pet at home.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatic disorders occur frequently in the dog and cat. The pancreas is a gland in the abdomen that produces enzymes which aid in the digestion of food. It also produces some hormones such as insulin which are secreted into the blood. If, because of injury or disease, these digestive enzymes become activated within the pancreas before they are released, they will begin digesting the pancreas itself. This self-digestion causes severe inflammation called Pancreatitis which is associated with pain and tenderness of the abdomen. Pancreatitis is usually classified as either acute (occurs suddenly) or chronic (an ongoing condition).
Signs of Pancreatitis
The signs of pancreatitis usually occur suddenly in dogs and cats. You ll need to be aware of the signs so you can get treatment for your pet as soon as possible. A pet with pancreatitis will exhibit some or all of the following signs: lack of appetite, frequent vomiting and diarrhea which may contain blood. A pet may also drink more water than usual and vomit it soon after consumption. Weakness, inability to walk and abdominal tenderness or pain may be present. Body temperature will vary in pets with pancreatitis, but usually the temperature will be higher than normal at the onset of the disease and then fall to below normal as the condition continues. The eyes may become sunken, and the mouth and eyes may become very dry, indicating dehydration. These signs are not unique to pancreatitis; therefore your veterinarian may recommend tests to differentiate pancreatitis from other diseases.

CANINE PANCREATITIS
What is pancreatitis?
The pancreas is a vital organ which lies on the right side of the abdomen. It has two functions:
1)to produce enzymes which help in digestion of food and,
2)to produce hormones, such as insulin.
When the pancreas becomes inflamed, the disorder is called pancreatitis. It is a disease process that is seen commonly in the dog. There is no age, sex, or breed predisposition.
There are two main forms of acute (sudden onset) pancreatitis: 1) the mild, edematous form and, 2) the more severe, hemorrhagic form. A few dogs that recover from an acute episode of pancreatitis may continue to have recurrent bouts of the acute disease, known as chronic, relapsing pancreatitis. The associated inflammation allows digestive enzymes to spill into the abdominal cavity; this may result in secondary damage to surrounding organs, such as the liver, bile ducts, gall bladder, and intestines.
What causes it?
The cause of pancreatitis is not known; however, there may be several contributory factors. It is often associated with a rich, fatty meal. In some cases, it may be associated with the administration of cortisone; however, some dogs with pancreatitis do not have exposure to either.
Under normal conditions, digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas are activated when they reach the small intestines. In pancreatitis, these enzymes are activated prematurely in the pancreas instead of in the small intestines. This results in digestion of the pancreas itself. The clinical signs of pancreatitis are often variable, and the intensity of the disease will depend on the quantity of enzymes that are prematurely activated.

Your pancreas is a large gland behind your stomach and close to your duodenum. The pancreas secretes powerful digestive enzymes that enter the small intestine through a duct. These enzymes help you digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. The pancreas also releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. These hormones play an important part in metabolizing sugar. Pancreatitis is a rare disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed. Damage to the gland occurs when digestive enzymes are activated and begin attacking the pancreas. In severe cases, there may be bleeding into the gland, serious tissue damage, infection, and cysts. Enzymes and toxins may enter the bloodstream and seriously injure organs, such as the heart, lungs, and kidney. There are two forms of pancreatitis. The acute form occurs suddenly and may be a severe, life-threatening illness with many complications. Usually, the patient recovers completely. If injury to the pancreas continues, such as when a patient persists in drinking alcohol, a chronic form of the disease may develop, bringing severe pain and reduced functioning of the pancreas that affects digestion and causes weight loss.

INLEIDING

by Dr. Jennifer McKinnis, DVM The major function of the pancreas is to secrete enzymes that aid in the digestion of foods as well as enzymes that aid in the absorption of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. When the pancreas becomes inflamed, it is termed pancreatitis. Some factors believing to be involved in the development of pancreatitis are the following:
  • obesity ingestion of a large fatty-meal lack of blood flow to the pancreas drugs severe vomiting abdominal trauma or infection
Typically, the animal affected will be overweight with a history of ingesting a fatty meal. An animal with pancreatitis may exhibit signs such as vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, shock or even death. To diagnose pancreatitis, a thorough workup is necessary since the clinical signs are vague. Bloodwork is needed as well as a urinalysis and in some cases abdominal x-rays or ultrasound. Pancreatitis, when diagnosed, should be treated aggressively since it can be potentially fatal.

... Can pancreatitis affect the health of a child? My cousin was just diagnosed with pancreatitis, everyone keeps asking themselves why did the Gynecologist not know that she was ill? They did an emergency c-section and the baby is fine, but she is in critical/stable condition. Could this have been caused by the pregnancy? What is acute pancreatitis and what causes this? th April 1999 The pancreas has two important roles - one is to produce digestive enzymes that are passed into the digestive tract through a duct, and the other is to release hormones into the blood to control sugar levels. So the pancreas is both an exocrine and an endocrine gland. The pancreatic enzymes can become a danger to the pancreas itself if they become activated within the pancreatic tissues, and this is what happens in pancreatitis. The enzymes begin to digest the cells of the pancreas. Pancreatitis is an inflammatory process that produces different degrees of oedema, haemorrhage, and the destruction of pancreatic cells. It can be very serious. Acute pancreatitis means that the inflammation has suddenly appeared, whereas chronic pancreatitis means a more gradual process over a longer period of time. Pancreatitis is more common in adults than in children. There are several possible causes: disease of the biliary tract, for example: gall stones blocking the duct where it opens into the duodenum

What is the pancreas, and why is it needed?
The pancreas is a glandular organ that is tucked under the stomach and duodenum (first part of the small intestine) in the dog and cat. It has two functions: 1) exocrine - to produce the enzymes needed to digest food, and 2) endocrine - to produce hormones, including the hormone insulin, which facilitates the uptake and storage of glucose (sugar) and amino acids (proteins). What happens during a bout of Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, causing leakage of the digestive enzymes whereby the pancreas literally starts to "digest itself". Pancreatitis can be acute (sudden) or chronic (happening over a course of time). Both acute and chronic forms are serious and can be life-threatening, especially the acute form. What causes Pancreatitis?
