Lice, crabs or Cooties
  • This is an infestation of tiny, parasitic insects (singular louse) that attack the skin of the scalp, trunk, and pubic areas. Lice infestation is transmitted person-to-person and via intimate objects that tend to be shared (brushes, combs, towels, hats, etc.). Lice are 3-4 mm long, making them barely visible to the naked eye. Body lice are usually found in the seams of underclothing, and generally go to the body only to feed. Hair and pubic lice are located in these areas.
    Intense itching
  • Raw skin from scratching
  • Nits (tiny "willow buds") of lice eggs in hair

Current Periodicals Pediculosis is a condition in which head lice are present in the scalp and their eggs (nits) are found on the hair shaft. Head lice are extremely contagious BUT are not life-threatening. Treatment in combination with household cleaning usually is effective in eliminating the problem. The WCASD maintains a nit-free policy. This requires that students, who have contracted lice, show proof of treatment, and MUST be free of all live lice and nits, before being re-admitted to school. WEST CHESTER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENT/GUARDIAN LETTER ABOUT LICE Evidence of lice infestation has been found on your child. Lice are highly contagious and spread rapidly if treatment is not begun immediately. Anyone can get lice; it has nothing to do with being “clean or dirty.” “Nits” can live on a discarded hair for 10 days. TREATMENT MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 24 HOURS (CHECK WHEN COMPLETED) Check the entire family for evidence of lice. You should look for tiny white “nits” (eggs) that attach themselves to the hair shaft. (They are most easily seen at the base of the neck and around the ears. The “nits” look like dandruff flakes, but will be difficult to remove from the hair shaft.

Communicable Disease Fact Sheet Pediculosis What is pediculosis? Pediculosis is an infestation of the hairy parts of the body or clothing with the eggs, larvae or adults of lice. The crawling stages of this insect feed on human blood which can result in severe itching. Head lice are usually located on the scalp, crab lice in the pubic area and body lice along seams of clothing which travel to the skin to feed. Who gets pediculosis? Anyone may become louse infested under suitable conditions of exposure. Pediculosis is easily transmitted from person to person during direct contact. Head lice infestations are frequently found in school settings or institutions. Crab lice infestations can be found among sexually active individuals. Body lice infestation can be found in people living in crowded, unsanitary conditions where clothing is infrequently changed or laundered. How is pediculosis spread? For both head lice and body lice, transmission can occur during direct contact with an infested individual. Sharing of clothing and combs or brushes may also result in transmission of these insects. While other means are possible, crab lice are most often transmitted through sexual contact. What are the symptoms of pediculosis?

HEAD LICE (Pediculosis)
What Are Head Lice?
  • Lice are tiny insects that live on and crawl through the hair. They are gray, brown, or black and can be difficult to see.
  • Lice need human blood to survive and will die within 24 hours if they can not find a "meal".
  • Lice lay eggs (nits) on the hair close to the scalp. It takes about 6 days for the nits to hatch.
  • Nits are easier to see than lice. Nits are oval shaped and most often can been seen in the hair behind the ears or near the neck.
  • Head lice themselves are not a health hazard or a sign of uncleanliness, and are not responsible for the spread of any disease.
What Are the Symptoms?
  • Itching of the scalp is the most common symptom. Scratching can lead to skin sores and skin infections.
How Are Head Lice Spread?
  • Most often head lice are spread by head-to-head contact with another person who has lice.
  • Lice can be spread by wearing another person's hat or clothing, by using another person's comb, brush, or bedding, or by placing clothing worn by someone who has lice in a shared clothing storage compartment, locker, or a cloak room.

Parent/Student Information Handbook.. pediculosis (Lice) Lice aresmall, fastmoving, light gray insects which lay eggs or nits
http://www.ksd140.org/misc/handbook/22lice.htm
Parent/Student Information Handbook Pediculosis (Lice) Lice are small, fast-moving, light gray insects which lay eggs or "nits" in the hair, especially at the nape of the neck and about the ears. Nits resemble dandruff flakes, but appear on the hair strand itself, rather than the scalp. Nits do not brush off as dandruff, but rather are "glued-on" to hair strands. Head scratching and intense itching of the scalp are the two main symptoms which may indicate that the problem exists. Parents should watch for these symptoms at home and examine their children regularly to prevent spread of this condition. In the event head lice are detected at home, please notify the school immediately so we may begin the follow-up procedure in the classroom to determine if any other cases are present. Head lice do not spread disease, but are a nuisance which frequently occurs in school-age children. They have no socio-economic, racial, or ethnic preference. Anyone may get them, anytime! Prompt action by using a proper medicated shampoo (Rid, Kwell, or A200) by all family members is advised. If allergies exist, contact your family physician. Children may return to school once the nits have been removed from the hair with a fine tooth comb, following the initial treatment with the medicated shampoo. Please send a note with your child stating the name of the product used or the label of the product, to the attention of the school nurse. The district will be taking every precautionary measure to see that this condition is controlled at the school level and hope that you, as parents, will continue to check your children at home on a regular basis.

Pediculosis (Head Lice) Fact Sheet
What is pediculosis? Pediculosis is an infestation of the scalp and hair of the head with live larvae or adult head lice or nits (eggs). The crawling stages of the insect feed upon human blood which results in severe itching. Nits are very small round eggs that stick to the hair close to the scalp. Head lice can be found anywhere on the scalp, especially behind the ears and just above the hairline along the nape of the neck. Occasionally head lice may be found in the moustache, beard, eyelashes and eyebrows. Who gets pediculosis? Anyone can become infested with head lice under suitable conditions of exposure regardless of age, sex, race, or standards of personal hygiene. Head lice are most common in children. Head lice infestations are found frequently in home, child care, school, or institutional settings. How is pediculosis transmitted? Head lice cannot jump or fly. Head-to-head contact or sharing of personal items (such as combs, brushes, hats, scarves, jackets, sweaters, sheets, pillows, mattresses, sleeping bags, blankets, bedding, car seats, or upholstered furniture) of a person with head lice may result in transmission from one individual to another. Lice from animals do not infest humans. They may transfer to a person for a short time but do not reproduce and do not require treatment. What are the symptoms of pediculosis?

Head Lice (Pediculosis)
Life Cycle
The head louse is one of three types of lice that infest people. These tiny insects (about 1/10 to 1/8 of an inch long) make their home in human hair and feed on human blood. Head lice multiply rapidly, laying small greyish-colored oval-shaped eggs (called nits) which they glue to the base of the hair, close to the scalp. Signs of Head Lice Infestation
Although head lice are hard to find, you can see the nits if you look closely. They are most often found along the hairline at the back of the head and neck and behind the ears. Nits should not be confused with an accumulation of hair spray, hair gels or dandruff. Dandruff can be easily flicked off the hair; nits cannot because they are firmly attached to individual hairs. Who Can Get Head Lice?
Anyone can get head lice. They are not a sign of being dirty. Most people don't know they are infested until they see the nits or lice. One telltale sign of head lice is a persistent itching of the scalp which is sometimes accompanied by infected scratch marks or what appears to be a rash. How Does an Infestation Occur?

In Italy, an increase has occurred in the number of cases of pediculosis ( Pediuculus capitis ), which occur primarily in school-based outbreaks. The number of reported cases, which undoubtedly represents an underestimate, rose from 3449 in 1990 to 4907 (in 1009 different outbreaks) in 1999. Pediculosis is caused by a tiny louse (2-3 mm in length) that lives exclusively in the scalp of humans. Lice feed on human blood, and each day the females lay 8-10 eggs, which are firmly fixed to the hair shaft with a collagenous substance.

What is head lice infestation or Pediculosis?

Head lice infestation (pediculosis), one of the most common contagious childhood diseases is caused by barely visible insects found almost exclusively on the human scalp. Contrary to popular belief, head lice infestation has little to do with personal hygiene. In fact, head lice are totally non-discriminating, and can infest people of any lifestyle, age, race, or socio-economic status. Since lice multiply and spread quickly from host to host.

Last Revised: December 2002 Pediculosis is an animal parasite that usually is found in the pubic hair of men and women. Also called crabs or pubic lice, it may be found on the hair of the chest, underarm and face. Crabs do not live on scalp hair. What are the symptoms of pediculosis?
The main symptom of pediculosis is itching. The itching is thought to be caused by an allergy to the bite of the louse. You may not always have itching. There also may be tiny dark brown spots on the skin or undergarments where they come in contact with the affected area. How is pediculosis spread?
Crabs are most often spread during bodily contact with a person who has crabs. Occasionally, lice may be spread by towels, clothing, bed sheets or toilet seats. Adult lice can live up to ten days, while eggs (nits) live no longer than one month in clothing or bedding. Prevention of pediculosis.

What is pediculosis?
Pediculosis is an infestation of lice. Body lice infestations occur primarily on clothing, especially along the seams of inner surfaces and the adjacent area of the skin. Pubic/crab lice infest hairy parts of the body including the groin, eyebrows, eyelashes and facial hair. Both body lice and pubic/crab lice feed on human blood and can cause severe local itching. Who gets pediculosis?
Anyone can become infested with body lice or pubic/crab lice, regardless of age, sex, race, or standards of personal hygiene. Body lice infestation are usually found in people living in crowded, unsanitary conditions where clothing is infrequently changed or laundered. Pubic/crab lice infestations are mainly found among sexually active individuals. How are body lice and pubic/crab lice spread?
Body lice are spread from person-to-person through close direct contact with a lice infested area of a person or through sharing of unlaundered clothes or bedding that had recent contact with an infested person. While other means are possible, pubic/crab lice are usually spread through sexual contact. Since nits (louse eggs) must be laid by adult lice and need warm temperatures to hatch, the chances of nits being spread from person-to-person are minimal.
