What is Helicobacter pylori?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium (germ) that lives in the inner lining of the stomach. It produces a number of chemicals that damage the lining of the stomach. Once the infection is present, it persists for many years, if not for life.
How common is Helicobacter pylori infection in Australia?
About 40% of persons over 40 years of age are infected with this germ compared to less than 10% of children. Most people are infected in childhood and in Australia the risk of becoming infected is now much less than in the past. There is no difference in infection rate between men and women.
H. pylori is more common in older people and in certain ethnic populations (eg. Middle Eastern, Asian and Eastern European). In general the germ is more common in people from a poorer background, people living in institutions (eg. mentally handicapped) and those who have migrated from countries where infection is more common, especially the developing world. However, any individual may be infected.

Peptic Ulcers
Dear Relexology Rex... I am a reflexologist and am treating a woman that has both a gastric ulcer and a doudunal ulcer, also she was diagnosed with h.pylori wich is probably the cause for the ulcers. she was treated with anti-biotics but they didn't help the first time so now she is beenig treated again with anti biotics.
My question is how can I help treat peptic ulcers with reflexology?
Thank you very much,
Liad Schwartz Dear Liad... You are correct in that h-pylori has been theorized to be the bacteria which is the underlying cause of many peptic ulcers ie., gastric -inner wall of the stomach, duodenal - duodenum, these being two of the most common types of peptic ulcers. If your client's ulcer has been determined to be stress related, then reflexology combined with the proper anti-biotics work very well. The areas to concentrate on would be the diaphragm for relaxation and the area related to the location of the ulcers. It would be important to work on them, at first, at least 3 times a week.
Now I am going to go into my teaching and legal mode and suggest that you don't refer to what you are doing as treating someone with a medical condition. This is considered practicing medicine without a license and is illegal.

A peptic ulcer is a sore or hole in the lining of the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). People of any age can get an ulcer, and women are affected just as often as men. Over 25 million Americans will suffer from an ulcer at some point during their lifetime. The good news is that most ulcers are caused by an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori , and can be cured in about two weeks with antibiotics. Ulcer Facts

Peptic Ulcers
Chapter 24. Chronic Illnesses
An ulcer is a sore or break in one of the body's protective tissue layers. Ulcers located in the stomach (gastric ulcers) and ulcers in the first section of the small intestine (duodenal ulcers) are grouped under the label "peptic ulcers." They afflict men, women, and children. Causes Persons with a family history of peptic ulcers tend to be at greater risk for getting them. A bacteria called Heliobacter pylori may cause about 80% of peptic ulcers. About 20% of peptic ulcers may be caused by the repeated use of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and naproxen sodium. Signs and Symptoms Common symptoms of peptic ulcers are:
  • A gnawing or burning feeling just above the navel within 1 1/2-3 hours after eating Pain that feels like indigestion, heartburn, or hunger. The pain often awakens the person at night. Pain relief comes within minutes with food or antacids Bloody, black, or tarry-looking stools Nausea or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds Weight loss without trying or loss of appetite Paleness and weakness if anemia is present
Treatment and Care Doctors can diagnose peptic ulcers with an analysis of gastric acids, X-rays, and/or endoscopy. Endoscopy is done by passing a long tube through the mouth and into the stomach and small intestine. It is the most accurate way to diagnose a peptic ulcer.

Peptic ulcers affect approximately 10 percent of the U.S. population. These ulcers occur in a spot where the lining of the stomach has eroded, leaving an open wound. Ulcers result when there is either an over-production of acid in the stomach or when the stomach fails to provide protection against it.
The symptoms of peptic ulcers may include: chronic stomach pain with a burning or gnawing sensation, usually about an hour after eating. Other possible symptoms include nausea, vomiting and headache. Relief often occurs by taking antacids, eating, vomiting and drinking large amounts of water.
There are many factors that increase secretion of stomach acid. Anxiety and stress have long been related to ulcers. Also, taking aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for long periods of time can increase acid production. Large doses of vitamin supplements like vitamin C may cause a tear in the stomach lining. Caffine and heavy smoking can increase stomach acid, and may delay healing. There is also recent evidence of a common type of bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, found in persons who have ulcers. A doctor can make this determination with blood tests, etc.
If you have an ulcer or think you may have one, seek medical help, eat six small meals a day instead of three large ones, and eliminate spicey foods, caffine, and smoking. Recent evidence suggests that milk, once thought to be a soothing remedy for ulcers, may increase stomach acid production. Aloe Vera juice can aid in pain relief and speed up the healing process.

RELATED NEWS Link between anxiety and peptic ulcers Susan Aldridge, PhD In a new survey, people reporting symptoms of anxiety were also more likely to say they had peptic ulcer disease.
It was long believed that worry gave you ulcers. Then research showed that infection with the common bacterium Helicobacter pylori was a major risk factor, and the link with anxiety was neglected. However, researchers at the University of California at San Diego now report that people with generalised anxiety do seem to be more likely to suffer form ulcers. Generalised anxiety disorder affects three to four per cent of Americans and is characterised by feelings of unremitting worry, dread and lack of energy. In a wide-ranging survey, those reporting anxiety were more likely to also report suffering from gastric ulcers. The more anxiety symptoms they had, the more likely they were to report ulcers. The researchers don't know why such a link exists. It may be that stress undermines the immune response to

http://www.summitviewclinic.com/H_pylori_&_peptic_ulcers.htm
HELICOBACTER PYLORI AND PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE
The bacteria Helicobacter Pylori has within the last couple of years revolutionized our approach and understanding of peptic ulcer diseases and gastritis. It is now clear that the common form of peptic ulcer is an infectious disease that should be treated with antibiotics, rather than with conventional anti-ulcer therapy. Almost all patients with duodenal ulcer and 80% of patients with gastric ulcers are infected with H-Pylori. The organism is also associated with chronic active gastritis (stomach inflammation) and may also play a role in non-ulcer dyspepsia (the belching, bloating symptoms of indigestion). H-Pyloric infection has also been associated with a slightly increased risk of gastric cancer. Who is at risk? There is an increased prevalence of infection with advancing age. The prevalence in healthy persons younger than 30 is 10%, rising to 60% in persons over the age of 60. Transmission is likely person to person. Why treat H-Pylori? It has been shown that if standard treatment is employed for duodenal or gastric ulcer, i.e. use of Tagamet, Zantac or antacids, that although a patient will have fairly good healing, without treatment of H-Pylori the annual recurrence rate of duodenal ulcer is approximately 85% versus only 5% in those treated for H-Pylori infection. In other works, without treatment of the infection, the ulcer will usually reoccur. Treatment for H-Pylori. This includes any of a number of treatment regimes which are discussed on the next page. It should also be mentioned that a person being treated for this condition should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, i.e. Advil, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, and aspirin therapy. They should also avoid alcohol.

Tips from Other Journals
Previous Next Omeprazole and Recurrent Bleeding of Peptic Ulcers Approximately 20 percent of patients have recurrent bleeding of peptic ulcers following endoscopic treatment. These recurrences often require emergency surgery and are associated with a high rate of mortality. In vitro data suggest that platelet aggregation is enhanced at higher levels of gastric pH. However, studies using intravenous histamine H -receptor antagonists to prevent recurrent bleeding have produced conflicting results. In addition, tolerance to this class of drugs develops within 72 hours when they are given intravenously, negating their ability to suppress acid production. Lau and colleagues performed a randomized study to determine whether high-dose therapy with a proton-pump inhibitor would decrease the risk of subsequent upper gastrointestinal bleeding after endoscopy. Patients enrolled in the study were adults admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. All study subjects underwent upper endoscopy within 24 hours of admission, at which time any active bleeding ulcer or nonbleeding ulcer with visible vessels was injected with epinephrine followed by direct thermocoagulation with a heater probe. Testing for Helicobacter pylori infection was also performed at the time of endoscopy.

  • An ulcer is a small sore or break in the lining of the stomach or just beyond the stomach in the first part of the intestine, called the duodenum. Once the break occurs, it is gradually eroded and deepened by the corrosive effect of acidic gastric juices to form an ulcer. A duodenal ulcer is located in the duodenum. This is about three times more common than gastric ulcers. A gastric ulcer is located in the stomach. Collectively these are known as peptic ulcers. Peptic ulcers can develop either quickly or over a long period of time.

    Biomedical Research Sheds
    New Light on Peptic Ulcers
From the March 24, 1999 edition of "The Journal-Record" This is not a new story, but an old one. Yet, amazingly, many people do not know it. Peptic ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection, not by stress! (Although stress can play a role in some peptic ulcers.) For most of my medical career, it was the prevailing paradigm that peptic ulcers were caused by stress. This was manifested by the overproduction of acid, as ulcers cannot form in the absence of acid or the enzymes in the stomach and intestine that degrade the food we eat. Thus, almost all treatments for ulcers involved some form of reduction of acid secretion. First we used medications that blocked the activity of the vagus nerve, which innervates (goes to) the stomach. This even resulted in "vagotomy," an operation in which the vagus nerve was severed surgically. Medically, antacids in the form of solutions and pills that would "soak up" acid were commonly used. Later, drugs that blocked acid secretion were popular. Thus, a decade ago, the general view was "stress, acid, enzymes." I can best summarize the thinking in the medical profession 30 years ago by quoting an article from a major medical publication of the period: "Certain patterns of relationship were more common in "ulcer" families. Thus the mother of ulcer patients tended to have psychogenic symptoms, and to be striving, obsessive and dominate in the home; fathers tended to be steady, unassertive, and passive. Many ways of life seem to influence the disease such as diet, alcohol, cigarette smoking, emotional strain, and personality."

Untreated, sufferers can look forward to a long siege with them. But today's peptic ulcer sufferers have a brighter prospect for relief than did those of even a single generation ago. There is now less than 1 chance in 18 that surgery will every be necessary and new medications act faster and better and offer more relief than ever before. The warning sign of active ulcers you will most likely experience (if you get any warning at all) is a gnawing discomfort in the middle or upper abdomen that typically comes between meals or in the middle of the night. Food or liquids, including antacids and milk, can provide some temporary relief, but milk might not be all that good a remedy since it stimulates production of hydrochloric acid and other digestive juices which further aggravates the pain. Antacids blended from aluminum, calcium or magnesium salts, have long been the non prescription drugs most people quickly reach for to get relief from their stomach pains. But, because antacids interfere with absorption of some medications, be sure to go over this with your doctor and get his approval.
