    • Symptoms: The most common symptom is severe, burning, aching pain in the feet and legs, which may prevent walking. ( BALA
    • Variations: GMHC
    • Sensory Neuropathy. The most common type of neuropathy associated with AIDS is called distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN). This syndrome is a result of the degeneration of the nerves responsible for conducting impulses, and is characterized by numbness and a sensation of pins and needles. DSPN causes few serious abnormalities and mostly results in numbness or tingling of the feet and slowed reflexes at the ankles. It generally occurs with more severe immunosuppression and is steadily progressive. Treatment with tricyclic antidepressants, such as Elavil, relieves symptoms but does not affect the underlying nerve damage.

Peripheral neuropathy is a common neurological disorder resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves. It may be caused by diseases of the nerves or as the result of systemic illnesses. Many neuropathies have well-defined causes such as diabetes, uremia, AIDs, or nutritional deficiencies. In fact, diabetes is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy. Other causes include mechanical pressure such as compression or entrapment, direct trauma, penetrating injuries, contusions, fracture or dislocated bones; pressure involving the superficial nerves (ulnar, radial, or peroneal) which can result from prolonged use of crutches or staying in one position for too long, or from a tumor; intraneural hemorrhage; exposure to cold or radiation or, rarely, certain medicines or toxic substances; and vascular or collagen disorders such as atherosclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and polyarteritis nodosa.

You may have come up with something which explains your problems and it is
VERY important that you share this information with bothof your physicians.
Amyloidosis is a disease in which abnormal protein polymers or aggregates are laid dowm in multiple organs, it usually occurrs in response to chronic infection or inflammation and given your history of chronic hepatitis you would be a likely candidate. Amyloid is laid dowm as I mentioned in multiple organs, including skin, spleen, kidneys and peripheral nerves. In solid organs it can cause enlargement,in peripheral nerves it can cause neuropathy. The diagnosis can be made by a biopsy of a peripheral nerve or any other involved tissue, I would bring this to the attention of your neurologist

The diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies can be frustrating, time consuming and costly. Careful clinical and electrodiagnostic assessment, with attention to the pattern of involvement and the types of nerve fibers most affected, narrows the differential diagnosis and helps to focus the laboratory evaluation. An algorithmic approach to the evaluation and differential diagnosis of a patient with peripheral neuropathy is presented, based on important elements of the clinical history and physical examination, the use of electromyography and nerve conduction studies, autonomic testing, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and nerve biopsy findings. The underlying cause of axonal neuropathies can frequently be treated; demyelinating neuropathies are generally managed with the assistance of a neurologist. T he incidence of peripheral neuropathy is not known, but it is a common feature of many systemic diseases. Diabetes and alcoholism are the most common etiologies of peripheral neuropathy in adults living in developed countries. The primary worldwide cause of treatable neuropathy is leprosy.

    Peripheral Neuropathy
a Simple FactSheet from the A IDS T reatment D ata N etwork Peripheral neuropathy is:
A condition caused by damage to the nerves in the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system includes nerves that run from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Many of these nerves are involved with sensation and feeling things such as pain, temperature and touch. Up to one-third of people with HIV may get some symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is usually felt at first as tingling and numbness in the hands and feet. Symptoms can be described as burning, shooting pain, throbbing, aching, and "feels like frostbite" or "walking on a bed of coals." Peripheral neuropathy can sometimes be caused by HIV but is most commonly a side effect of drugs. Sometimes neuropathy can be caused by vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy is done by a physical exam. Tests of vitamin B12 levels, thyroid function and glucose levels are also used to check for vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. If peripheral neuropathy is caused by a drug, the symptoms usually get better once the drug is stopped, although it can take 6-8 weeks and the pain can actually get worse for a while. Some other conditions can have the same symptoms and be confused with peripheral neuropathy. A symptom of CMV myelitis is a general weakening of the legs and is treated with anti-CMV drugs. Vacular myelopathy can cause numbness in the limbs and weakening of the spinal cord. New treatments are being studied for myelopathy. Herpes infections that cause symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are treated with

WHO WE ARE Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that saturates the body with 100% oxygen under pressure. In this way, the cells of the body become saturated with oxygen at 10-15 times greater than they would under ambient pressure. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes the growth of new capillaries, reduces swelling, and enhances the bodies ability to fight off infection. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is beneficial in treating non healing wounds, severe burns, and many neurologic and orthopedic conditions. Patients with paralysis from strokes, closed head trauma, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis have had remarkable improvement in strength and function with hyperbarics. There has been an acceleration in the healing of crush injuries, sports injuries as well as skin grafts. SPECIALTIES We specialize in dealing with patients with paralysis associated with prior strokes, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. We have a special interest in treating patients with diabetic foot ulcers, poor healing wounds, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and recent skin grafts or plastic surgery
