the Narcissistic Defense
Grief saps my strength, the sands of life are run,
and in my early youth am I cut off; but death is not my bane - it ends my woe. I would not death for this that is my love, as two united in a single soul would die as one. Narcissus and Echo from Metamorphoses, Ovid Satisfaction... What gets in the way of satisfaction - in love, in work, in life? Finding the answer to this question is what psychoanalysis is all about. Teaching the science and art of psychoanalysis is the goal of the Mid-Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. MMI welcomes psychotherapists, social workers and mental health practitioners seeking to deepen their skills and theoretical understanding; people who want to expand their effectiveness in business, teaching, the arts, or parenting; and anyone who wants to achieve better understanding of themselves and others. Whatever your background, we invite you to look through these pages and learn about Modern Psychoanalysis and the Mid-Manhattan Institute. Modern Psychoanalysis grew from the work of Hyman Spotnitz , a neurologist and psychiatrist who began his clinical work in the 1950's. Dr. Spotnitz believed that many of the neuroses and more severe mental illnesses seen today stem from the preoedipal period: the first two or three years of life, before the transformational development of language.

News Role of Head Injury in Schizophrenia Mild childhood head injury may accelerate expression of schizophrenia in individuals from families with a strong genetic predisposition. This finding was reported in this month's issue of Archives of General Psychiatry. Schizophrenia is caused by a combination of genetic and non-genetic factors. It occurs from late adolescence to middle adulthood. Continue reading Have you suffered from abuse or some other trauma? Most DID cases are the result of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse in childhood. Psychiatrist Steinberg puts her considerable research and clinical experience to the purpose of making it clear that DID is a "hidden epidemic," that many of its sufferers are misdiagnosed and fail to receive proper early treatment, and that the sensationalism of many MPD cases of yore has warped physicians' as well as public attitudes.

Personality is the characteristic way in which an individual thinks, feels, and behaves; it accounts for the ingrained behaviour patterns of the individual and allows the prediction of how he will act in particular circumstances. Personality embraces a person's moods, attitudes, and opinions, and is most clearly expressed in his interactions with other people. A personality disorder is a deeply ingrained, long-enduring, maladaptive, and inflexible pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that either significantly impairs an individual's social or occupational functioning or causes him subjective distress. Personality disorders are not illnesses but rather are pronounced accentuations or variations of personality in one or more of its traits. Encyclopedia Britannica

Max and Oscar are missing. =( - See thier missing posters by clicking on their names. **NOTE** It's been a while since I have worked on my site - I am sorry about that. I am planning on removing broken links and working on things over the next month so hopefully things here will be brighter by the end of the summer. I have taken a chance and have created a page here all about me. This site came in to creation in several ways. I am a survivor of child abuse, both physical and sexual abuse as well as the emotional abuse that came hand in hand with what they did to me. I also am healing and surviving from a sexual assault. After the assault, I spent many hours searching the web for information on how to survive this horrible thing that had happened. I found lots of information on prevention and lots of technical things but not a whole lot on surviving. This was back in late 1995. So, when I found geocities and saw that they offered a free web page service, I was excited. It gave me the possiblity to create the type of site that I had been searching for. So, Mollykat's Resources for Survivors was created.

Question:
Do narcissists also suffer from eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa? Answer: Patients suffering from eating disorders binge on food and sometimes are both anorectic and bulimic. This is an impulsive behaviour as defined by the DSM (particularly in the case of BPD and to a lesser extent of Cluster B disorders in general). Some patients develop these disorders as a way to self-mutilate. It is a convergence of two pathological behaviours: self-mutilation and an impulsive (rather, compulsive or ritualistic) behaviour. The key to improving the mental state of patients with dual diagnosis (a personality disorder plus an eating disorder) lies in concentrating upon their eating and sleeping disorders.

NPA Personality Theory Based on Mendelian Genetics Reference to Narcissistic, Obsessive-compulsive Personality and Schizophrenia
A. M. Benis, Sc.D., M.D. Summary
NPA Personality Theory
The NPA theory of personality was developed by the author on the basis of concepts described in a psychoanalytic framework over fifty years ago by Karen Horney. The theory posits three major behavioral traits underlying personality: Narcissism (N), Perfectionism (P) and Aggression (A), leading to the formulation of discrete character types. Each trait is based on a major pleiotropic gene that follows the rules of Mendelian genetics. The mode of transmission of the traits was deduced from archetypal family pedigrees. The traits N and A were found to be high frequency recessive, with P being dominant.
The theory has the power to explain aspects of personality that previously had seemed intractable to an analytical approach. In particular, it provides anyone the ability to analyze problems of interpersonal relations on the basis of readily identifiable personality types. Quite unexpectedly, it predicts a relationship between infertility (miscarriage and stillbirth) and the personality types of the parents. It also gives insight into the genetic predisposition to schizophrenia and infantile autism.
We should be happy to answer inquiries from:
* researchers or therapists in the fields of behavioral genetics or mental health
* anyone desiring to determine his or her genetically-determined personality type
