Pharyngitis / Tonsillitis What is pharyngitis and tonsillitis?
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections in the throat that cause inflammation. If the tonsils are primarily affected, it is called tonsillitis. If the throat is primarily affected, it is called pharyngitis. A person might even have inflammation and infection of both the tonsils and the throat. This would be called pharyngotonsillitis. These infections are spread by close contact with other individuals. Bacterial infections are more common during the winter. Viral infections are more common in summer and fall.

Ency. home Disease P Pharyngitis Overview Symptoms Treatment Definition: An inflammation of the pharynx which frequently results in a sore throat and may be caused by a variety of microorganisms. Causes and Risks Pharyngitis is caused by a variety of microorganisms. Most cases are viral and include the virus causing the common cold, flu (influenza virus), adenovirus, mononucleosis, HIV among various others. Bacterial causes include Group A streptococcus which causes strep throat (15% of cases), in addition to Corynebacterium, Arcanobacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia pneumoniae and others. In up to 30% of cases, no organism is identified. Most cases of pharyngitis occur during the colder months during respiratory disease season. Spread among household members is common. The medical importance of recognizing strep throat as a cause of pharyngitis stems from the need to prevent its complications which can include acute rheumatic fever, kidney dysfunction and severe disease such as bacteremia and rarely streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Ency. home Disease P Pharyngitis - gonococcal Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Alternative names: Gonococcal pharyngitis Definition: An inflammation of the throat involving the tonsils and the larynx (pharynx) caused by gonorrhea infection; usually producing a sore throat Causes and Risks Gonococcal pharyngitis is a sexually-transmitted disease. It is acquired through oral sex with an infected partner. The majority of throat infections caused by gonococci have no symptoms ( asymptomatic ). When discomfort is present it is generally mild. Symptoms involving the rest of the body normally are not present unless the person develops disseminated gonococcemia (wide-spread infection throughout the bloodstream).
Untreated gonorrhea may spread to other parts of the body, causing inflammation of the testes or prostate in men, or pelvic inflammatory disease in women.
Gonococci in the throat are present in 10 to 20% of women who have gonorrhea. In homosexual men with gonorrhea, pharyngeal infection is present in 10 to 25%.
Risk factors include recent exposure to gonorrhea, sexual activity with multiple partners, male homosexuality, and the practice of oral sex. The

Pharyngitis
Signs, symptoms and indicators
Contributing risk factors Recommendations Pharyngitis may be caused caused by a viral infection (90% of cases) or by a bacterium (10%). If caused by the group A streptococcus, it is called "strep throat". The chronic form can be caused by a continuing infection of the sinuses, lungs or mouth, or by constant irritation from smoking, breathing heavily polluted air, food allergies or consuming too much alcohol, or by swallowing substances that scald, corrode or scratch the throat. Pharyngitis is a common illness. Even strep throat is usually a self-limiting disease. Controlled trials show that clinical recovery is similar in cases with and without the use of antibiotics. The "streptophobia" associated with the risk of rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is probably unwarranted today, although proper care is still important. Epidemiological surveys demonstrate a correlation between vitamin C deficiency and the development of post-streptococcal consequences. Rheumatic fever is virtually nonexistent in the tropics where vitamin C intake is higher; 18% of children in high risk groups have subnormal

Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the pharynx, referred to also as sore throat. Pharyngitis can be acute or chronic inflammation. Commonly among adults who live or work in dusty or very dry environments, use their voices excessively, use tobacco or alcohol habitually, or suffer from chronic sinusitis, persistent coughs, or allergies.
Acute pharyngitis may precede the common cold or other communicable diseases. Chronic pharyngitis is commonly an extension of nasopharyngeal obstruction or inflammation. Uncomplicated pharyngitis usually subsides in 3 to 10 days. Cause; In children, it is often caused by streptococcal bacteria. In 90% of cases, pharyngitis occurs as the result of a virus. Symptoms: Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing (swallowing saliva is usually more painful than swallowing food)
Sensation of a lump in the throat
Have the urge to swallow constantly
Redden, inflamed posterior pharyngeal wall
Mild fever
Headache
Muscle and joint pain - especially in bacterial pharyngitis Treatment: Treatment is usually symptomatic - consisting mainly of rest, warm saline gargles, throat lozenges containing a mild anesthetic, plenty of fluids, and analgesics as prescribed by your doctor.

HOMOEOPATHY FOR SORE THROAT - PHARYNGITIS The throat is in constant use, carrying food to the digestive tract and air to the lungs, making it possible for us to speak. Nowadays, there is a rise in the number of cases of sore throats, and it has almost become a household problem, making the patients affected by it miserable sufferers. In this article, we will see how Homoeopathy may help these sufferers to conquer their problem in a safe and permanent manner.
p haryngitis is an inflammation of the pharynx. The pharynx is commonly referred to as the throat. it lies at the back of the mouth and extends a little way down inside the neck. It is shaped very roughly like an inverted cone, connecting the back of the nose with the back of the mouth into the larynx or the voice-box and the oesophagus. It acts as the vital link between the nose, mouth and voice-box and hence plays a central role in the essential jobs of breathing, eating and speaking. Incidence
Cause
The majority of sore throats are caused by an infection, either a viral or a bacterial infection. These are usually "caught" from the air.
