Both viral and bacterial forms of pharyngitis can make your throat sore and make swallowing difficult. If you have a severe case, you may find it hard to breathe. Most cases of acute pharyngitis last a few days with treatment. If you smoke, face regular exposure to environmental irritants, or have a continuing infection in your sinuses, lungs, or mouth, you may develop chronic pharyngitis, in which your symptoms will come back from time to time. The viral form of pharyngitis usually accompanies a cold, flu, or mononucleosis. Strep throat is the best-known example of a bacterial form of pharyngitis. Signs and Symptoms The symptoms of pharyngitis include the following:
  • Sore throat Pain when swallowing In rare cases, difficulty breathing

The following principles of appropriate antibiotic use for adults with acute pharyngitis apply to immunocompetent adults without complicated comorbid conditions, such as chronic lung or heart disease, and history of rheumatic fever. They do not apply during known outbreaks of group A streptococcus. 1. Group A -hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) is the causal agent in approximately 10% of adult cases of pharyngitis. The large majority of adults with acute pharyngitis have a self-limited illness, for which supportive care only is needed. 2. Antibiotic treatment of adult pharyngitis benefits only those patients with GABHS infection. All patients with pharyngitis should be offered appropriate doses of analgesics and antipyretics, as well as other supportive care. 3. Limit antibiotic prescriptions to patients who are most likely to have GABHS infection. Clinically screen all adult patients with pharyngitis for the presence of the four Centor criteria: history of fever, tonsillar exudates, no cough, and tender anterior cervical lymphadenopathy (lymphadenitis). Do not test or treat patients with none or only one of these criteria, since these patients are unlikely to have GABHS infection. For patients with two or more criteria the following strategies are appropriate: a) Test patients with two, three, or four criteria by using a rapid antigen test, and limit antibiotic therapy to patients with positive test results; b) test patients with two or three criteria by using a rapid antigen test, and limit antibiotic therapy to patients with positive test results or patients with four criteria; or c) do not use any diagnostic tests, and limit antibiotic therapy to patients with three or four criteria.

Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections in the throat that cause inflammation. If the tonsils are primarily affected, it is called tonsillitis. If the throat is primarily affected, it is called pharyngitis. A child might even have inflammation and infection of both the tonsils and the throat. This would be called pharyngotonsillitis. These infections are spread by close contact with other individuals. Bacterial infections are more common during the winter. Viral infections are more common in summer and fall. Facts about pharyngitis and tonsillitis:
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are most commonly seen in children between the ages of 6 and 8.
What causes pharyngitis and tonsillitis? There are many causes of infections in the throat. The following are the most common infectious agents:
  • viruses:

Disease Injury Nutrition Poison ... Z Definition: An inflammation of the pharynx which frequently results in a sore throat and may be caused by a variety of microorganisms.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Pharyngitis is caused by a variety of microorganisms. Most cases are viral and include the virus causing the common cold, flu (influenza virus), adenovirus, mononucleosis, HIV among various others. Bacterial causes include Group A streptococcus which causes strep throat (15% of cases), in addition to Corynebacterium Arcanobacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae Chlamydia pneumoniae and others. In up to 30% of cases, no organism is identified. Most cases of pharyngitis occur during the colder months during respiratory disease season. Spread among household members is common. The medical importance of recognizing strep throat as a cause of pharyngitis stems from the need to prevent its complications which can include acute rheumatic fever, kidney dysfunction and severe disease such as bacteremia and rarely streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.
Symptoms:
  • sore throat additional symptoms are dependent on the underlying microorganisms step throat may be accompanied by fever , headache, swollen lymph nodes in the neck viral pharyngitis may be associated with runny nose (rhinorrhea) and postnasal discharge severe cases of pharyngitis may be accompanied by difficulty swallowing and rarely difficulty breathing

Pharyngitis usually affects children and young adults. Common signs and symptoms include sore throat, fever, headache, and nausea and vomiting. This brief review focuses on pharyngitis caused by Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococci, infectious mononucleosis, and other viruses, such as adenovirus I. Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis (GABHS) A ). This illness is usually seen in school- aged children, mostly ages 5 to 15 years. Younger children can acquire this, but children 3 years or younger often have a viral etiology to their pharyngitis. Under age 3 years it occurs as Purulent Rhinitis as well or Nasopharyngitis B Along with infectious mononucleosis, GABHS has historically been associated with an exudative pharyngitis, although Oski’s textbook of pediatrics notes that many other agents (i.e. adenovirus) can cause an exudative pharyngitis. C ). Clinical clues to GABHS include:

Causes and Risks:
Pharyngitis is most often caused by a viral infection (95%) or by a bacterium (5%). If caused by the Group A streptococcus , it is called strep throat . The chronic form can be caused by a continuing infection of the sinuses, lungs, or mouth; or by constant irritation from smoking , breathing heavily polluted air, consuming too much alcohol, or by swallowing substances that scald, corrode or scratch the throat. Pharyngitis is a common illness.
Prevention:
Avoid irritation of the throat.
Symptoms:
Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:
Signs and Tests: Treatment: Treatment of viral pharyngitis is only to relieve symptoms. Antibiotics are not effective. To reduce pain and inflammation, gargle with warm salt water (one-half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) several times a day. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen - oral may be helpful.
