Home Patient Information Pharyngitis (Sore Throat) What is pharyngitis? Pharyngitis is a fancy name for a sore throat. It occurs when there is inflammation in the throat. Sometimes, a sore throat can be the first symptom of a cold, flu, or mononucloesis What causes it? Pharyngitis is usually caused by a virus. Examples of such viruses include rhinovirus, adenovirus, influenza, and epstein-barr virus. Pharyngitis can also be caused by bacteria. Approximately 10 percent of adults who seek medical care for pharyngitis have group A streptococcus ("strep throat"). Other common causes of sore throats: smoking cigarettes breathing polluted air or fumes drinking a lot of alcohol swallowing food or substances which injure the throat frequent post-nasal drip What are the symptoms of pharyngitis? Most people will have a red, sore throat. Some people will have fevers and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Others will have whitish material on their tonsils.

Background Previous scoring systems to predict the likelihood of GABHS based on patient presentation have had limited portability from one practice to another. This study sought to create one that can adjust for the differing likelihood of GABHS in different populations. Population studied Two hundred and six patients who presented to a semi-rural general practice in Ireland over a 3 year period with a main symptom of sore throat, were enrolled in the study. Patients younger than 4 years old and those who had taken antibiotics in the previous 2 weeks were excluded. Physicians in different settings would have to determine the prevalence of GABHS in their patient population before utilizing this scoring system. Study design and validity Outcomes measured The sensitivity and specificity of the Bayesian scoring system in predicting positive throat culture was compared to that of study clinicians.

Microbiology Education Series Beta Hemolytic Streptococci and Pharyngitis back Pharyngitis is caused mainly by either a variety of viruses or beta hemolytic Streptococcci . Humans are known to carry beta hemolytic Streptococci in their throats without disease and therefore may be carriers. The most common cause of bacterial pharyngitis is beta hemolytic group A Streptococcci pyogenes. Group C beta hemolytic Streptococcci also cause pharyngitis – mainly in college age individuals. Group G beta hemolytic Streptococcci also cause some bacterial pharyngitis but are less common that Group C. There are many “rapid Strep tests” on the market and none of them are as sensitive as culture. All negative rapid Strep tests should be backed up with a culture or the diagnosis could be missed. The rapid Strep test detects only Group A beta hemolytic Streptococcci and therefore would miss the Group C and G. If a rapid Strep test is performed a second swab is necessary for culture, as the bacteria are destroyed during the performance of the rapid test. TriCore provides a two swab collection device for this purpose. The Strep screen culture at TriCore will detect these beta hemolytic Streptococcci listed above.
