Funny Phobias Most of the people in the world have a fear of one kind or another. While most people suffer from pathophobia (fear of disease), monophobia (fear of being alone), glossophobia (fear of public speaking), algophobia (fear of pain), taphephobia (fear of being buried alive), and many more, there are also some less popular phobias. At the end of this essay, I have compiled a list of the phobias that I find amusing. There are many people in the world that suffer from polyphobia, which simply means to have more than one fear. Not so common, people may suffer from antinomial phobias. For example, there are some people that live with vestiophobia (fear of clothes) and gymnophobia (fear of nudity). Another example is people with achluophobia (fear of darkness) and photophobia (fear of light). Watch out guys, within the next seven years, you will probably get married and you will suffer from pentheraphobia, which is one of the scariest phobias in existence, the fear of your mother-in-law! Not all phobias have been in existence for thousands of years. I’m sure that brontophobia (fear of thunder and lightning), febriphobia (fear of fever), and ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) have existed since the Black Ages. Some of the phobias that have formed in the last two centuries would be electrophobia (fear of electricity), motorphobia (fear of automobiles), and aviophobia (fear of flying). In 1945, a brand new phobia was quickly created and escalated drastically in the 1950’s. It is called nucleomituphobia, which is the fear or nuclear weapons. But that’s not the newest phobia in existence as of today. This threat is called cyberphobia (fear of computers). In mild cases, people may be afraid to use a computer or an ATM. In today’s society, technology is deeply integrated. Computers are used in calculators, cars, microwaves, power tools, and many more. So to the cyberphobic, I say, “Get over it, or go to the extreme and move away from the city, abandon your car, hand build your home, hand pump your water, build your fires, and hunt for your own food!” If you have a phobia, there is still hope for you. Phobias can be cured. Remember when you were a child and suffered from clinophobia (fear of going to bed) because of bogyphobia (fear of the bogeyman), achluophobia (fear of darkness), and lachanophobia (fear of vegetables). Now chances are good that you go to bed without checking your closet or looking under your bed, that you don’t go ballistic if the lights go out, and that you eat a salad every so often. Phobias can deeply impact a person’s life. A person with chronophobia (fear of time) probably won’t make it to their 10:00AM dentist appointment on time. A person with chaetophobia (fear of hair) is most likely bald, has no eyelashes, no eyebrows, etc. A person with cibophobia (fear of food) usually hasn’t eaten in weeks and could easily be anorexic. This proves how serious and destructive phobias can be. If you do suffer from any strange phobias, I would suggest calling one-eight-hundred-phobias, for arithmophobics (people who fear numbers) or for logophobics (people who fear words), 1-800-635-1317. This phone number is for entertainment purposes only. Now on a more serious note, in all the years I’ve lived and all the knowledge I’ve acquired, I can only find one, yes one, valid fear. This fear is called zeusophobia, which is the fear of God. In Heaven, the false phobias are destroyed, but in Hell they can be amplified. I still find it hilarious, though, that these phobias exist, especially since someone must have experienced these fears so they could be valid phobias. So if you experience arachibutyrophobia, you’re probably one in a million, but you’re still out there. some fears may be listed more than once A Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing Aerophobia- Fear of swallowing air Ambulophobia- Fear of walking Anablephobia- Fear of looking up Anemophobia- Fear of wind Anthrophobia- Fear of flowers Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth. Arithmophobia- Fear of numbers Aulophobia- Fear of flutes Auroraphobia- Fear of Northern Lights B Barophobia- Fear of gravity Basophobia- Fear of walking Batophobia- Fear of being close to high buildings Bibliophobia- Fear of books Blennophobia- Fear of slime Bogyphobia- Fear of the bogeyman C Cathisophobia- Fear of sitting Catoptrophobia- Fear of mirrors Chaetophobia- Fear of hair Chionophobia- Fear of snow Chromatophobia- Fear of colors Chronophobia- Fear of time Chronomentrophobia- Fear of clocks Cibophobia- Fear of food Clinophobia- Fear of going to bed Cnidophobia- Fear of string D Deciophobia- Fear of making decisions Dendrophobia- Fear of trees Dextrophobia- Fear of objects at the right side of the body Didaskaleinophobia- Fear of school E Eisoptrophobia- Fear of mirrors Eleutherophobia- Fear of freedom Eosophobia- Fear of daylight Epistemophobia- Fear of knowledge Ergophobia- Fear of work Ereuthophobia- Fear of the color red G Geliophobia- Fear of laughter Geniophobia- Fear of chins Genuphobia- Fear of knees Geumaphobia- Fear of taste Gnosiophobia- Fear of knowledge Graphophobia- Fear of writing H Heliophobia- Fear of the sun Helmintophobia- Fear of being infested with worms Hemophobia- Fear of blood Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia- Fear of long words Homichlophobia- Fear of fog Hypnophobia- Fear of sleep I Ichthyophobia- Fear of fish Ideophobia- Fear of ideas K Kainophobia- Fear of anything new Kathisophobia- Fear of sitting down L Lachanophobia- Fear of vegetables Leukophobia- Fear of the color white Levophobia- Fear of objects to the left side of the body Linonophobia- Fear of string Logophobia- Fear of words M Melanophobia- Fear of the color black Melophobia- Fear of music Metrophobia- Fear of poetry Mnemophobia- Fear of memories Mottephobia- Fear of moths N Nebulaphobia- Fear of fog Neophobia- Fear of anything new Nephophobia- Fear of clouds Nomatophobia- Fear of names O Octophobia- Fear of the number 8 Ommetaphobia- Fear of eyes Oneirophobia- Fear of dreams Ophthalmophobia- Fear of opening one’s eyes Ostraconophobia- Fear of shellfish P Panophobia- Fear of everything Papyrophobia- Fear of paper Paraskavedekatriaphobia- Fear of Friday the 13th Peladophobia- Fear of bald people Phengophobia- Fear of daylight Phobophobia- Fear of fear Photophobia- Fear of light Phronemophobia- Fear of thinking Pogonophobia- Fear of beards S Sciophobia- Fear of shadows Scolionophobia- Fear of school Selenophobia- Fear of the moon Siderophobia- Fear of stars Sitophobia- Fear of food Sophophobia- Fear of learning Stasibasiphobia- Fear of walking T Thaasophobia- Fear of sitting Trichopathophobia- Fear of hair Triskadekaphobia- Fear of the number 13 V Verbophobia- Fear of words X Xanthophobia- Fear of the color yellow

In the West, phobias are the one of the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders. The phobic person is not alone. As much as thirteen percent of the population may currently have phobias, and as many as sixty percent of people have been affected by a phobia at some point in their life. When the fears of the phobic person get to the point of causing great anxiety, and start to disrupt normal life, it is time to get some help. If these fears cause misery, or a desire to flee from the fear, (the Greek word phobos means extreme fear and flight), the phobic person may need some help to get over these fears. The Greeks, Phobos was a god who could help them win in battle. Phobos could so confuse the enemy, and strike in them a feeling of abject terror. The enemy would be stunned into inaction, so that the victory of the Greeks would be assured. For some people, even just the thought of their phobia is enough to provoke the fear response of the actual feared situation. Sometimes the fear is so strong they can feel physical symptoms such as dizziness or nausea, many of the same feelings that come with

Anxiety is a normal human feeling. We all experience it when faced with situations we find threatening or difficult. People often call this feeling stress but the word 'stress' can be used to mean two different things - on the one hand, the things that make us anxious and on the other, our reaction to them. This makes it a confusing word and so it will not be used in this leaflet. When our anxiety is a result of a continuing problem, such as money difficulties, we call it worry , if it is a sudden response to an immediate threat, like looking over a cliff or being confronted with an angry dog, we call it fear Normally, both fear and anxiety can he helpful, helping us to avoid dangerous situations, making us alert and giving us the motivation to deal with problems. However, if the feelings become too strong or go for too long, they can stop us from doing the things we want to and can make our lives miserable. A phobia is a fear of particular situations or things that are not dangerous and which most people do not find troublesome.

The Anxiety Network International What are "The Phobias"? The complete CCBT Audiotape Series on Overcoming Social Anxiety is Finished In the anxiety literature, you read about them all the time...." the phobias "... The big problem with using this terminology is that everyone interprets "the phobias" in a different way, and many professionals interpret it only as relating to panic and its associated phobias. It is not accepted scientific practice to be imprecise. It is very important to define terms as precisely as possible. So, when someone uses the phrase "the phobias", ask them just what they mean. Are they talking about agoraphobia Or perhaps specific phobias , such as fear of snakes, claustrophobia, or emetophobia? Or maybe they're also including social phobia (social anxiety disorder).....a completely separate anxiety problem that is the THIRD largest mental health care problem in the world. That is precisely the problem....when someone says they treat "the phobias"

Phobias E veryone feels anxious or uneasy from time to time. Your first day on a new job, planning for a long trip, going to the dentist....your palms sweat, you feel shaky, your heart pounds. Some anxiety helps to keep you focused on the job at hand. However, when your anxiety is so serious that it interferes with your work, leads you to avoid certain situations or keeps you from enjoying life, you may be suffering from a form of the most common type of mental disorder, an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are not just a case of "nerves." You can’t overcome an anxiety disorder just through willpower, nor can the symptoms be ignored or wished away. These disorders cause you to feel anxious most of the time, making some everyday situations so uncomfortable that you may avoid them entirely. Or, you may experience occasional instances of anxiety that are so terrifying and intense that you may be immobilized with fear. Although these conditions can be very frightening and disabling, they are also very treatable. It is important to recognize the symptoms and seek help. Specifically, Phobias afflict as many as 12 percent of all Americans. They are the most common psychiatric illness in women and the second most common in men over age 25. Phobias are not all the same. There are three main groups which include:

by Lynne L. Hall From 50 yards away, you see the animal approaching. Silently it watches you as it slinks ever so much closer with each padded step. Stay calm, you tell yourself. There's nothing to fear. But suddenly, panic seizes you in a death grip, squeezing the breath out of you and turning your knees to Jell-O. Your heart starts slam-dancing inside your chest, your mouth turns to cotton, and your palms are so sweaty you'd swear they'd sprung a leak. You'd escape this terrifying confrontation, if only you could make your legs work! Just what is this wild and dangerous animal making you hyperventilate and turning your legs to rubber? A man-eating tiger, hungry for a meal? A lioness bent on protecting her cubs? Guess again. That's Tabby, your neighbor's ordinary house cat, sauntering your way. Ridiculous, right? How can anyone experience so much fear at the sight of such an innocuous animal? If you're one of the thousands who suffer from galeophobiathe fear of catsor any one of hundreds of other phobias, sheer panic at the appearance of everyday objects, situations or feelings is a regular occurrence. Irrational Fears A phobia is an intense, unrealistic fear of an object, an event, or a feeling. An estimated 18 percent of the U.S. adult population suffers from some kind of phobia, and a person can develop a phobia of anythingelevators, clocks, mushrooms, closed spaces, open spaces. Exposure to these trigger the rapid breathing, pounding heartbeat, and sweaty palms of panic.

Insight into anxiety-related problems and a self-help approach to begin to deal with them
The day our experiences result in extreme anxiety or panic attack about which we become acutely aware,
from that day on our lives have changed. From that day on our subconscious takes over in a way that we
previously didn't need it. We now become driven to find reasons and answers, driven to constantly watch
ourselves and driven to look out for failure and negative outcomes, to concentrate on that one bad quality
or weakness among the many good and strong ones. We are driven to behave in ways that make us angry
or scared, despairing and frustrated, ways that make us more anxious, ways we believe help to protect us.
Understanding anxiety and panic disorders, phobias, OCD and depression
Generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder, phobias (social phobia, agoraphobia and many specific ones), OCD (obsessive compulsive behavior) and many forms of depression can overwhelm us and leave us feeling out of control.
They feel as though we are driven to act like this, strengthen with every 'attack' and lead to constant searching for reasons and answers. Involving fear and self-doubt, they can appear too powerful to deal with.

A phobia is basically a fear. We all have fears about things such as heights and spiders but, for most of us, they do not interfere with the way we lead our lives. These fears are only called phobias when they interfere with things we would otherwise enjoy or do easily. Many of us get worried before meeting new people, but we find that once we are with them, we can cope and even enjoy the situation. However, some of us become very anxious about these situations. At best, we cannot enjoy them and, at worst, we may have to avoid them altogether. This is what doctors and psychologists call social phobia. This leaflet describes what it feels like to have a social phobia, how you can help yourself, and what other kinds of help are available. There are two main sorts of social phobia. If you suffer with a general social phobia, you will tend to worry about becoming the centre of attention anywhere you find yourself with other people. You will find yourself worrying that everybody is looking at you and noticing what you are doing. You may fear being introduced to other people and may even worry about eating or drinking in public. It may be difficult for you to go into shops or restaurants. You may feel so embarrassed about undressing in public that you can't face going to the beach. It may also be difficult for you to confront your boss or colleagues, even when you really ought to.

What is Hypnosis and Trance? Hypnosis is a method of communication that induces a trance or a trance-like state. Trance is a naturally occurring state in which one's attention is narrowly focused and heightened. Most of us are in and out of trances all day long. Anyone who is absorbed in a book or a TV program is in a trance. Attention may be focused either internally (e.g. on thoughts, self-talk, feelings and/or images) or externally (e.g. on a task, book, or movie). The narrowed focus of attention allows other stimuli in the environment to be ignored or blocked out of conscious awareness. Examples of trance states are daydreaming, driving a car, watching TV, and some forms of meditation. Remember: You control the process... the therapist is merely your guide.

    How Phobias Work
How Phobias Work The Cure Other Treatments Products Maybe you know about Pavlov's dogs. Ivan Pavlov fed his dogs and rang a bell whenever dinner was served. After a while, just ringing the bell would get the dogs to salivate - their bodies would act as if they were about to get fed. A bell (stimulus) actually caused automatic biological and emotional responses! Let that sink in for a moment... Even though it isn't logical to salivate at the sound of a bell the dogs would do it. Phobias work the same way for us. Some biological response (fear for instance) has been tied to some "trigger" or stimulus (usually as a result of some emotionally charged incident.) This stimulus can be just thinking about the situation. In other words, the way a person thinks about getting on an airplane can have profound affects on his biology. These thoughts can cause the triggering of a variety of feelings - including fear and panic. Although it's often not this simple, here's one way it can happen. Let's say somebody snuck up behind you and said "boo" and you just happened to be looking at the letter "L". Even though you're not consciously aware of what's going on, whenever you see this letter your unconscious mind could refer back to that earlier situation and get that scared feeling back. It has made the association between "L" and that feeling.
