Although most types of conjunctivitis are contagious, it usually causes no danger to the eye or to your child's vision. Besides infections, conjunctivitis can also be caused by inflammation or irritants to the eye. The first symptom of conjunctivitis is discomfort in the eye, followed by redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue covering the eye and inner surface of the eyelids. There is some pain associated with conjunctivitis, but your child will probably complain mostly of discomfort that is not relieved by rubbing or the sensation of something that feels like sand in the eye. After a day or so of these symptoms, a white, yellow, or green discharge from the eyes may be present. In bacterial conjunctivitis, the discharge will be somewhat thick. In viral conjunctivitis, the discharge may be thinner, and may even be clear.

CALIFORNIA CATTLEMAN, MAY 2002 PINKEYE THERAPY Last month we discussed fly control methods. One of the important aspects of fly control is decreasing face fly infestations as a method of helping to prevent pinkeye in cattle. Another aid in the prevention of pinkeye is to clip the pastures if grass is too long and headed out. The irritation of dust, plant pollen, or weed seeds will promote the heavy shedding of the pinkeye bacteria ( Moraxella bovis These carriers spread the organism by contact and face flies to the rest of the herd and the susceptible animals will become infected and have clinical pinkeye. If pinkeye cases do occur, what are the treatment options? One of the professors in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis has completed several years of research on this subject. Dr. Lisle George has examined several methods to treat pinkeye and these and other methods are summarized below. You can obtain these from your veterinarian or other animal health product source. After you have touched the eye (extracted the foxtail or treated the eye) or nose area, throw the gloves away.

Ear tags: Alternate your use of pyrethroids and organophosphates on a yearly basis. For more effective fly control use 2 ear tags versus 1. Put ear tags in calves. These carriers spread the organism by contact and face flies to the rest of the herd and the susceptible animals will become infected and have clinical pinkeye. If pinkeye vaccines are part of your prevention plan, vaccinate well ahead of pinkeye season. Try to give the last dose of vaccine 30 days before the fly season. If the vaccine is a two-dose product, give two doses. Be sure to vaccinate the calves, as they are often the ones most at risk. If pinkeye cases do occur, what is the best treatment? Question Posted By: Dee on Thursday, December 17, 1998
I teach prekindergarten aged children. Pinkeye is a common complaint among this aged child. In 20 years of teaching, I managed to not contract this illness, until last year. Last year I contracted pinkeye three times in a six month period. This school year I have already contracted it once. I am being treated for undifferentiated connective tissue disease and probable Sjogren's Syndrome. I have very dry eyes, and use artificial tears frequently, in one use disposable containers to prevent contamination. I am on daily low dose prednisone and plaquenil. Could any of these illnesses or medications be responsible for me no longer being able to resist this very aggravating illness? Is there anything I can do to prevent it (I am careful about handwashing). At least one of the infections came after one of the children in the classroom had it...for some of the infections I saw no signs of any of the children being infected. I sure would like help with this. Thank you!
Dee The term pinkeye generally refers to a infection of the conjunctiva or mucus membrane covering of the eye. By far, the majority of these infections are viral in nature. These infections may be associated with cold symptoms or they may only cause eye symptoms. The infection usually lasts 7 to 14 days and the treatment is usually symptomatic with cold compresses and artificial tears. Less common, pinkeye can be caused by a bacterial infection and this needs to be treated with antibiotic drops. Bacterial infections are usually associated with a significant amount of discharge from the eye. Good handwashing hygiene is the best way to prevent spread of the infection.

Older reviews in the reviews archives [Eckobass / Pinkeye d'Gekko 2.1.2003 ~ Cicero's] So last night had to be the single worst pairing of bands i've ever seen at Ciceros. Some of you may have seen Eckobass before. They are a pretty heavy all instrumental jamband. James Mullins may have played their 20 minutes jammed out Dark Star on Stumble a few times. They are really good and fun guys taboot. They opened and even suprised me by having Shawn Eckles from Speakeasy show up to sit in for the whole hour long set. Following them was Pinkeye d'Gekko. A band made up of talented musicians but fronted by a rock star wanna be who very obviously practices his rock star poses in the mirror for hours a day and keeps a hair stylist and makeup artist on hand at his shows (really). They are kind of a southern rock band crossed with the Partridge Family. They played Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright" and they always play this horrible song about playing Simon Says. So thanks to Eckobass for showing us a good time both on and off the stage. Definitely check these guys the next time they are around. I think they plan to be back in St. Louis next month.

portion of the eye. Caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergy, it is common in
children and highly contagious. A child with conjunctivitis may have: swollen eyelids
a nightly eye discharge that crusts and seals the eye shut
burning or a sensation of "something in my eye"
itching eyes If your child has pinkeye, call your doctor. Although the disease may clear up by
itself, antibiotic drops or ointments may speed healing and relieve uncomfortable
symptoms. Make sure your child does not share towels or washcloths and keeps his or her
fingers away from the eyes. If you need to clear crusted secretions from the
child's eyelids, use a washcloth moistened with warm water or a damp cotton
