February 02, 2000 Pinkeye: What You Need to Know By Michael Woo-Ming M.D., MPH
Personal MD.com Medical Contributor Probably the most common and misunderstood eye disorder is ?pinkeye?, also known as conjunctivitis. The concern of parents when they find out their child or someone in their child?s school has pinkeye is understandable, but it is safe to say that most pinkeye is harmless, and with some common sense, can be easily controlled and eradicated. What causes pinkeye? Pinkeye occurs because the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelids and partially covers the eyeball, becomes inflamed. It is the most common disorder of the eye in North America. Pinkeye can result from either allergic or infectious causes.

TREATMENT FOR PINKEYE:
A recent research at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine suggests that the antibiotic Nuflor is useful in the treatment of pinkeye in calves. The healing rates were 6.2 and 4.8 times greater in calves treated intramuscularly and subcutaneously, respectively. Treated calves also shed significantly fewer pinkeye bacteria than untreated controls. It was concluded that treatment with Nuflor by injections reduced corneal ulcer healing time, lessened the clinical severity and reduced the amounts of bacterial shedding from infected calves.

FACE FLIES AND PINKEYE
by Lee Townsend, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
Face flies are one of the most difficult pasture pests to control. They are on cattle only for short periods of time during the day and stay mostly on the head, which is difficult to treat with insecticides. Face flies use an abrasive sponging mouthpart to stimulate tear flow from the eyes. These flies lap up the protein rich secretions from the eye as well as nasal discharges, saliva, or blood oozing from wounds. Most of the time they are off of the animals, resting on plants, fence posts, or other objects. In addition to being very annoying to cattle, face flies play a role in the transmission of Moraxella bovis , the principal causal agent of bovine pinkeye or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. This disease is a highly contagious inflamation of the cornea and conjunctiva of cattle. Coupled with the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus, M. bovis

Infectious diseases can be broadly subdivided as specific diseases caused by specific microorganisms (e.g. brucellosis: Brucella melitensis) and non-specific diseases such as mastitis, pneumonia, etc. which can be caused by a variety of different kinds of microorganisms. Mastitis for example, may be caused by staphylococci, streptococci, enteric bacilli, yeast, corynebacteria, etc.
Infectious diseases can also be subdivided according to the type of microorganism responsible for the infection, e.g.:
      1. protozoal diseases (due to one-celled animals): coccidiosis, toxoplasmosis 2. fungal: ringworm

We got two little does this weekend. Cute as could be. this morning I noticed they both had a white milky discharge in their eyes. Is this pinkeye? I cleaned the eyes with a damp paper towel but don't know if I should be doing anything else. Could be (pinkeye) starting from stress. How old are the does? You will want to worm them, and if they are young you will also want to put them on coccidiosis prevention. Do both of these things now and don't wait. Using a sulfa drug for the coccidiosis prevention will also help with this little bit of shipping fever they are having, which is not only going to give them weepy eyes but also a little lung congestion and a runny nose. If it also has a fever going along with it, call one of us on the Goat 911 site and you will need some medications. Honestly I would order some Tylan 50 if they are young and Tylan 200 if they are older; some needles and syringes just to have on hand anyway. There is lots of worming and coccidiosis information on previous

    Pinkeye
Pinkeye, or conjunctivitis, is a very contagious infection of the eye. It is characterized by inflammation of the eyelids and eyeballs. It occurs in the membrane that lines the eyelids and the eyeball. Pinkeye can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Pollutants like allergens, chemicals, dust, and smoke may cause or worsen the problem. Swimming may be linked to it because of exposure to chlorine in public pools or to contaminated water. Symptoms may last several days or up to two weeks. they include:
    • redness in the white of the eye a sandy feeling in the eye burning itching blurred vision and sensitivity to light and discharge in the eye that forms a crust during the night, sealing the eye shut
If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed. The child must not touch the eye and must wash his or her hands often. Conjunctivitis can be easily passed from eye to eye or from person to person. It can spread through a whole classroom of children in just a few days. Children should not return to school until they have had 24 hours of treatment. Warm compresses may relieve some discomfort.

Pinkeye (conjunctivitis) is an irritation of the membrane on the inside of the eyelids covering the whites of the eyes. It can be caused by bacteria, a virus, allergies or chemicals. Symptoms of all types of pinkeye include a bloodshot appearance and itchiness or irritation. In addition, Bacteria cause a thick sticky, yellowish or greenish discharge. This may lead to crusts on the eyelids and cause the eyelids to stick together. Use a thick cotton ball soaked in warm water to gently wipe the eyelids. Antibacterial ointments or eye drops are used to cure the pinkeye.
Viral causes have a clear watery discharge. Antibiotics cannot sure viral pinkeye. It usually clears up without treatment within a few days.
Allergies cause the inside of eyelids to swell and become red, and the eyes are watery and itch severely. Decongestants and eye drops containing antihistamines effectively cure this type of pinkeye. Use cold compresses to relieve the irritation.
Chemical causes can cause severe eye irritation and pain. Immediately flush the eye with cool water for about 15 minutes. Cover the injured eye with a clean pad and see a doctor.

    PINKEYE IN GOATS
Pinkeye in goats may be caused by several different agents though the symptoms are similar. Pinkeye can be the result of infectious or non-infectious organisms. Since infectious Pinkeye is also contagious and is most commonly the type that goat producers encounter, this article will focus on it. Non-infectious Pinkeye can occur in individual animals as a result of over-exposure to very bright sunlight, dusty hay, or blowing dust (either in pastures or trailers while being transported). Treatment is similar to that used in medicating infectious Pinkeye and will be discussed briefly later in this article. Infectious Pinkeye can be caused by viruses or bacteria and is medically termed infectious keratoconjunctivitis. Pinkeye can be brought on by stress . . . stress from moving the goat, stress caused by severe weather or dramatic weather changes, or stress arising from an underlying illness (abortion, pneumonia) . Stress reduces the immune system's ability to overcome the causative agents of Pinkeye. Flies do a great job of transmitting Pinkeye from goat to goat; keeping the fly population down is important. Shows and sales are ideal places for goats to pick up infectious Pinkeye. The viral mechanism that causes the abortion disease Chlamydia often brings with it a virulent form of Pinkeye. In fact, sometimes the first recognizable sign of an impending abortion is Pinkeye. Certain types of Pinkeye, particularly Chlamydia-induced infections, tend to be chronic (recurring) because the goat becomes a carrier. . . . able to infect others and have repeated bouts of the disease itself.

Classic pinkeye is thought of as a summer and autumn disease. The organism that causes pinkeye, Moraxella bovis , is usually transmitted by face flies active in the warm months. However, a variation of Moraxella bovis can cause an outbreak of pinkeye in the winter when there is little fly activity. The nonhemolytic version of Moraxella bovis and a virus called ocular IBR are the chief causes of "winter pinkeye." Let's review classic pinkeye, which is prevalent in warm months. Moraxella bovis will generally cause a white opacity in the eye's center with excessive tear production and reddening of the conjunctiva. In a classic outbreak, the yearling cattle in their first grazing season are most severely affected. English breeds, particularly Hereford cattle, seem to be the most susceptible. Many observers have said that Zebu-type cattle (Brahman or cattle with humps over their shoulders) rarely suffer from pinkeye. Moraxella bovis will hibernate in the nostrils of carrier animals over the winter, waiting for the flies' reemergence in the spring.
