Live in Technicolor
Screening PINKeye and the Mambo Urbano Orchestra
BY CINDY MCGLYNN "OK. Like, I really liked the part when you guys were playing and the monitors were showing this totally molten, oozing lava that was flowing really, really fast. And then it was like these hands dipped into it, scooped it up and started drinking it! And, I mean, you knew it wasn't lava because the hands were, like, all red, too. You knew that it was some computer trick but it was still totally like the dude was drinking lava. The freakin' magic of film, eh, Dan o! You guys rock." So went my part of the conversation with PINKeye's drummer/visual programmer Dan o. "Yeah," he responds. Friendly if slightly more level-headed then again, he knew the lava bit was coming. "There are quite a lot of things you can do, especially because a lot of our visuals originate on film and you can turn blue water red with the computer and stuff like that." I may be forgiven if I spent most of our conversation taking about visuals it's what happens when you put four or five video monitors and a giant screen covered in funky computer animation, treated film clips and lava-drinkers in front of a TV-deprived girl, as PINKeye did at the release party for their first CD

Health File - #82, July 2001
Pinkeye (Conjunctivitis)
What is Pinkeye?
Pinkeye is sometimes called conjunctivitis (con junk tiv eye tiss). It is an infection of the surface of the eyeball and the inside of the eyelid. There are several causes of pinkeye. Usually it is an infection from a virus or bacteria. But pinkeye can also be caused by an allergy, by air pollution, or by rubbing the eyes too much. Pinkeye is a common childhood disease. It spreads to other people very easily.
What does it look like?
Pinkeye usually makes the whites of the eyes turn pink or red. It often causes discomfort in the eyes, including a feeling of "grittiness," burning, and/or itching. There may also be a lot of tears and pus in the eyes. If there is pus, this will often make the eyelids stick together when the person wakes up after a sleep. A cloth dipped in warm water and applied gently to the affected area will help remove any crusty discharge.
Is pinkeye dangerous?

Pinkeye afflicts Dartmouth campus
As many as 1,000 students may have it
Friday, March 15, 2002 By STEPHEN FROTHINGHAM
Hanover
An unusually fast-spreading bacteria that caused conjunctivitis among as many as 1,000 Dartmouth College students could spread to other campuses after spring break, college officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. "Schools need to be on the lookout when kids return from spring break," Dr. Jack Turco at Dartmouth's student health center said yesterday. The nuisance illness, also called pinkeye, may have spread around the Ivy League even before the break. Health officials at Princeton University in New Jersey were waiting for lab tests that would indicate whether an outbreak there is related to Dartmouth's. About 140 Princeton students have contracted the illness since January. That's twice the usual number, a Princeton official said. Dartmouth students began reporting the illness in January. Since then nearly 500 have reported pinkeye symptoms to the health center. A survey of the college's 5,000 students showed that 500 others may have had pinkeye but not reported it.

FACTS ABOUT
Pinkeye (Conjunctivitis)
Pinkeye is an infection of the covering of the eyeball. It is usually caused by a virus, but it can also be due to bacteria. Pinkeye can also be caused by allergy or by rubbing the eyes excessively. Children with pinkeye complain of a scratchy feeling or pain in their eyes and may have a lot of tears and pus discharge. The infection turns the whites of the eyes pink or red. When the child wakes up after a sleep, pus or discharge often makes the eyelids stick together. Pinkeye is easily spread when:
  • a child with the infection touches the discharge and then touches another child;
    an uninfected child touches an infected child's eye discharge and then touches his or her own eyes;
    an adult wipes an infected child's eyes and then touches his or her or another person's eyes.
Pinkeye that is caused by bacteria can be treated and cured with an antibiotic. Antibiotics can also stop the infection from spreading to others. There is no treatment for pinkeye that is caused by a virus. Things Parents Can Do
  • Watch your child for signs of pinkeye if another child has it.

[Cozy Chamber] Pinkeye and School
In August, the worst kind of storms and strong winds hit parts of the peninsula and devastated people in those regions. While people were recovering in the ruined areas, another disaster occurred, mostly in secondary schools. It was conjunctivitis, the so-called pinkeye virus that had as symptoms an irritated eye. It takes approximately two weeks to fully recover from such an irritation. If patients visit an ophthalmologist, perhaps it might be cured in ten days. With or without eyedrops and medication, it takes a while to get rid of the irritation, redness, and discomfort. Some of epidemic once considered gone are back again. When these diseases go around, it gets so prevalent that a large number of people suffer from them. This prevalency scares most common people, especially parents. Pinkeye caught on among school students. It was spread so expeditiously that schools had to shorten or close to let students stay home for a couple of days. The truth was some thoughtless kids rubbed their eyes with their hands after touching the kids with pinkeye. The sole purpose was to take a day or two off from school. It was indeed appalling to learn some middle and high school students actually did an unbelievably foolish thing in school. When I heard it from my own children, I shuddered in disgust. At the same time, I came to think about why they did such a silly thing just to have a day off.

Costs of Pinkeye
Pinkeye in cattle, often looked upon as just a troublesome disease, can be very costly. Throughout the United States, cattlemen have to deal with pinkeye, usually on a seasonal basis. When the problem disappears during colder weather, cattlemen often forget about the problem-until it comes time to sell their animals.
Most cattlemen know an animal infected with pinkeye usually won't sell at the auction barn. Other cattlemen are reluctant to buy another person's problems. They also find the scar tissue reduces the value of the animal because infected cattle tend to do poorly. Buyers don't want pinkeye animals in their herds. Show animals with pinkeye or pinkeye scar tissue won't sell to exhibitors.
If your animal does sell at the auction barn, the price is usually considerably less than for a comparable animal without the disease. Some state officials say the animal could bring as much as 5 cents a pound less. The loss could range up to $20 per head when treatment and veterinary costs are added.
An animal infected with pinkeye usually stops eating or will eat less. Officials say weight loss can be from 27 to 40 pounds per animal until it regains its eyesight. If the eyesight is lost permanently, the animal can be headed for more trouble such as losing its way on the open range and falling into a gully or being unable to find food or water.

Bright Sunlight May Add to Pinkeye Problems June, 1998
Marlene Werry, OMAF Beef Specialist
One of the truly costly diseases affecting the cattle industry is pinkeye. There can be serious economic impact to herds due to decreased growth rates, reduced milk production and a decline in value of feeder cattle or purebred breeding stock. Once thought to be only a summertime disease in white-faced cattle, pinkeye occurs at all seasons of the year and in all breeds of cattle. Moraxella bovis is the common infectious agent causing pinkeye. Pinkeye can be transmitted several different known ways, from direct contact with involved animals or indirectly by insect vectors (face flies). Pinkeye may be present any time of the year, but it is usually more prevalent during the summer months. Bright sunlight seems to add to the problems as well as dry, hot, dusty conditions, or tall grass with pollen and seed heads or other irritations. Herd symptoms may vary, but a rapid spread through the herd is common. Runny eyes, inflammation of the conjunctiva or lining of the eyelid and eyeball and ulceration of the cornea are common. http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/ilm/cdn/99articles/July/pinkeye.htm
Bovine Eye Diseases: Pinkeye Page Dinsmore, DVM, ILM-CSU The summer requires renewed attention to cattle eye health. The two most common problems-pinkeye and cancer eye-are responsible for serious losses due to:
  • reduced feed consumption from pain and blindness
  • treatment costs and milk discard from antibiotic use
  • reduced value at culling
  • This is the first of a two part article describing these two common conditions. Cancer eye will be discussed in the next issue. Pinkeye (Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis) is a contagious disease that damages the cornea (the clear portion of the eye) and conjunctiva. The causative agent is Moraxella bovis, but other factors such as direct sunlight and dust certainly contribute. Flies are important vectors involved in spread of the organism from one cow to another. The immune status of the cow also appears to play an important role in the disease occurrence. Cows are almost never affected with pinkeye more than once in their lifetimes, and seldom are affected in more than one eye. The progression of clinical signs of pinkeye is consistent and predictable. Excessive tearing, reddening of the conjunctiva, and frequent blinking (lacrimation, conjunctivitis, and blepharospasm) are followed within 1-2 days by corneal ulceration and cloudiness (edema). The ulcer begins in the center of the cornea and may expand to occupy most of the cornea. In severe cases the ulcer may erode the entire thickness of the cornea, resulting in rupture of the eye and permanent blindness. Corneal edema may quickly affect the entire cornea, resulting in the characteristic "blue eye" seen in advanced cases. The eye is blind and very painful and the animal will hold it shut and avoid the sun.
