What is Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH)? Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. IIH (also known as Pseudotumor Cerebri) is a condition of elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure in the absence of a mass in the brain. If untreated, IIH can cause visual loss and even blindness. What causes Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension? There are many reasons why a person can have elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure (brain mass, medications, infections, etc.). These possible causes for elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure must be excluded prior to diagnosing IIH. The cause of the elevation of cerebrospinal fluid pressure in IIH is not known ("idiopathic"). Who gets Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension? It is most common in overweight females of child-bearing age. It can occur in children and men, but this is less common. What are the common signs and symptoms of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension?

Pseudotumor Cerebri
Pseudotumor cerebri, also called benign intracranial hypertension, literally means "false brain tumor." It is caused by increased pressure within the brain and is most common in women between the ages of 20 and 50. Symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri, which include headache, nausea, vomiting, and pulsating intracranial noises, closely mimic symptoms of brain tumors, possibly because of the abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid placing pressure on the brain. Treatment for pseudotumor cerebri is generally symptomatic. Pressure may be controlled by removing excess fluid with repeated spinal taps or by shunting. Steroids may be prescribed to reduce swelling of brain tissue. Hyperosmotic drugs may be used to reduce fluid buildup. Once the diagnosis is made and the disorder is treated, pseudotumor cerebri generally has no serious consequences. If visual loss occurs, however, it may be premanent regardless of treatment. In some cases, pseudotumor cerebri recurs.

pseudotumor cerebri
A condition of increased pressure within the brain cavity, pseudotumor cerebri usually manifests itself as a bulging fontanelle in an otherwise happy and healthy infant, or as a sudden onset of strabismus in a child. It is also more properly known now as benign intracranial hypertension. This condition may be associated with some medicines (the antibiotic tetracycline, used in infants years ago but no longer, was the most common drug-related cause), may arise as a complication of mastoiditis , or may just happen mysteriously. Because intracranial hypertension might not have a benign cause , if you should notice these symptoms immediate consultation with your doctor is of course in order.

(Pseudotumor Cerebri)
A disorder characterized by increased intracranial pressure without evidence of an intracranial space-occupying lesion, obstruction of ventricular or subarachnoid pathways, infection, or hypertensive encephalopathy. Etiology is unknown in most instances; the condition undoubtedly includes several disorders with different causes. Pseudotumor is more common in women between ages 20 and 50, especially in those who are overweight. In children, it may follow the withdrawal of corticosteroids or excessive intake of vitamin A or tetracycline. Generally, recovery is spontaneous. Symptoms and signs include headache of varying severity (often mild) and papilledema in a patient who otherwise appears healthy. Partial or complete monocular visual lossthe only serious neurologic signoccurs in about 5% of patients, and the normal blind spots are commonly enlarged. CT and MRI scans generally are normal or show a somewhat small ventricular system. EEG is normal. CSF pressure is increased, but the fluid is normal. A similar picture can result from occlusion of an intracranial venous sinus affecting the posterior 1/3 of the sagittal sinus or one of the transverse or sigmoid sinuses; from increased intracranial pressure secondary to chronic CO

Pseudotumor Cerebri Signs and Symptoms
Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) is encountered most frequently in young, overweight women between the ages of 20 and 45. Headache is the most common presenting complaint, occurring in more than 90 percent of cases. Dizziness, nausea, and vomiting may also be encountered, but typically there are no alterations of consciousness or higher cognitive function. Tinnitus, or a "rushing" sound in the ears, is another frequent complaint. Visual symptoms are present in up to 70 percent of all patients with PTC, and include transient visual obscurations, general blurriness, and intermittent horizontal diplopia. These symptoms tend to worsen in association with Valsalva maneuvers and changes in posture. Reports of ocular pain, particularly with extreme eye movements, have also been noted. Pathophysiology
Pseudotumor cerebri is a syndrome disorder defined clinically by four criteria: (1) elevated intracranial pressure as demonstrated by lumbar puncture; (2) normal cerebral anatomy, as demonstrated by neuroradiographic evaluation; (3) normal cerebrospinal fluid composition; and (4) signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, including papilledema. While the mechanism of PTC is not fully understood, most experts agree that the disorder results from poor absorption of cerebrospinal fluid by the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The subsequent increase in extracerebral fluid volume leads to elevated intracranial pressure. However, because the process is slow and insidious, there is ample time for the ventricular system to compensate and this explains why there is no dilation of the cerebral ventricles in PTC. Increased intracranial pressure induces stress on the peripheral aspects of the brain, including the cranial nerves. Stagnation of axoplasmic flow in the optic nerve (CN II) results in papilledema and transient visual obscurations; when the abducens nerve (CN VI) is involved, the result is intermittent nerve palsy and diplopia.

What Is pseudotumor cerebri? There are two groups of patients who have pseudotumorcerebri. The first group has PTC connected to a specific cause.
http://home.sprynet.com/~sondra/whptc.html
What Is Pseudotumor Cerebri?
Simply put, there is too much cerebrospinal fluid in your head, and there's no place for this fluid to go. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the liquid that protects the brain and spinal cord from injury. Since your skull is an enclosed unit, the increased pressure from your excess CSF puts pressure on your brain (as well as your pituitary gland, optic nerves, and all the other things in your head). What you get is a true pressure headache. Why is there so much CSF? One theory is that your body has increased the formation of cerebrospinal fluid. Another theory is your body has a decreased ability to absorb CSF. Whatever is going on, something has changed with the circulation of your cerebrospinal fluid. There are two groups of patients who have pseudotumor cerebri. The first group has PTC connected to a specific cause. Once the cause is removed, the PTC can disappear. This group is referred to as secondary PTC because there is a known primary cause of the raised head pressure. The much larger second group develops pseudotumor cerebri and a direct cause cannot be found. The doctors have no idea what causes the
