Raynaud's phenomenon is a circulation disorder causing feet and hands to be very sensitive to cold. Symptoms may happen suddenly and often are triggered by emotional stress. Over a period of time it can result in a shrinkage of the affected area and even lead to ulcers, especially around fingernails and toenails. Raynaud's is more common in women than men. It may occur by itself or indicate another problem such as arteriosclerosis or Buerger's disease. Nutrient / Supplement Importance

WHAT ARE SPECIFIC TREATMENTS FOR RAYNAUD'S PHENOMENON?
Lifestyle Behaviors
The following are some lifestyle tips for managing Raynaud's phenomenon:
  • Keeping warm is the primary goal for preventing the onset of Raynaud's phenomenon. Air-conditioning and exposure to refrigeration can trigger this syndrome. If patients go out in cold weather, they should dress warmly with many layers. Wearing a hat is essential.
  • Living in a warm climate may help relieve symptoms, although a recent study found that weather changes themselves had little effect on the disorder.
  • Exercise is helpful in maintaining a sense of well being, in keeping warm, and helping to sustain skin pliability. (Patients with Raynaud's phenomenon may want to avoid exercising outdoors in cold weather, however.)
  • Quitting smoking is, of course, essential for anyone, but it is critical for people with scleroderma.
  • Patients would be wise to seek relaxation and anti-stress techniques, which might help reduce some triggers of Raynaud's phenomenon. Many effective methods are available [ see Well-Connected Report #31

Painful Breastfeeding
by Cecilia Moen
Ingrid was born at Ostra Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden in December 1996. We had breastfeeding problems from the start: first we were seperated at birth and then later she developed a fever and was taken to another ward where she was given formula (despite my protests).
Poor Ingrid! I tried to breastfeed her, but she was so confused she just cried. It would take up to two hours for her just to get latched on. So I pumped and fed her with a spoon (after having my milk weighed by staff). I felt like a total failure. After five days I finally found someone who had the necessary skills to get Ingrid latched on again properly. After the longest week of my life we went home.
A week later an ache began deep in the center of my breasts. They felt bruised and my nipples started to hurt, shifting in colour from red to white. When I asked, I was told this was perfectly normal. I had a thrush test done, that proved negative. As the days passed nursing became more and more painful. At three weeks I began using a nipple shield just to cope. At the weekly check-ups Ingrid was gaining weight slowly. I was asked to supplement with formula, but refused. Then I went home and cried, feeling like a total failure again.
When Ingrid increased her feedings at around five weeks I used Syntocinon spray to help the let-down (and lessen the pressure on the nipple). I began to wonder if something wasn't seriously wrong. I tried to get a friend to nurse Ingrid, hoping she would be able to say if Ingrid was doing something wrong with her mouth, but Ingrid refused to cooperate.

    Raynaud's Disease, Phenomenon
Raynaud's syndrome, first described in 1862 by the French physician Maurice Raynaud, has no known cause or cure. The syndrome is a condition in which small arteries, most commonly in the fingers and toes, spasm and cause the skin to turn pale or a patchy red to blue. Estimates of its prevalence range from 5 to 30% of the population. It is 5 times more common in women, often striking females between the ages of 18 and 30. It is thought that 25 to 30% of cases occur in otherwise healthy women (Browne et al. 1995). (Life Extension Foundation)

Question Posted By: mary on Friday, January 15, 1999
I am looking for information on Raynauds phenomenon: What causes it? What is the treatment? I have been told it is caused by low blood pressure and by overactive arteries. One suggested treatment was verapamil (for high blood pressure). I have low blood pressure and am worried verapamil would take it dangerously lower. Please help! Thanks!
Raynauds syndrome is characterized by episodic painful blanching of the fingers and is thought to be caused by digital artery spasm. It was first described by Raynaud in 1862. Over half of the patients with this have some underlying systemic disease such as a connective tissue disorder. Local trauma such as pneumatic drills can induce the symptoms. Certain drugs can also induce symilar problems as well as vascular thoracic outley syndrome. Treatment is aimed at prevention of precipitating factors. Surgery has been tried on the sympathetic truck with variable and generally not very effective results. Calcium channel blockers have been used such as verapamil in some patients but can affect the blood pressure. medications aimed at affecting prostaglandins are also being explored due to there vasodilating effects. Good luck

In Reply to: Raynaud's phenomenon posted by Barbara Shelton on June 04, 1997 at 00:06:15: : I had back surgery approximately one year ago. Since this proceedure was done-fusion at L4-L5 and S1-my right foot has been cold incomparison to the other foot. The surgery required a vascular surgeon. The proceedure was done both through the front and the back. My doctor thinks that a nerve was damaged during the surgery and that since the condition has not improved in the year's time it most likely will never. My question, is this Raynaud's phenomenon or is this nerve damage and should I be concerned with the difference in temperature. During the winter months the discomfort is great. My right foot tends to "freeze" when we go to the mountains. I am concerned and would like to know if there is any testing to be done to make sure that all is a ok and there is no danger to my toes or foot.

Associated Conditions So what is an Associated condition? Lets look at Arthritis, Rheumatism or any combinations of the two. Millions of people in the world suffer from those conditions but very few of them have Lupus. However sure as hell every Lupus sufferer has some kind of arthritic/rheumatic condition. Ergo they are associated conditions! Maybe that is a little simplistic but if we take for instance the Raynauds Phenomenon we will see that it occurs along with a number of other diseases one of them being Lupus and as we examine each of these conditions we will see the thread between all of them and Lupus. In addition to those conditions I have included two others with direct connections with Arthritis/Rheumatism and are accepted as being associated with or caused by Lupus. They are Fybromyalgia and Vasculitis. All of the above conditions/syndromes, call them what you like have a strong connective tissue disorder/autoimmune disease connection and all of them require all or some of the Lupus treatments
The story doesn't end there, as there are also the conditions caused by the side effects of the cocktail of drugs Lupus sufferers are required to take. In Monica's case she has developed Osteoporosis solely due to taking high dosages of steroids over a prolonged period of time. Others sufferers will I'm sure have there own tales to tell!

http://www.geocities.com/raynauds_help/ Raynaud's syndrome is the term used for a set of symptoms characteristic of
peripheral vascular disease, namely caused by an inappropriate response of the
peripheral arteries in reaction to environmental stimuli usually to the cold.
The term primary Raynaud's or Raynaud's disease is used when no underlying
disease can be found. The term secondary Raynaud's, or Raynaud's phenomenon or
syndrome, is used when an underlying disease is primarily causative and a range
of symptoms including the peripheral vascular spasm and the Raynaud's condition
is secondary as a result of this underlying disease. However, today the term
Raynaud's is often used medically along with the investigation of symptoms and
signs of underlying disorders (mostly connective tissue/autoimmune disorders) to

    http://www.hjd.org/hospitals/hjd/html/body_scleroderma.html
Scleroderma Scleroderma is a connective tissue disease, the origin of which is unknown, characterized by fibrosis, or thickening by scar tissue, of the skin and sometimes internal organs. Since many of the patients have autoantibodies in the blood it is considered an autoimmune disorder. Almost all patients with scleroderma have Raynauds phenomenon and with exposure to cold temperature their fingers and sometimes toes become painful and turn first white, then blue and red. Scleroderma can be divided into those with limited skin involvement or those with more generalized skin involvement. Limited skin disease can be accompanied by additional features including skin Calcinosis, Raynauds phenomenon, abnormalities of the Esophagus (food pipe), Sclerodactyly (tightening of skin on the fingers) and skin Telangiectasias (spider veins). This type of scleroderma is referred to as CREST syndrome. Patients with diffuse, generalized skin fibrosis may have the type of sclerodenna known as systemic sclerosis and may develop fibrosis involving the lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract and kidneys.
