REYES SYNDROME WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Reyes Syndrome is a rare and often fatal illness that develops rapidly and can be a complication of the flu or chicken pox in children. It can also cause severe brain damage. Reyes Syndrome has been linked to the use of aspirin in the treatment of these viral infections. It is highly recommended that aspirin should not be given to children 19 years of age and under who are suffering from the flu or chicken pox. There appears to be no danger in giving aspirin to otherwise healthy children for simple pain or minor cuts or other injuries. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? The symptoms include sudden, severe vomiting, violent headaches, hyperactive or combative behavior, personality and behavior changes in those who appear to be recovering from a viral infection. The symptoms progress to listlessness, sleeping constantly, and possibly convulsions and coma. If these symptoms are present, parents are advised to seek immediate medical attention. HOW IS IT TREATED? Treatment of Reyes Syndrome requires hospitalization.

Children's Health Infants Toddlers Chickenpox ... Information Reyes Syndrome Basic Information R. Douglas Reye, M.D. an Australian pathologist, first recognized Reye’s syndrome as a distinct disease in 1963. The symptoms, however, had appeared as early as 1929. Reye’s (pronounced “rye”) syndrome is a disease believed to be triggered by the ingestion of medicines (such as aspirin) that contain salicylate (pronounced “sa liss a late”) that affects all the organs of the body but affects the liver and brain lethally. It is considered to be a two phase illness because it is almost always associated with a previous viral infection such as influenza, cold or chicken pox. It is not contagious and the cause is unknown. In Reye’s syndrome, the level of ammonia and acidity rises while the sugar level drops. At the same time the liver may swell and develop fat deposits. Swelling can also develop in the brain and cause such emergency symptoms as seizures or convulsions and eventually lead to coma and brain death. After Reyes Syndrome was identified in 1963, the number of recognized cases began to increase during the 1970’s. In 1980 the number of cases peeked in the U.S. at 555. After that the figure began a sharp decline. In 1984-94 there were no more than 36 cases of Reye’s syndrome per year, and since then only a few cases have been reported each year.

Be wise about Reyes Syndrome Awareness Bulletin Reye’s Syndrome is a very serious disease that you should know about. Some people develop Reye’s Syndrome as they are getting over a viral illness like the flu or chicken pox. Reye’s Syndrome usually affects people from infancy through young adulthood; however, no age group is immune. It can develop 3 to 5 days after the onset of chicken pox, upper respiratory infection or other fever causing illnesses. It affects the liver and brain, is not contagious and often is diagnosed as encephilitis, meningitis, diabetes, poisoning, drug overdose or sudden infant death. Typically, Reye’s occurs after a viral infection has run its course; the person seems to be recovering and begins to feel better. A person’s life can depend on early diagnosis. Watch for these symptoms, usually occurring in this order:
  • Relentless or continuous vomiting Listlessness (loss of pep and energy with little interest in their environment) Drowsiness (excessive sleepiness) Personality Change (such as irritability, slurred speech, sensitivity to touch)

Reyes Syndrome 40040 M Fatty Change
Reye's syndrome is an acute post-viral illness, found mostly in young children. It usually occurs 3-5 days after the viral illness. Patients develop an encephalopathy of varying degrees of severity. In the liver there is microvesicular steatosis (fatty change), as demonstrated by this fat stain.
There is a suspected association with aspirin ingestion, which used to be given quite commonly to control the fever of the original viral infection. As the use of aspirin as an antipyretic in young children has decreased, so has the incidence of Reye's syndrome.

Is Your Child Prone to Getting Colds?
Food Allergies A food allergy develops when the body’s immune system becomes misdirected and attacks harmless food proteins. More than 6,000,000 Americans have food allergies with varying degrees of severity; at least 8% of children less than 3 years of age and 2% of the adult population in the United States. Hundreds die each year from food allergy and more than 30,000 others experience potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions from foods. Ninety percent (90 %) of all food allergic reactions are caused by: Egg Peanut Tree Nuts Fish Shellfish (Walnut, pecan, etc.) Milk Soy Wheat Children of parents with any type of allergy are particularly at risk. Even children without any family history of allergies can develop severe food allergies. At the beginning of each school year parents fill out a yellow emergency card that is kept in the clinic. Medical information, including food allergies, should be listed on the back and the treatment required. The cafeteria’s computer system will have food allergy information. This helps prevent accidental ingestion by flagging a student’s account at checkout from the cafeteria line. However, younger students do not go through the computer check out for their food to be evaluated. Please keep this in mind when children are ordering. Check with you child’s teacher before providing snacks or treats to your child’s class. Students should be educated on foods they need to avoid. Sharing food is not permitted unless the teacher, due to the severity of some student’s allergies, gives permission.

Facts About Reyes Syndrome
Reye's Syndrome is a very serious disease that often develops during cold, flu and chickenpox seasons. The disease occurs after a viral illness begins to wane, although it can occur within three to five days of the onset and can affect any age group from infants to adults. This disease affects all organs of the body but its main targets are the liver and brain. It is a two-phase illness because it is thought to be connected to a previous viral infection. One danger of Reye's is that it is often difficult to diagnose and is often misdiagnosed as meningitis, encephalitis, drug overdose, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, diabetes, or even psychiatric illness. In Reye's Syndrome, abnormal concentrations of fat begin to develop in the liver and other organs of the body along with a severe increase of pressure on the brain. Quick and accurate diagnosis is essential in this life-threatening disease. While the cause is unknown, it is known that Reye's is not contagious. However, it is life-threatening and staff should be aware of the symptoms. If you have a child in your center recovering from a virus, watch for these symptoms during the 2 to 3 weeks following the illness:
  • Constant vomiting
  • Loss of energy and drowsiness
  • Personality changes such as slurred speech, irritability, aggressive behavior or sensitivity to touch

Come ask the experts what you want to know about pediatric health! A selection of answers to your questions will be posted on the site each week. The question: What pain reliever should I give to my child? What's the difference between acetaminophen and ibuprofen, and why should we avoid aspirin? The Pediatrician Answers: Pain relievers are also called analgesics in medicine, and there are many kinds. One of the oldest and most popular analgesics is aspirin (or acetylsalicylic acid). In the latter part of this century, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) have all been developed as well.
