Contrary to popular belief, ringworm is not a worm at all but is a skin infection that is caused by a fungus. It can infect both animals and people and can easily be transmitted back and forth from pets to human family members once established in a household. This fungus is everywhere. Microsporum canis is in the ground and in the air. Little spores will land on susceptible skin and grow in a red circle ring like rash. Cats and dogs can both get ringworm. They get scaling of the skin and show local lesions that look like "cigarette ash" deposits. Infection in cats is often not noticed. Kittens and puppies are most often affected as their immune system is not yet developed enough to resist the fungus. Ringworm is characterized by rapidly growing circular patches of scaly, red skin. There is also marked hair loss in these areas and in some cases the skin will ooze a sticky, crusty substance. Both younger animals and people seem more susceptible to becoming infected with ringworm than are adults. Children should avoid handling animals infected with ringworm altogether.

RINGWORM
Dear Alice, I have obtained ringworm from my kitten! What is the best treatment for me to get rid of it and stop the itching?
Before Alice addresses ringworm treatment options, let her first briefly describe ringworm. Ringworm is a skin disease that is not caused by worms, but by fungus. You can have ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) and of the body's hairless skin (tinea corporis). Fungus can also infect toenails and feet (also known as athlete's foot read Athlete's Foot and More on athlete's foot in Alice's General Health archives for more information). Ringworm is contagious. Basically, ringworm is transmitted via fungal agents by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected individuals and pets (your cat, for instance), and by indirect contact with personal items used by infected individuals, such as hai r, combs, brushes, hats, bedsheets, hairpins, floors, and bathtubs. Considering the contagious and infectious nature of ringworm, anyone is susceptible. It does not discriminate, although children and adults seem to be more prone to infection by differing kinds of ringworm. In addition, athletes participating in contact sports, such as wrestling and football, are at higher risk. Appropriate precautions must be taken to avoid infection, spread, and reinfection, such as showering after each sports play, regularly washing contacted surfaces, laundering clothes after every sports activity, avoiding clothes- and towel-sharing, and being aware of who is infected on the team.

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection of the skin that has nothing to do with worms. It can be itchy, but it's not painful or dangerous. It's the same fungus that causes athlete's foot. In young children it usually affects only the torso or scalp. If your child has ringworm on his torso, he'll have a rash of one or several red rings on his chest, stomach, thighs, or back. The rings are usually crusty or scaly on the outside and smooth in the middle. As the fungus grows, the rings get larger. When the fungus affects the scalp it usually appears as dandruff or bald spots. It can be dry and crusty, or moist and filled with pus. It's easy to confuse ringworm of the scalp with dandruff or cradle cap . Since toddlers are usually too young for dandruff and too old for cradle cap, the chances are that these symptoms are ringworm. If you aren't sure what your toddler has, consult your doctor.

RINGWORM
(Tinea Corporis) What is Ringworm?
This is a fungal infection of the skin. It is NOT a worm! It is the same type of infection as athlete’s foot, only it is caused by a different fungus, in a different location (the body, not the feet). It is classically described as being in non-hairy areas such as the face, trunk, arms and legs. It is called ringworm because it most often is round or oval with a raised border, like a ring (it can vary, however, in its appearance). It tends to be slightly scaly with a clearer center. There may be only one spot, or multiple spots, which often seem to "connect" with each other. It does not itch significantly. Where do you get it from? It is acquired from close skin contact with other infected persons (co-sleeping or wrestling, for example), or from infected domestic animals, especially young kittens and puppies. How do we treat it?

Hello! My name is Razzmatazz, but everyone calls me Razz. Today I will be talking to mew about a skin disease that is often seen in cats. It is called ringworm. The medical term fur this disease is dermtophytosis.
What Causes Ringworm?
The name "Ringworm" is a bit confusing, because it sounds like it is caused by a worm. It is not! Ringworm is actually a fungal infection that is caused by several varieties of fungi. It is a very contagious disease. It can be easily spread from cat to cat and to other animals, including humans.
Who Gets Ringworm?
Younger cats under the age of one year are the most susceptible to ringworm. This is because their immune systems are immature. It is also more common in multi-cat households and in long-haired cats.
Symptoms
The most common symptom of Ringworm is alopecia, the loss of hair. There could be one or more affected areas, depending on the severity of the disease. Other symptoms may include the loss of hair, scaling, crusting, thickening and reddening of the skin.
Diagnosis
There are three tests used to confirm the diagnosis of Ringworm. They are examination under an ultra-violet light, direct microscopic examination of the hairs, nails or scales and a fungal culture.

Ringworm Infection in Cats Some Frequently Asked Questions

WHY WAS THE RINGWORM PROJECT SET UP ?
THE SKIN DISEASE resulting from ringworm infection is often mild and localised; in some cats it can become severe and/or generalised at times involving secondary bacterial infections and causing considerable distress to the cat. Some of these infections prove very prolonged and can be extremely difficult to cure. THE RISK OF SPREAD OF INFECTION TO MAN is of considerable importance as the disease, particularly in children, can be very severe. Concerns over the risk of infecting children may result in the euthanasia of cats in some households. CATS WITH RINGWORM SUFFER from the loneliness of prolonged isolation, the unpleasantness of long periods of medication and the discomfort of shaving and bathing, which is often necessary.
WHAT IS RINGWORM?
Ringworm is the name given to an infection of the skin, hair and/or nails caused by one of a group of fungi known collectively as dermatophytes. While there are several dozen different species of dermatophytes, almost all infections in cats (around 93%) are due to a single species called Microsporum canis

Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and the Library at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas . Health Watch is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics. A ringworm infection isn't a cause for panic.
If your children develop ringworm, they're not alone. Up to 15 percent of American children under the age of 10 will develop ringworm. It doesn't reflect on your parenting skills or the cleanliness of your home. In spite of its name, ringworm doesn't involve a worm at all. It's a fungal infection that afflicts the scalp. Symptoms include itching, scaling, pimple-like bumps and temporary, patchy hair loss. In some cases, children with a ringworm infection will have slight swelling in the lymph nodes. The infection is usually spread by person-to-person contact, although there is one form that can be spread from animals to people. If the infection isn't treated and the scalp inflammation becomes intense and lasts a long time, there is potential for scarring and permanent hair loss, but this is rare.
The good news, according to Dr. Robin Carder, a dermatologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, is that ringworm is fairly easy to treat. You'll need to visit a doctor to get the diagnosis confirmed and to get a prescription for an oral anti-fungal medication. Special shampoos that contain an anti-fungal ingredient like selenium sulfide or ketoconazole can help keep the infection from spreading. These can be found in a drugstore or supermarket in the section where anti-dandruff shampoos are displayed. There are also prescription-strength formulas available.

V. Dogs and Cats: Ringworm INDEX A bad case of ringworm on a dog or cat isn't hard to miss. It's not a worm, but a fungus, and can cause bald, flaky, sometimes circular patches on your pet's head, ears, paws and back. In a case that's not so severe, signs of infection can sometimes be difficult to detect-perhaps there may be only a few broken hairs. And some animals can carry the fungus and show no symptoms at all. But whether the infection is obvious or hard to spot, ringworm is easily transmitted and highly contagious to other pets and humans, too. If your pet has a lot of hair, it's a good idea to trim the fur around the flaky patches. An electric trimmer works best. This will make the area easier to treat and will help stop the fungus from gaining more ground. Remember to wash your hands after your treat or touch your pet. Use a mild bleach solution, followed by plain soap and water. The patches will clear up in about one to three weeks, but you may want to keep your infected pet separated from other animals in the household in the meantime.

Definition
Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin. The name is a misnomer since the disease is not caused by a worm. Description
More common in males than in females, ringworm is characterized by patches of rough, reddened skin. Raised eruptions usually form the circular pattern that gives the condition its name. Ringworm may also be referred to as dermatophyte infection. As lesions grow, the centers start to heal. The inflamed borders expand and spread the infection. Types of ringworm
Ringworm is a term that is commonly used to encompass several types of fungal infection. Sometimes, however, only body ringworm is classified as true ringworm. Body ringworm (tinea corporis) can affect any part of the body except the scalp, feet, and facial area where a man's beard grows. The well-defined, flaky sores can be dry and scaly or moist and crusty. Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) is most common in children. It causes scaly, swollen blisters or a rash that looks like black dots. Sometimes inflamed and filled with pus, scalp ringworm lesions can cause crusting, flaking, and round bald patches. Most common in black children, scalp ringworm can cause scarring and permanent hair loss. Ringworm of the groin (tinea cruris or jock itch) produces raised red sores with well-marked edges. It can spread to the buttocks, inner thighs, and external genitals.

Ringworm What is ringworm? Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus that can affect the scalp, skin, fingers, toe nails or foot. Who gets ringworm? Anyone can get ringworm. Children may be more susceptible to certain varieties while adults may be more affected with other varieties. How are ringworm infections spread? Transmission of these fungal agents can occur by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected people or pets, or indirectly by contact with items such as barber clippers, hair from infected people, shower stalls or floors. What are the symptoms of ringworm infections? Small pimple
Hair Brittle and Breaks easily
Yellowish Cuplike Crusty Area
Scaling and Cracking of Skin
How soon do symptoms appear? The incubation period is unknown for most of these agents, however ringworm of the scalp is usually seen 10 to 14 days after contact and ringworm of the body is seen four to 10 days after initial contact. Does infection with ringworm make a person immune? Since so many species of fungus can cause ringworm, infection with one species will not make a person immune to future infections.

RARITAN, N.J., Sept. 16,1996 As teachers prepare for another year of getting the three "R's" reading, (w)riting and (a)rithmetic into their student's heads, health care professionals are concerned about keeping a fourth "R" out of them. "Ringworm of the scalp, more commonly known as tinea capitis, is a contagious infectious disease, says Mary Gail Mercurio, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York. " While it is not tracked by U.S. health authorities, there is general agreement among health care professionals that its prevalence has been increasing steadily over the past few years, and that it now constitutes a significant public health problem in this country. Screening by school nurses is crucial because of the contagious nature of tinea capitis, and because early recognition and treatment are essential both to slowing the spread of infection and to preventing reinfection." Dr. Mercurio, along with several other health care professionals, recently participated in a roundtable discussion on what school nurses need to know about identifying and managing fungal infections of the scalp. The discussion will be published as a special educational supplement to the October issue of "Journal of School Nursing."
