More Americans Now Enter Danger Years For Rosacea Mary Erhard With the 77 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 (nearly one in three Americans) now entering the most dangerous years for developing rosacea, the number of adults suffering from this embarrassing and potentially disfiguring disorder of the facial skin is expected to increase in the years ahead. According to a recent National Rosacea Society survey of more than 2,000 rosacea sufferers, 44 percent reported that their symptoms had first appeared in their 30s and 40s, and 43 percent first experienced rosacea after age 50. Now that the oldest members of the baby boom generation are turning 50 and the youngest are 32, they have fully reached the prime years for developing this conspicuous condition that today affects an estimated one in 20 Americans. "While the incidence of rosacea appears to be rising sharply as more people enter the most susceptible age, many mistakenly think it's just a complexion problem that will go away by itself but in fact it usually keeps growing worse if left unchecked," said Dr. Joseph Bikowski, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh. "Of greatest concern is that only a small percentage of rosacea sufferers realize that medical help is available from dermatologists to halt its progression and reverse its symptoms." According to a Gallup survey, only 27 percent of Americans had heard of rosacea. Because of its alarming, acne-like effect on personal appearance, however, it can cause devastating psychological and social problems in addition to its physical effects.

Rosacea Rosacea, (rose-AY-sha) is a common skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face. Often referred to as "adult acne," rosacea may begin as a tendency to flush or blush easily, and progress to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. It also may involve the ears, chest and back. As the disease progresses, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area; however, unlike acne, there are no blackheads. When it first develops, rosacea may come and go on its own. When the skin doesn't return to its normal color and when other symptoms, such as pimples and enlarged blood vessels, become visible, it's best to seek advice from a dermatologist. The condition rarely reverses itself and may last for years. It can become worse without treatment.
How to Recognize Rosacea
Early symptoms of Rosacea Pimples of rosacea appear on the face as small, red bumps, some of which may contain pus.

14 Million Americans Have Rosacea
And Most of Them Don't Know It Rosacea cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Click here to learn more about this conspicuous condition. Rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha) is a common but little-known disorder of the facial skin that affects an estimated 14 million Americans and most of them don't know it. In fact, while rosacea is becoming increasingly widespread as the populous baby boom generation enters the most susceptible ages, a Gallup survey found that 78 percent of Americans have no knowledge of this disease, including how to recognize it and what to do about it. Because of its red-faced, acne-like effects on personal appearance, however, it can cause significant psychological, social and occupational problems if left untreated. In recent surveys by the National Rosacea Society, nearly 70 percent of rosacea patients said this condition had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem, and 41 percent reported it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements. Among rosacea patients with severe symptoms, nearly 70 percent said the disorder had adversely affected their professional interactions, and nearly 30 percent said they had even missed work because of their condition. While the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is no cure, today medical help is available that can control the signs and symptoms of this potentially life-disruptive disorder. Any one of the following warning signs is a signal to see a dermatologist or other knowledgeable physician for diagnosis and appropriate treatment before the signs and symptoms become increasingly severe:

Acne Rosacea
Marian S. Macsai, Mark J. Mannis, and Arthur C. Huntley
DISEASE ENTITY Acne rosacea is a chronic acneiform disorder affecting both the skin and the eye. It is a syndrome of undetermined etiology characterized by both vascular and papulopustular components involving the face and occasionally the neck and upper trunk. Clinical findings are usually limited to the sun exposed areas of the face and chest and include mid facial erythema, telangiectasias, papules and pustules, and sebaceous gland hypertrophy. Rosacea is characterized by episodic flushing of affected areas, which may be associated with consumption of alcohol, hot drinks, or spicy foods. During inflammatory episodes, affected areas of the skin, primarily the convexities of the face, develop swelling, papules, and pustules. The skin lesions are notable for the absence of comedones, which distinguishes this disorder from acne vulgaris. Rhinophyma is a late finding. Ocular rosacea is a term used to describe the spectrum of eye findings associated with the skin involvement. Ocular involvement may include meibomian gland dysfunction and/or chronic staphylococcal lid disease, recurrent chalazia, chronic conjunctivitis, peripheral corneal neovascularization, marginal corneal infiltrates with or without ulceration, episcleritis and iritis. Occasionally, the ocular manifestations may precede skin involvement, delaying the diagnosis. KEY CLINICAL POINTS Definition

Rosacea and Its Treatment What is rosacea?
Rosacea (say "rose-ay-shah") is a disease that affects the skin on the face. It often begins as redness that looks like a blush across the nose, cheeks, chin or forehead. As time goes on, red pimples and pus-filled bumps may appear. Some people also notice small blood vessels across their nose and cheeks. In some people, the skin of the nose may become red and thick. This is called rhinophyma (say "rye-no-fie-muh"). Rosacea can also affect the eyes. It may irritate and inflame the eyelids and the white part of the eye. This is called conjunctivitis. What causes rosacea and who gets it? No one knows the cause of rosacea. There may not be just one cause. Rosacea tends to run in fair-skinned families and tends to occur in people who blush easily. Symptoms usually begin in adults between the ages of 30 and 50. Women are more likely to get rosacea on the cheeks and chin, but men are more likely to get rhinophyma. Rosacea tends to be more severe in men. Can rosacea be cured?

Rosacea is a disorder of the follicles and surrounding skin that usually occurs on the forehead, nose, and chin. It involves reddening, acnelike lesions, and broken blood vessels. Rosacea improves and worsens in unpredictable cycles. The exact cause is unknown. Causes and Risk Factors Although rosacea can appear at any age, it is most prevalent between 30 and 60 years old. It occurs about equally in men and women, although most severe cases usually are seen in men. Rosacea seems to have a genetic component. Individuals whose family members have rosacea, have a higher incidence of the disorder than the general population. Emotional and physical stress, windy conditions, heat, and sun exposure can exacerbate rosacea. Dietary triggers include dairy products, certain spices, hot liquids, and alcohol.

Types of Rosacea, Their Causes and Treatments
Information on rosacea, (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha), has often been clouded by popular misconceptions about the skin disorder. It is not, as many people suppose, adult acne, although it is often referred to as acne rosacea . Symptoms are also often misunderstood: a red nose is not evidence of alcoholism or heavy drinking. W.C. Fields' red nose and his struggles with alcohol abuse linked the two problems in popular culture.
This site offers information on rosacea, its symptoms, and how it is treated. Rosacea is a chronic blood vessel disorder that most often develops between the ages of thirty and forty. The disorder affects both men and women (women are marginally more likely to develop it, and men are more likely to develop rhinophyma , the condition that caused Field's red nose). Fair skinned people with blue eyes are most likely to suffer from the disorder, but it can affect anyone.
Rosacea is a disorder of the facial blood vessels. Blood vessels just below the skin dilate and enlarge, causing blotchy redness and excessive flushing.

Recognizing rosacea
Could you be misdiagnosing this common skin disorder?
Larry Millikan, MD VOL 105 / NO 2 / FEBRUARY 1999 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables Preview : Awareness of rosacea is growing as those making up the largest segment of the population, the baby boomers, reach the age when onset is most prevalent. Patients are often disheartened that there is no cure for the condition, but as Dr Millikan explains, early diagnosis and patient compliance with treatment can greatly minimize symptoms and prevent severe complications. A lthough rosacea is now recognized as a common skin disorder, it has been misunderstood and misdiagnosed for centuries. In the past, rosacea was often mistakenly attributed to alcoholism or acne, and early treatments included blood-letting, application of leeches, and use of topical salves. Rosacea is now recognized as a distinct medical condition that requires early diagnosis and appropriate management to minimize patient discomfort and psychological distress. The disease develops gradually. Initially, patients may be unaware of their condition and thus not seek medical attention, thinking the redness, flushing, and occasional papules or pustules of rosacea are simply normal flushing, adult acne, or sunburn. However, early recognition is important because untreated rosacea can lead to disfigurement and potential vision loss (1). There is no specific test for rosacea, but its characteristic appearance, cutaneous distribution, discrete course, typical target population, and response to various therapies make accurate diagnosis possible.
