Scarlet fever
Definition: Scarlet fever is a disease caused by an infection of the throat with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal bacteria ( strep throat
Alternative Names: Scarlatina
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Scarlet fever was once a very serious childhood disease, but now is easily treatable. The incubation period is short, generally 1-2 days. Illness typically begins with a fever and sore throat. It may be accompanied by chills, vomiting, abdominal pain, and malaise. The streptococcal bacteria produces a toxin that causes a rash that appears one to two days after the onset of illness. The rash usually first appears on the neck and chest, then spreads over the body. It is described as "sandpapery" in quality. The texture of the rash is more important than the appearance in confirming the diagnosis. The rash can last for over a week. As the rash fades, peeling (desquamation) may occur around the finger tips, toes, and groin area. The main risk factors is infection with the bacteria that causes strep throat . A history of strep throat or scarlet fever in the community, neighborhood, or school may increase the risk of infection.

Infection Prevention It's In Your Hands
Infection control is an effort shared by every health care providerand one that begins on the individual level. Each year, during the third week of October, APIC promotes the practice of infection control through International Infection Control Week. Infection Control Week provides a forum for infection control professionals help their colleagues rededicate themselves to a regimen of effective preventive measures to control the spread of infection. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness and appreciation for the essential services provided by infection control professionals. International Infection Control Week Resource Kit
Infection Control Week gives us opportunities to recruit new champions for our campaign against the spread of infection. Taking control of the elusive enemy, germs, is a battle that rages on and a battle that we all need tools and tactics for outwitting. APIC members will find the latest armory of tools in this 2001 Infection Control Resource Kit published only on the APIC Web site. These tools are designed to help you inform other healthcare workers, patients, and the general public about the importance of infection control and prevention and empower them to take control. Patient Safety
Patient safety is one of the nation's most pressing healthcare challenges. Medical errors are a leading cause of death and injury. A recent report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) estimates that as many as 44,000-98,000 people die in U.S. hospitals each year as the result of lapses in patient safety. This means that more people die from medical errors than from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS. Preventable healthcare-related injuries cost the economy $17-29 billion annually.

Scarlet fever, also known as scarlatina, was once one of the most serious scourges of childhood, sweeping through families like wildfire and causing numerous deaths. But with modern antibiotics, the disease is far less dangerous and less common than it used to be. The disease is an upper respiratory infection caused by a streptococcal bacteria and associated with a sore throat and distinctive red rash. It most often strikes children between the ages of 2 and 10. The bacteria that causes scarlet fever releases a toxin, producing the bright red rash that gives the illness its name. Other than the rash, the symptoms and progress of scarlet fever are the same as those of strep throat. What are the symptoms?

Prepare for a trickle-down outbreak of cinematic redheadedness

    YOUR CHILDREN TOMORROW!
October 2, 2001 Search for a cure on the message boards! Prepare yourselves for a rash of redheads a red, red rashthat has already begun and seems to have no end in sight! The ladies of the Digest staff, ever aware of potential trends coming down the pipeline, were first disturbed when they noticed two dramatic switches to red...then three...then four ... Come on: Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman play with fire all the time. But the following evidence proves, without a doubt, that there's some new contagion spreading through Hollywood.
So what's the big deal? Do we have a thing against redheads? Hell noespecially not real ones. The problem is when you have a massive, artificial Hollywood trend. Not only is dyeing hell on your hair, but red in particular is often a crutch lazy screenwriters (and even the actresses themselves!) use to convey charactereven more blatantly than with brunette and blonde. (Real redheads in the house? We're counting on you to demand more realistic portrayals than "redheads are either bitchy or spunky, and often slutty.")
Some of the actresses pictured do, in fact, still look lovely even in the throes of contagion, much the way consumption was said to bring that feverish bloom to the Victorians' cheeks... As for the other, less fortunate redheads below, they are the real cause for alarm. Because we all know that what we see at the theater, we see two weeks later in the salon and thence on the street...and if it looks this bad on the screen, how horrifying will it be in front of you in the Quickie Mart line? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cureSAVE YOURSELVES WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!

This essay is written from my heart. I was unable to have children all my life due to my mother having scarlet fever while I was developing inside her womb, I was told at the young age of 14 that I was unable to have children due to the intense scaring on my own reproductive organs while my mother carried me with such a great fever. As far as I know the only real damage was to my fallopian tubes. I have considered adopting from any world source possible, i.e.: Romanian etc., but those markets want between 17 and 20 thousand dollars! I don't have that to spend! It would take all the money to adopt and then I would have no money left over to actually raise the child. Trying to adopt an American child is even harder and more expensive. My husband is a very gentle and kind man but he is learning impaired and also has a few minor physical defects like stumped toes, which kept him out of the military, which we would not care to pass on to a baby even if I could ever conceive normally. My only other option would be to become inseminated, again at an ungodly cost with very little guarantee the pregnancy would take. I have a friend that has been inseminated several times with no luck and now she is financially broke and has to stop trying.

    STREP THROAT
    KIDS AND SCARLET FEVER

Sometimes, streptococcus gives children not only a sore throat but also a rash. One to seven days after infection, the bacteria produce a toxin, a type of poison that travels through the bloodstream and causes the rash. This illness is called scarlet fever. It affects mostly children ages 2 to 10. Rarely does it strike adults. Ten days of oral antibiotics or a single shot of penicillin will usually knock out the fever, sore throat, and headache, but the rash may linger. With treatment, most children will recover fully. Symptoms of scarlet fever vary, but usually you'll find:
    • First day: fever from 101 to 104 degrees; red, sore throat; fuzzy tongue; white coating on tonsils; headache; swollen neck glands; sometimes vomiting. By the second day: a bright red rash breaks out on the face (except around the mouth), upper body, and in the groin area. By the third day: the rash feels like fine sandpaper and sometimes itches and spreads to the rest of the body. The child's temperature falls, and the tongue turns bright red. By the sixth day: the rash fades and the skin and tongue may peel, exposing raw, tender skin. This peeling may go on for 10 to 14 days.
