Is Sciatica a Disorder or a Symptom?
The term "sciatica" is commonly used to describe pain traveling in the distribution of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is a symptom caused by a disorder occurring in the lumbar spine. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, about the diameter of a finger. Sciatic nerve fibers begin at the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebra (L4, L5) and the first few segments of the sacrum. The nerve passes through the sciatic foramen just below the Piriformis muscle (rotates the thigh laterally), to the back of the extension of the hip and to the lower part of the Gluteus Maximus (muscle in the buttock, thigh extension). The sciatic nerve then runs vertically downward into the back of the thigh, behind the knee branching into the hamstring muscles (calf) and further downward to the feet.

Usually sciatica affects one side of the body. The pain may be dull, sharp, burning, or accompanied by intermittent shocks of shooting pain beginning in the buttock traveling downward into the back or side of the thigh and/or leg. Sciatica then extends below the knee and may be felt in the feet. Sometimes symptoms include tingling and numbness. Sitting and trying to stand up may be painful and difficult. Coughing and sneezing can intensify the pain.

A couple of years ago I completed studies as an esthetician (skin care specialist) to incorporate skin care and aromatherapy with my chiropractic and muscle therapy practice. As a result, "my" people will benefit by integrated therapy inside and out, spiritually as well as physically which has to influence their mental energy.
BTW...as you probably can tell by now, I LOVE MYJOB!
Now, let's talk Chiropractic; techniques vary widely. Some doctors adjust all joints, some only the top cervical (neck) vertebrae. Some chiropractors make "popping" or "cracking" noises and some don't.
State laws vary, too. In Pennsylvania a chiropractor must have an "Adjunctive Therapy" license to use heat packs, electrotherapy and other physical therapy modalities. Some states allow minor surgery and delivering babies.
Most important, Chiropractic is not a "bone thang"; Chiropractic doctors are concerned with the nervous system, not bones.
When bones that form joints are subluxated, a problem with nearby nerves might arise because nerve impulses are being compromised or closed off.
Studies have also shown that cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid that feeds our brains and carries off debris) flows better after chiropractic adjustments.

This happens most commonly when the shock absorbing discs between the vertebrae in the spinal column bulge out into the space where the sciatic nerve starts. In some cases, sciatic pain comes infrequently and lasts only a few days (caused by a temporary bulging of the disc because of muscle spasms or sitting in an awkward position). In other cases, when the disc has been permanently damaged, the sciatic pain will become chronic (lasting form longer periods of time and return over and over again) unless surgery is done to repair the bulging disc. Some men are bothered by sciatic pain that is caused by sitting on their wallet if they carry it in their back pocket. While it is much less likely, pressure on the sciatic nerve can also be caused by a blood clot, a tumor or an abscess. When sciatic pain is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve in the lower spine, it is often made worse by bending, straining, coughing or sneezing. The lower part of the back may also feel stiff, lose its inward curve and the muscles along each side of the spine may go into painful spasm.

http://www.backtalksystems.com/05d.html
THE LARGEST NERVES OF THE BODY
  • Each of the two sciatic nerves is formed by four or five nerves branching off the spinal cord and running down the back of each leg.
  • Sciatica is a severe pain in the leg caused from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.
AN ALL-TOO-COMMON HEALTH COMPLAINT The sciatic nerves are the largest and longest nerves of the body, reaching about the size of your thumb in diameter and running down the back of each leg. When these nerves are irritated or affected by the inflammation of nearby soft tissues, doctors refer to this as sciatica. One of the most common causes of sciatic leg pain is the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. It can be accompanied by the bulging or herniation of the soft pulpy discs which separate each spinal bone. This can irritate or put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spinal cord. The result can be an intense pain shooting down either or both legs. In the past, treatment has involved pain medications, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, and even surgery. The chiropractic approach is to use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the interference from spinal structures. These chiropractic "adjustments" can be quite effective in reducing nerve irritation and its associated pain. Sciatica, like other health problems that can be traced to the spine, often responds dramatically to the restoration of normal spinal function through chiropractic care.

VASCULAR CLAUDICATION Sciatica is not actually a diagnosis or a disorder, it is a symptom complex. Sciatica refers to shooting pain down one or both legs. To classically fit the description of sciatica, the pain should be in the distribution of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is made up of the L4, L5, and S1 nerve roots most importantly, as well as the S2 and S3 nerve roots. All of these nerve roots come directly off the end of the spinal cord. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and travels through the sciatic notch, a hole for many structures including this nerve. The notch can be felt in the posterior (back of the) buttocks region. The nerve travels through the sciatic notch, down the back of the thigh, and splits into its divisions to travel down the outside of the leg and back of the leg into the foot.

Definition:
Sciatica is a pain in the butt, literally. Caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve, this pain can radiate down the back of the leg and all the way to the foot. It feels like burning, pins and needles or an electrical sensation. It has many causes, including tight hamstrings, tight buttocks, biomechanical problems, leg-length discrepancy, back sprain or a herniated disk.
Do not ice, but do take anti-inflammatories. Lots of muscles will get tightstretch the back, buttocks, hamstrings, iliotibial band, gluteal muscles and calf. Consider cross-training, and when the pain diminishes, try a walk/run. Sitting can aggravate sciatica. Make sure your sitting posture is good (especially in the car) and use pillows if needed to adjust your back and buttocks into a more comfortable position.
Sciatica is secondary to an underlying problem. A leg-length discrepancy is often the culprit. If home treatments don't relieve the pain or if your condition gets worse, see a sports-oriented doctor. (Nervy note: Don't ignore sciatica pain. It'll follow you to your grave if you don't deal with it!)

Key Diagnostic Points:
  • Sciatica refers to pain in the passage and distribution region of the sciatica nerve.
  • It's main manifestation is radiating pain in the lower back and legs. It usually radiates from the lumbar region on just one side from the lumbar region or buttock to the posterior side of the thigh, popliteal fossa, lateral side of the leg and lateral side of the dorsum of the foot.
  • Most sciatica is due to prolapse of a lumbar intervertebral disc.
    Differential Diagnosis:
    Wind-cold-damp.
As a Bi syndrome, it is fixed, severe and cold pain in the lumbar region and legs. Movement is limited when bending forward and backward as well as turning. It is aggravated on cloudy, rainy and cold days. Tongue: White, greasy coat
Pulse: Wiry and floating Kidney Jing Defeciency.
Lingering soreness and weakness of the loins and knees, lassitude and listlessness. Tongue: Pale with white coating.
Pulse: Deep, thin, weak pulse. Blood stasis obstructing the collaterals.
Severe fixed prickling pain in the lumbar region and leg, aversion to pressure. Tongue: Dark purplish, sometimes with purple spots.

Yes, although low back pain often comes with it.
Usually, sciatica affects only one side and pain often radiates down the buttock or leg.
It can range from a tingling, burning, pins-and-needles feeling to excruciating, shooting pain that makes standing up nearly impossible. Coughing, sneezing, and sitting make the pain worse.

    Sciatica Question:
Hi. I'm not sure if I do have sciatica or not, but I do have a real problem with leg pain, in my right leg. Here is the info you request from the page I found on the Internet. I am 28 years old. When I am walking, or standing for too long, or happen to twist or stand a certain way, I get a sharp electric-like pain all through my right leg from the buttock and down mostly through the back of my leg.
Sitting usually helps and taking Tylenol Extra Strength or Advil. When the pain strikes it makes me bend at the knee and it is very painful to stand or walk on my leg. I really noticed when I was pregnant (3 times) that during the end of my term I couldn't walk.
The doctor told me it was a pinched nerve in my back from all the weight of the baby and when I delivered, the pain will go away within the next 6 months. Well, it did go away, but during last year the similar pain was coming back. My mom is the one who said I have sciatica, but she is just my mother, a hairdresser...so I am doing my own search on the net.
Yes, I have gone to my family doctor and he said it could be one of four things (which I don't remember, he used fancy medical terms and the only one I understood was arthritis). He told me to wait till the condition lasted a week and come back so he can see me at my worst...something didn't sound right there either!?
