This is why good food and drinking water hygiene are imperative. The bacteria settle in the large intestine, where they cause the characteristic complaints. After an acute initial phase with fever and violent watery diarrhea there follows a long-term illness with bloody diarrhea, which can be accompanied by severe pains.
