S leep Disorders: Snoring and Sleep Apnea: Snoring Snoring is an age-old problem with social consequences, including marital discord. Snoring occurs due to vibration of the tissue in the throat, usually while the patient is breathing through the mouth. Although in itself snoring is not necessarily dangerous, it may be a symptom of sleep apnea a condition which can be very dangerous. Until now, the treatment for snoring has included such techniques as behavioral modification, weight loss, dental devices, nasal strips, drugs, and major surgery. But now, the cure for snoring and many cases of sleep apnea is a simple office procedure. Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is usually obstructive; that is, the breathing passage is blocked between the nose and the voice box. If sleep apnea is severe enough, the oxygen in the bloodstream which is reaching the brain and other vital organs may fall to dangerous levels. The site(s) or point(s) of obstruction must be diagnosed before treatment can begin. Once this is determined, treatment is targeted on relieving the obstruction. Possible Sites of Obstruction Treatment options for snoring and sleep apnea include: Weight reduction Avoidance of alcoholic beverages before retiring Nasal CPAP, in which an appliance forces oxygen at positive pressure into the patient's airway during sleep

For immediate release: January 31, 2003
For more information, contact George Stamatis, 216-368-3635 or gxs18@po.cwru.edu Their data has identified genes that may help uncover which individuals are predisposed to snoring and provide further evidence that obesity is a major genetic contributor to the condition. These findings will be published in the February 2003 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics. "By taking our research to the most basic, genetic level, we were able to examine how sleep apnea and obesity may be linked," said lead author Lyle Palmer, of BWH. "We discovered that there may be a common causal pathway in which several genes work in tandem, elevating risk for both conditions."

Sleep Apnea What is sleep apnea?
People with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night! If you have sleep apnea, the periods of not breathing may make you wake up from deep sleep. If you are waking up all night long, you aren't getting enough rest from your sleep. There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive apnea and central apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnea have this type of apnea. If you have this type, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. You keep trying to breathe, but you can't get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of fatty tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles. Central sleep apnea is rare. This type is called central apnea because it is related to the function of the central nervous system. If you have this type of apnea, the muscles you use to breathe don't get the "go-ahead" signal from your brain. Either the brain doesn't send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.

http://www.sleepneverfeltsogood.com About Us About Sleep Disorders Do I Have a Sleep Disorder? FAQ About Sleep ... Home About Sleep Disorders It is estimated that 30 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders. The Importance of Sleep
Getting the right amount of good quality sleep is important to physical and mental health, and to optimal daily functioning. Not getting enough sleep, or poor sleep due to a sleep disorder, can rob one's energy, reduce mental sharpness, and increase the risk of accidents while driving, or on the job. What is a Sleep Disorder?
More than 80 sleep disorders have been identified. The range of these disorders is varied and wide. It is estimated that 30 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, while 40 million more suffer from intermittent sleep problems. Those affected have problems ranging from not being able to sleep, to being too sleepy during waking times. Most individuals need 7-8 hours of sleep per night to function optimally, though some people will need less, and others more than that amount. When what seems like a sufficient amount of sleep does not result in one being refreshed, or sleepiness remains, a sleep disorder may be present.
    Snoring:
It is estimated that 60% of middle aged men, and 40% of middle aged women snore. The sound of snoring is produced by the vibration of soft tissues of the upper airway during sleep. The intensity of snoring may vary due to upper airway anatomy, position in bed, stage of sleep, degree of nasal obstruction, and ingestion of sedatives, or alcohol before sleep. Smoking may contribute to louder snoring. Though mild snoring is not typically associated with serious health effects, loud snoring can be associated with obstructive sleep apnea which can have adverse health effects. Treatment for snoring ranges from simple measures such as avoidance of alcohol or sedatives before sleep, to positioning in bed (generally off one's back), to upper airway procedures aimed at reducing the volume, and vibration of the tissues, or relieving nasal obstruction.

BRINGING SECRETS OF THE NIGHT TO THE LIGHT OF DAY... Understanding the symptoms of sleep disorders. SLEEP APNEA, SNORING AND BREATHING PROBLEMS IN SLEEP What is sleep apnea -Repeated pauses in breathing (apneas) lasting at least 10 seconds. In severe cases, hundreds of breathing pauses can occur every night. -Can result either from collapse of throat (causing loud or irregular snores and/or gasps or from lack of breathing effort. Is regular snoring without apneas OK -Not necessarily. Some patients must struggle so violently to get every breath that the resulting dramatic swings in pressure within their chest can even cause collapse of the left side of their heart! -This condition (called UPPER AIRWAY RESISTANCE SYNDROME ) can cause severe sleepiness and may eventually lead to full-blown sleep apnea. What else can go wrong with breathing during sleep -Some people who are quite overweight, who have lung or heart problems, or who have medical problems that make them breathe too shallowly may have repeated serious drops in their oxygen levels during sleep. -Such failure to generate adequate breathing effort can occur without snoring, breathing pauses or any symptoms...even if it is severe to the point of causing progressive heart damage from lack of oxygen in the blood.
