Dear Sir, My Partner recently had surgery to remove two slipped disks. At first he seemed to recover quickly, whilst their was some bruising he was already walking and perching at the end of the bed. He was therefore discharged from the hospital after about 4 or 5 days. The day after he started to complain of pain on the right hand lower back and after 2 or 3 days was readmitted to the hospital. He is now suffering from chronic spasms in the lower back region and is almost bed ridden as the pain is so intense. He has had a weekening in his legs and occasionally his arms spasm as well, although this is not as severe. He is currentl on Pathedone (spelling?) and has had electopathy for the inflamation, but rather than his condition improving it has steadily deterioated. I was surfing the net and have come accross articles on Myelitis - could this have anything to do with his current condition? Can you please advise me. Next Article

Herniated nucleus pulposus (slipped disk)
Causes and Risks:
The spinal vertebrae are separated by cartilage disks, filled with a gelatinous substance, that provide cushioning to the spinal column. These disks may herniate or rupture from trauma or strain , especially if degenerative changes have occurred in the disk.
Radiculopathy refers to any disease condition of the spinal nerve roots. The term "lumbar radiculopathy" means that the lower back nerves are involved; "cervical radiculopathy" means that the neck nerves are involved. Herniated disk is one cause (but not the only cause) of radiculopathy.
Most herniation takes place in the lumbar area of the spine. Lumbar disk herniation occurs 15 times more often than cervical (neck) disk herniation, and it is one of the most common causes of lower back pain . The cervical disks are affected 8% of the time and the upper-to-mid-back (thoracic) disks only 1 to 2% of the time.
Nerve roots (large nerves that branch out from the spinal cord) may become compressed resulting in neurological symptoms such as sensory or motor changes.

Definition
A ruptured disk in the back occurs when all or part of a vertebral disk is forced through the bones of the spinal column.
What is going on in the body?
The vertebrae of the spinal column are separated by vertebral disks that act like shock absorbers. A disk is made up of two parts. The outer ring or annulus is a tough, fibrous material. The inner part or nucleus is a soft, jelly-like material. A ruptured disk occurs when the outer ring tears or breaks, allowing the jelly-like material to poke through the crack. The disk may press on nerves, causing pain and loss of function.
What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?
The location of the ruptured disk determines where a person will have symptoms. Most ruptured disks are in the lower back and cause low back pain. The ruptured disk may press on the sciatic nerve. This pressure causes sciatic nerve dysfunction . The person may experience the following symptoms:
  • decreased ability to flex the knee decreased ability to move the foot and toes in certain directions numbness, burning, or tingling in the leg

LOW BACK PAIN
Tips on pain relief and prevention
What makes up the spine? The lower spine consists of five bones, called the lumbar vertebrae. The vertebrae support the body and protect the spinal core and nerves. Between each vertebra is a disk filled with a jelly-like material. The disks act as shock absorbers for the vertebrae. Along the spine are many nerves. Injury to these nerves can cause pain. What can cause low back injuries? Many things can cause low back injuries - muscle strain or spasm, sprains of ligaments (which attach bone to bone), joint problems or a "slipped disk." The most common cause of low back pain is using your back muscles in activities you’re not used to, like lifting heavy furniture, playing basketball or doing yard work. A slipped disk happens when the disk between the bones bulges and presses on nerves. This is often caused by twisting while lifting. But many people won’t know what caused their slipped disk. Back pain can also follow normal activities such as bending over the sink to brush your teeth. Back pain may be made worse by stress, long periods of inactivity or being in an unusual position for a long time.

Do I have a Slipped Disk?
Discs are known as the "shock absorbers" of the spine and are made up of a fibrous outer ring and a jelly-like center. Commonly, a variety of disc problems throughout the spine may be referred to as a "slipped disc." A disc cannot actually slip because of the way it attaches into the bones above and below. Discs can tear, decay, bulge, or dehydrate, all of which can be serious problems. However, discs cannot slip.

LOW BACK PAIN: FACTS and FICTION by Howard Liss, MD and Donald Liss, MD
Sit-ups may be bad for low back pain, but being overweight does not cause a slipped disk, and it does not seem to matter what kind of shoes you wear. These facts are among the many interesting results of the ongoing investigation about causes and treatment of low back pain syndromes. Afflicting 80 percent of the American population at some point in their lives, costing billions of dollars in days lost from work and medical bills and procedures, low back pain is a major epidemic in modern society. Although only 4 percent of those with acute attacks will go on to develop chronic pain, the cost for disability, compensation costs and the psychological toll is staggering. Research over the past decade has dispelled old theories and myths and, although this condition is far from being well understood, a variety of helpful facts and tools have emerged. First, low back pain is not only one disease or condition. As doctors proficient in specific diagnosis emerge, treatments are likely to be more specific and therefore more effective. The most disabling, and the condition best popularized, is that of the "slipped disk". This condition is sometimes called "sciatica" because of its propensity to irritate nerve fibers along the course of the sciatica nerve in the back of the thigh. When severe, this condition may cause pins and needles, numbness or actual muscular weakness in the leg.

: My husband has been diagnosed with a slipped disk. I wasn't with him at the doctor's office and am getting very sketchy details from him. How serious is this and what are the options for treatment? How long will he be out of work? I know if it ruptures he could be paralyzed, would it be permanent? Can a Chiropractor help? I'm really scared for him, when he got out of bed this morning his leg would not support him and he fell. Can you ease some of my concerns? Thank you. Hazel Dinger Dear Hazel: Treatments other than rest and early activity as tolerated include physical therapy, back exercises, traction and chiropractic manipulation; no treatment has proven efficacy, and some (such as chiropractic manipulation) may occasionally be dangerous if wrongly used.

General Illness Information
Medical Term:

Disk, Ruptured Common Name: Herniated disk, Slipped Disk Description: A herniated disk is a spinal disk which has collapsed and is bulging into the spinal cord, pressing on the spinal cord or the nerves emanating from it. This occurs as a result of degeneration of the ligaments and tissues surrounding a spinal disk (i.e.. the cushion separating bony spinal vertebrae). The disks of the lower back (lumbar) or neck (cervical) are the most common sites. 80% of cases of lumbar disk protrusion occur at the L5-S1 level. In the neck the commonest site affected is at the C6-C7 level. When it affects the cervical spine, it is called cervical spondylosis. This condition usually affects middle-aged and older adults. Causes: Degeneration of ligaments with or without back injury (acute or chronic) leads to slipped disk. Prevention: Prevent back injury by p racticing proper posture when lifting. Also, exercise regularly to maintain good muscle tone.

1.Severe Migaine Headaches It is probably correct to assume that migraine headaches are due to premature contacts in centric relation. Dynamic premature contacts which arise due to the extrusion of maxillary third molars following extraction of the mandibular third molars are the most common cause of particularly severe symptoms.
Figure 2 Typical occlusion associated
with migraine headaches (psaliododontia). In this case the headaches were bilateral. A woman restaurant owner came to this office with a fractured right maxillary central incisor. Observing extrusion and strong facets on the mesial surface of the right maxillary third molar, I guessed that the patient had migraine headaches on the right side. She reported having migraine headaches for more than twenty years which had become so bad recently that she was bedridden for two days each week. Although she had a complete physical examination twice per year and had the origin of this probrem investigated, she was told that it was probably due to high blood pressure. Following extraction of the right maxillary third molar, the right migraine headaches have not occured once in seven years.
