EFFEXOR® XR approved for the treatment of social anxiety disorder
First SNRI proven effective in treatment of this disabling condition
Madison, NJ, February 11, 2003 Wyeth (NYSE:WYE) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved EFFEXOR (R) XR (venlafaxine HCl) for the treatment of patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), which may affect up to 13 percent of Americans at some point in their lives. EFFEXOR XR, already approved for the treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), is the first available serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), and is believed to increase the levels of two key brain chemicals thought to be deficient in individuals suffering from depression and anxiety disorders. EFFEXOR XR is the only SNRI approved for use in this broad range of mood disorders. The FDA approved EFFEXOR XR as treatment for SAD based on studies that demonstrate the drug's significant effectiveness as a short-term treatment for patients with SAD. "Social anxiety disorder is a debilitating illness that can greatly disrupt an individual's daily life, yet the disorder is widely undertreated," says Michael R. Liebowitz, M.D., professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and lead investigator of one of the two pivotal EFFEXOR® XR SAD studies. "Now that EFFEXOR XR is available for SAD, we have a different kind of treatment option to help alleviate the disabling symptoms of this illness."

WHAT IS SOCIAL PHOBIA? Social phobia, also known as social anxiety, is a common anxiety disorder characterized by fear and avoidance of various social situations. In many respects, social phobia resembles an extreme form of shyness. Unlike shyness, however, social phobia interferes significantly with an individual's functioning. People with social phobia often become anxious in and avoid social situations such as speaking in public, meeting new people, or dating. Not all people with social phobia fear or avoid all social situations; the specific situations vary from person to person. Although it often goes unrecognized, social phobia is one of the most common types of psychological problems. Recent studies indicate that up to 13% of Americans will experience clinically significant social phobia at some time during their lives.

Anxiety Disorders
Most people experience a certain amount of anxiety and fear in their lifetimes. It is a normal part of living. For millions of Americans, however, anxieties and fear are persistent and overwhelming, and can interfere with daily life. These people suffer from anxiety disorders, a group of five psychiatric disorders that can be terrifying and crippling, but are treatable. Experts believe that anxiety disorders are caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors, much like physical disorders such as heart disease or diabetes. Anxiety disorders are real, serious, and treatable. Fortunately, the vast majority of people with an anxiety disorder can be helped with the right professional care. Alone or in combination, psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medication therapy are effective treatments. There are no guarantees, and success and treatment rates vary with the individual. One reason for this is that individuals can have more than one disorder, which might prolong treatment. Also, patients with an anxiety disorder sometimes suffer from clinical depression and substance abuse. The five anxiety disorders are identified as: Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Phobias (including Social Phobia, also called Social Anxiety Disorder). A panic attack is a sudden rush of uncomfortable physical symptoms coupled with thoughts of impending doom (making a scene, heart attack, not being able to breathe). Fear of Flying: I had the opportunity to design American Airlines' first national program for the fearful flier. This self-help site is based on that successful seminar and on my years of experience working with people desiring to fly comfortably again. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Obsessions are repetitive, unproductive thoughts that generate anxiety. Compulsions are repetitious rituals used to relieve that anxiety. Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A person who suffers from generalized anxiety tends to worry about big and little issues and feels uncomfortable physical symptoms throughout most of the day.

People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school, and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation. Physical symptoms often accompany the intense anxiety of social phobia and include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, nausea, and difficulty talking. Fortunately, both medication and psychotherapy can help people with social phobia. Researchers continue to investigate the underlying causes of this and other anxiety disorders with the aim of developing new treatments.

When is a child's behavior just mild shyness that will fade with time and experience and when is a child in need of some additional help? These are difficult questions to answer since there are no precise tests to measure shyness and no way to look into the future to see how a child will grow and develop. Shykids.com is staffed by people who have had first hand experience being shy and raising shy children. While our background is not in psychiatry, we can tell you that we have seen many children who were painfully shy and unwilling to talk to anyone unfamiliar when they were pre-schoolers who grew up to be socially active and comfortable in group settings. We have also seen children who did not overcome their shyness and suffered through painful teen years and young adulthood. The decision on how to help your child is yours alone to make. We believe that there is much you can do right in your own home and with the cooperation of teachers in school to help your shy child or teen. There are times, however, when outside help is needed. We've provided the following links to provide you with more information about social anxieties. Selective Mutism.org

    http://www.bu.edu/anxiety/socphob.html
Social phobia is an intense fear of becoming humiliated in social situations, specifically of embarrassing yourself in front of other people. It often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcoholism. Social phobia often begins around early adolescence or even younger. If you suffer from social phobia, you tend to think that other people are very competent in public and that you are not. Small mistakes you make may seem to you much more exaggerated than they really are. Blushing itself may seem painfully embarrassing, and you feel as though all eyes are focused on you. You may be afraid of being with people other than those closest to you. Or your fear may be more specific, such as feeling anxious about giving a speech, talking to a boss or other authority figure, or dating. The most common social phobia is a fear of public speaking. Sometimes social phobia involves a general fear of social situations such as parties. More rarely it may involve a fear of using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone, or writing in the presence of other people, such as when signing a check. Although this disorder is often thought of as shyness, the two are not the same. Shy people can be very uneasy around others, but they don't experience the extreme anxiety in anticipating a social situation, and they don't necessarily avoid circumstances that make them feel self-conscious. In contrast, people with social phobia aren't necessarily shy at all. They can be completely at ease with people most of the time, but particular situations, such as walking down an aisle in public or making a speech, can give them intense anxiety. Social phobia disrupts normal life, interfering with career or social relationships. For example, a worker can turn down a job promotion because he can't give public presentations. The dread of a social event can begin weeks in advance, and symptoms can be quite debilitating.
