All are characterized by somatic complaints without physical basis. In contrast to malingering and other forms of faking, for these persons the illnesses, pains, and physical complaints are believed rather than feigned. Somatization Disorder Somatization Disorder (Briquet's) was originally described by Briquet. Person with this disorder present with multiple complaints of physical ailments over a long period. These begin before age 30, are inadequately explained by independent physical findings and that lead to medical treatment or significant life impairment. The complaints are are typically dramatic and significant; hence, they often lead to major medical intervention, such as surgeries. When performed these interventions tend to lead to a conclusion that no physical basis can be found. When doctors refuse treatment these person tend to "doctor shop" until they find someone new who will listen to their complaints. Diagnosis requires reporting of symptoms in four categories: Pain Gastrointestinal Sexual Pseudoneurological Caution should be used in assuming that no physical basis underlies complaints for these persons. Follow-up studies have shown that for a significant number of Briquet's patients some basis for a portion of their complaints may later be found.

Lantz, MD Case Presentation Discussion Somatization disorder is one of the most poorly understood psychiatric disorders, but it is very common in primary care settings. Patients with this disorder are among the most frustrating for providers because they are high utilizers of medical services, diagnostic tests, and procedures, with typically no conclusive diagnosis or identifiable physical cause of their symptoms. Somatization disorder is one of a group of somatoform disorders that also includes hypochondriasis, conversion disorder, and psychogenic pain disorder. Early terms for the condition include hysteria and Briquet’s syndrome, named for the 19th-century French physician who published detailed reports of hundreds of cases, almost exclusively women, who suffered from multiple physical symptoms with no explainable medical diagnosis. In patients with somatization disorder, symptoms often begin in young adulthood, before the age of 30, and persist for decades into late life.

Courtesy of Bayda Ludwar Law Firm SOMATOFORM DISORDER: FROM A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE Somatoform Disorders are a broad category of psychological disorders which are characterized by diverse physical complaints with no detectable organic causes. Somatization Disorder, a specific type of Somatoform Disorder. Somatization Disorder is a specific psychological disorder that begins before age 30, and is characterized by a combination of pain, gastrointestinal, sexual and pseudoneurological complaints. The diagnostic criteria for Somatization Disorder is quite rigid. There are four requirements that need to be met. To make the diagnosis, the American Psychiatric Association's current manual (DSM - IV) first requirement is the presence of at least four physical symptoms that would normally be suggestive of a general medical condition. The individual must suffer from at least four types of pain (headaches, joint pain, lower back pain), two gastrointestinal symptoms (as nausea, diarrhea or food intolerance), one sexual symptom (sexual indifference), and one pseudoneurological symptom (such as impaired coordination, paralysis or weakness). The second diagnostic requirement is that there must be a history of physical complaints that begin prior to age 30 and last over several years. The individual must have sought medical or health related treatment for these complaints and as a result of their physical conditions there has been an impairment in the individual's social or occupational functioning.
