    Abnormal Curvature of the Spine
Poor posture, a congenital abnormality, injury, infection, and other diseases, such as cerebral palsy, can cause abnormal curvature of the spine. The most common kinds of abnormal curvature are lordosis, flat back, kyphosis and scoliosis. All these disorders can be treated with therapy, exercise, and, in some cases, surgery. Normal Spine Lordosis Flat back Kyphosis Scoliosis Lordosis , the inward curvature of the spine, is normal to a slight degree in the neck and lower back, but it can become exaggerated by poor posture or by kyphosis. Excessive lordosis in the lower back often occurs in someone who is overweight and has weak abdominal muscles. Once excessive lordosis has developed, it can become a permanent condition and may contribute to the development of osteoarthritis of the spine. Flat back , the absence of normal spinal curves, is the result of abnormal development in infancy or injury.

MicroSpine manufactures and develops new techniques and equipment to perform the most complex microscopic spinal surgeries through portals of 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch. The science of spine surgery is ever changing and MicroSpine is the one changing it. Unlike others, we don't claim to perform minimally invasive spinal surgery (Microspinoscopy) and then offer you a major fusion. All of our spinal surgeries are minimally invasive and no one has more advanced spinal surgical techniques than us. Our minimally invasive spine surgery techniques are so advanced that patients who have failed "minimally invasive spine surgery" from other professionals come to us for successful treatment. We are spinal specialists and nothing else. Unlike other spine centers who claim to perform minimally invasive spine surgery but also operate on shoulders and knees, we only work on the spine and we are the only center strictly dedicated to every aspect of minimally invasive spine surgery in the World. MicroSpine is the only spine center in the World who performs endoscopic spinal hardware removal or cervical arthritis surgery. No one else has treatment options as advanced as we do. We specialize in "Incurable" back pain, leg pain, cervical pain, failed back syndrome, failed spine surgery syndrome, headache, spinal stenosis, radiculopathy, spondylolisthesis, and disc herniation. We even solve pain due to prior surgeries and fusions! You don't need a 6 to 12 inch incision, and you probably don't need a fusion to cure your pain.

This book draws together recent results and ideas from most of the leading UK researchers into back pain. The emphasis is on disorders of the lumbar spine, their pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. This is in contrast to most books on the spine which either concentrate on the normal spine or deal with a specialised approach such as surgery. By drawing together contributions from a wide range of clinical and scientific backgrounds, including alternative therapies such as osteopathy and chiropractice, the problem of low back pain is shown to be complex and multifactorial.
    Contents:
    • The Curved, Flexible Spine and the Functions of Ligaments and Muscles (R M Aspden)
    • Biomechanics of the Intervertebral Disc — Disc Pressure Measurements and Significance (D S McNally)
    • Growth and Development of the Lumbar Vertebral Canal (R W Porter)
    • Measurement of Vertebral Blood Flow and Its Significance in Disc Disease (A M C Thomas et al.)

This is a companion to Volume 1 with the same title and a similar approach: namely to draw together current understanding of the multifactorial nature of back pain. Both volumes together contain chapters contributed by most of the leading researchers into back pain in the UK and as such they constitute an unparalleled resource. Rather than concentrating on specialist areas such as surgery or the lumbar spine, the emphasis is on understanding the function and failure of the spine and its component tissues. As such it contains material which is applicable to anyone with an interest in any aspect of the spine; from biomechanics to blood flow, epidemiology to economics, nerves to nutrition and everything else in between.
    Contents:
    • Epidemiology of Low Back Pain: The British Contribution (P R Croft)
    • Pain Sources in the Lumbar Spine (R C Mulholland)
    • Characterisation of the Innervation to the Intervertebral Discs and Associated Ligaments (P W McCarthy)

The surgeons at the Spine Institute receive patients from all over the world, many with one common denominator: they have been diagnosed with scoliosis. Working on the Norton Hospital Leatherman Spine Center team, the surgeons at the Spine Institute partner with other pediatric specialists in managing scoliosis patients. For example, if the scoliosis has compressed the spinal cord, a neurological surgeon becomes part of the treatment team. If the condition affects the heart or lungs, a cardiac or pulmonary specialist becomes involved as well. An overview of scoliosis.
The most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic - meaning its cause is unknown. Idiopathic scoliosis is three times more common in girls than in boys, and generally occurs at the start of a child's second growth spurt, usually between the ages of 10 and 13. "Some children may develop a slight curvature that remains stationary," says John R. Johnson, M.D., a surgeon at the Spine Institute. "Others may progress, but not become severe. And some may become severe enough to require brace treatment or surgery." According to Dr. Johnson, a spinal curvature of 40 to 50 degrees can cause significant cosmetic problems and, compared with a normal curve, is about twice as likely to cause back pain. About 95 percent of the curvatures seen in children at the Spine Institute are in the 40 to 70 degree range. "Those curves stand about a 60 to 70 percent chance of getting progressively worse, even during adulthood," Dr. Johnson says.

It will focus on advances in diagnostics as well as medical and surgical management. New procedures such as minimally invasive surgery, intradiscal electrothermy, acupuncture, bracing, and vertebroplasty will be profiled. In addition to acute treatment, this course will also address the importance of longitudinal care, including rehabilitation. This course is designed for physicians practicing in the areas of neurosurgery, orthopaedics, physical medicine, rehabilitation, primary care and pain management, as well as physical therapists, physician assistants, orthotists and nurses. In addition to the lecture material, participants will have the opportunity to choose among break-out sessions, which will allow additional focus in areas of interest. Objectives Program Speakers Registration ... CME Credit Objectives Participants will have an opportunity to gain and expand their knowledge regarding comprehensive management of lumbar spine disorders.
