This condition is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, scanty or absent menses , multiple small cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovaries), mild hirsutism, and infertility . Many women who have this condition also have diabetes with insulin resistance. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Abnormal ovarian function sometimes causes incompletely developed follicles (ova) to accumulate in the ovaries. These ova fail to mature and ovulate, therefore causing them to accumulate as cysts in the ovary and contributing to infertility in the woman.

You Are Not Alone! Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex endocrine disturbance found in 5 - 30% of the world's female population. First diagnosed in 1935 as Stein - Levinthal Syndrome, it is one of the most common causes of
infertility, and yet it still is misdiagnosed in most cases.
The symptoms of PCOS vary within each individual, but common complaints include: irregular menstrual periods, male pattern baldness, obesity or unexplained weight gain, excessive facial and/or body hair, insulin resistance and infertility. Women who have PCOS have an increased risk of adult onset diabetes, hypertension, early onset heart disease, cancers of the reproductive organs, and a higher chance of miscarriage and infertility. Though there is currently no cure for this disorder, it can be controlled to an extent with certain medications and a proper diet.
I want to add my name to the list of "cysters" out there on the web, those who know what they are dealing with, and those who are just now discovering what their bodies have been telling them all along. Just knowing that what I am facing has been dealt with for decades, gives me the strength and courage to make it through another day. Thank you all! We are angels with but one wing, and to fly we must embrace each other.

Background: In polycystic ovary disease, enlarged ovaries with thickened sclerotic capsules and an abnormally high number of follicles are present. The follicles may concurrently exist in varying states of growth, maturation, or atresia. Although a multiplicity of clinical presentations exists, Stein and Leventhal reported the classic symptomatology in 1935. They described a group of women with amenorrhea, infertility, hirsutism, and enlarged polycystic ovaries. The authors found that, after ovarian biopsy, the women began to menstruate regularly. As was discovered over time, women may have polycystic ovaries, yet their cases may not conform to all of the original criteria. Therefore, Stein-Leventhal syndrome became a subgroup of a more encompassing disease called polycystic ovary disease. As more information regarding the nature of the condition has come to light, other terms have been applied, including polycystic ovaries syndrome and polyfollicular ovarian disease. In actuality, polycystic ovaries are not the primary cause of amenorrhea or hirsutism in this condition. They are simply one sign of an underlying endocrinologic disorder that ultimately results in anovulation.

I don't know why I am, but I am. PCOS. I'm a nurse and I hadn't even heard of PCOS before. Before I diagnosed myself with it, that is. It started with my diagnosis of hidradenitis (HS) In my search for treatment of HS, I kept seeing references to PCOS. PCOS became my new research project. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read symmtom after symptom describing me! Wow. With all my info in hand, I marched into the doctor's office and told him I suspected that I had PCOS. After reviewing and checking out a few things, my doc agreed with me. I guess I'm glad that I know what I have, but now there are so many more questions. I see my endocrinologist next month and I can't wait to work on "my plan" for treatment. I'm scared though. I wish I had been diagnosed earlier. I am inspired though, through a lot of things I have read and hearing others' stories. I'm going to be okay. I have to be.
