VOLUME 5, NUMBER 3 MARCH 2002 TREATMENT HIGHLIGHTS NICOTINE DEPENDENCE Adolescent perception of parental disapproval of cigarette smoking is associated with a lower likelihood of adolescent smoking. ALCOHOL USE DISORDERS Naltrexone (Depade, ReVia) at a dose of 50 mg/day is not found to be effective in the treatment of chronic, severe alcohol dependence among male veterans. STIFF-PERSON SYNDROME Intravenous immune globulin is found to be an effective treatment for stiff-person syndrome. STALKING Female stalkers are found to differ from male stalkers in their motivation for stalking and in their choice of victim. EMPLOYMENT AND THE SEVERELY MENTALLY ILL The Individual Placement and Support program is found to be effective in helping patients with severe mental illness obtain work. Job retention, however, is “problematic.” OF NOTE Youths who participate in team sports are found to have lower rates of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use, compared to youths who do not participate in team sports. Trends in the outpatient treatment of depressive disorders in the United States are found to have changed over a 10-year period. Key findings from 2 national surveys are presented.

Dr. Floeter received her M.D. and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis where she studied the anatomical connections of transplanted fetal neocortex with Ted Jones. She did her residency training in Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, where she developed an interest in neurological disorders with involuntary movements. At UCSF she did a post-doctoral fellowship with Howard Fields, studying modulation of spinal nocifensive reflexes. In 1990 she joined Bob Burke at NINDS to study spinal mechanisms of motor control, and after three years moved to the NINDS clinical program. After formal training in clinical neurophysiology in the EMG section, she began studying spinal mechanisms of motor control in humans, and how these mechanisms may become disrupted in movement disorders.

Please click here to view the full topic text: Schwartz-Jampel Syndrome
Background: Schwartz-Jampel syndrome is an autosomal recessive inherited condition manifested by a combination of muscle stiffness and mild, largely nonprogressive muscle weakness with a number of minor morphological abnormalities. In affected patients, problems with motor development frequently become evident during the first year of life. Usually the characteristic dysmorphic features lead to an early diagnosis. The first described cases of Schwartz-Jampel syndrome were reported in 1962 by Oscar Schwartz and Robert S. Jampel in the Archives of Ophthalmology in an article titled "Congenital blepharophimosis associated with a unique generalized myopathy." In this paper, the authors present the case of 2 siblings, a 6-year-old boy and a 3-and-a-half-year-old girl, who had the following clinical characteristics:
    • Congenital blepharophimosis (ie, decreased palpebral fissure with normal eyelid development)
