Detailed Information On Strep Throat
Strep throat is a bacterial infection that, if left untreated, can lead to significant problems, rheumatic fever and kidney problems. It's impossible to tell just by looking if a sore throat is strep throat. That's why a doctor will do a throat culture or strep test. Doctors have said that this week they are also seeing plenty of respiratory infections, according to Good Health reporter Lila Lazarus.

Streptococcal pharyngitis occurs most commonly from October to April, often in children 5 to 10 years old but also in adults. The infection is spread by direct person-to-person contact with nasal secretions or saliva. The organism may be present in the throat of people without causing a sore throat. This is referred to as colonization.

What is strep throat? Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection marked by swelling and extreme soreness of the back of the throat, or pharynx. It can hurt so much your child doesn't want to swallow. (The name "strep throat" is a shorthand term for the throat infection, which is caused by Group A streptococcus bacteria.) Other symptoms of strep are fever (often above 101 degrees), chills, decreased appetite, and swollen lymph glands in the neck. Children can also develop symptoms of stomach distress such as nausea and vomiting. Only about 10 percent of sore throats are strep infections: Viruses, not bacteria, cause most sore throats. A sore throat that comes with other cold symptoms like a runny nose, or which causes hoarseness or laryngitis, is probably not a streptococcal infection. How will my doctor know if it's strep?

The infection is more common in children than in adults. What are the symptoms of strep throat? Children with strep throat often have a fever and complain of sore throat, headache and stomachache. They may also have swollen, tender glands in the neck, or sores around the nose. Scarlet fever, a rare form of strep infection, is characterized by a sore throat, more general symptoms, such as fatigue, and a red rash on the body that feels like sandpaper. Some children can get very serious complications, such as rheumatic fever, and acute glomerulonephritis, if the infection is not treated completely with antibiotics. How is strep throat transmitted?

Description Strep throat is a throat infection caused by the group A ß-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria . Strep throat infections are contagious and strep bacteria commonly pass from person to person in the fluid droplets of coughs and sneezes. Streptococcus bacteria can also contaminate food, water and milk. In some cases, a strep throat infection can lead to scarlet fever, or be followed by rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis (a kidney problem). Strep throat is the most common type of throat infection caused by bacteria, and it tends to affect children between 5 and 15 years old. Despite being the most common type of throat infection caused by bacteria, strep throat only causes about 15% of all cases of sore throats with the vast majority caused by viruses Symptoms and Signs Diagnosis and Treatment Since bacteria can be treated with antibiotics while viruses can not, diagnosis will focus on determining if the sore throat is indeed strep throat and thus can be treated with antibiotics. Swabs of fluids from the back of the throat are usually taken and often an instant strep test can be done on the spot. Otherwise the swab of fluids is sent to be analysed for the presence of bacteria.

    Sore Throat
There are many different causes for sore throats. Some causes are easily treated, some require antibiotics, and some cannot be treated at all you just have to wait out the cause, although over-the-counter medicines can help relieve the pain.
Sore Throat Due to Dry Air
This is actually quite common I get them a lot myself in the winter, especially in cold weather when I forget to fill up the humidifier tanks with water. If the air is dry, your throat can dry out a bit with your breathing and become sore. Solution: drink plenty of fluids and make sure your house is humidified properly. (I have noticed that furnace humidifiers do not necessarily do a good enough job of keeping the house properly humid. Even with a furnace humidifier you may still need table-top humidifers to stay comfortable.)
Sore Throat Due to Coughs, Colds, and Runny Noses
Coughing by itself can make your throat feel sore. So can postnasal drip mucus from the nose dripping down the back of the throat. If you have a dry cough, cough suppressants some of which you can buy without a prescription can quieten the cough and cut down on throat irritation. If you are coughing because of postnasal drip, I believe you should

Group A Streptococcal (GAS) Disease Frequently Asked Questions What is group A strep tococcus (GAS)? Group A streptococcus is a bacterium often found in the throat and on the skin. People may carry group A streptococci in the throat or on the skin and have no symptoms of illness. Most GAS infections are relatively mild illnesses such as "strep throat," or impetigo. On rare occasions, these bacteria can cause other severe and even life-threatening diseases How are group A streptoc occi spread? These bacteria are spread through direct contact with mucus from the nose or throat of persons who are infected or through contact with infected wounds or sores on the skin. Ill persons, such as those who have strep throat or skin infections, are most likely to spread the infection. Persons who carry the bacteria but have no symptoms are much less contagious. Treating an infected person with an antibiotic for 24 hours or longer generally eliminates their ability to spread the bacteria. However, it is important to complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed. It is not likely that household items like plates, cups, or toys spread these bacteria.

    Strep throat
    Definition
Streptococcal sore throat , or strep throat as it is more commonly called, is an infection of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. Sometimes the tonsils are also infected ( tonsillitis ). The disease is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Untreated strep throat may develop into rheumatic fever or other serious conditions. Description
Strep throat accounts for between five and ten percent of all sore throats. Although anyone can get strep throat, it is most common in school age children. People who smoke, who are fatigued, run down, or who live in damp, crowded conditions are also more likely to become infected. Children under age two and adults who are not around children are less likely to get the disease. Strep throat occurs most frequently from November to April. The disease passes directly from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Very occasionally the disease is passed through food, when a food handler infected with strep throat accidentally contaminates food by coughing or sneezing. Statistically, if someone in the household is infected, one out of every four other household members may get strep throat within two to seven days.
A person with strep throat suddenly develops a painful sore throat one to five days after being exposed to the streptococcus bacteria. The pain is indistinguishable from sore throats caused by other diseases.

    Strep Throat
Strep throat is caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, also called group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS). This infection is most common in children over three years of age and begins with a fever, a red, swollen throat, and tonsils that can have a white coating of pus. Other symptoms often include swollen glands, decreased appetite and a decreased energy level. Related Topics Sore Throats Mononucleosis Scarlet Fever If strep throat is suspected as the cause of tonsillitis in your child, your doctor will do a throat swab to confirm that there is infection with strep bacteria. A rapid antigen test is usually performed in the office. If this test is negative, there is still a small chance that your child has strep and an overnight culture will then be done to see if any strep bacteria grow. It is important to remember that you can not tell the difference between strep throat and other viral causes of sore throats. Just because there is pus on your child's tonsils, it does not mean that he needs an antibiotic. Antibiotics are only used to treat sore throats that are caused by strep, so if the tests are negative, your child most likely has a virus that will need to clear up on its own.

    Acute Tonsillitis (Strep Throat)
The disease usually begins with high temperature and possibly chills, especially in children. The patient complains of a persistent pain in the throat, and pain radiating to the ear on swallowing. Opening the mouth is often difficult and painful, the tongue is coated, and there is a mouth odor. The patient may also complain of headache, thick speech, marked feeling of malaise, as well as swelling and tenderness of the neck glands (lymph nodes). Both tonsils and the surrounding area including the posterior pharyngeal wall are deep red and swollen. Later, whitish spots (follicles) form on the tonsils, hence the name follicular tonsillitis. There is also swelling of the neighboring organs such as the faucial pillars, the uvula, and the base of the tongue.
    Chronic Tonsillitis
Chronic tonsillitis refers to repeated attacks of acute tonsillitis.

    By Martha A. Simpson, D.O., M.B.A.
    Assistant Professor of Family Medicine
Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine A TEST, NOT SEVERITY, IS KEY TO DIAGNOSING STREP THROAT Question: My child has strep throat. Many of the kids in her school have it too. This seems to happen every year at this time. Is there a strep season? How can I keep her from getting this every winter? Should I worry about strep throat? Answer:
Strep throat is an infection caused by bacteria specifically Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes. Other kinds of sore throat or pharyngitis can be caused by many different bacteria and viruses. Because strep can have much more serious, long-term health consequences than these other types of sore throat, your doctor will want to identify the cause of any sore throat that lasts for more than a day or two.
Some complications of strep throat can be pneumonia, tonsil infection (peritonsillar abscess), meningitis and middle ear infection (otitis media). Rheumatic fever sometimes develops within weeks of a strep throat and can cause permanent damage to the heart. Another complication of strep acute post streptococcal glomerular nephritis can cause kidney damage.
That was the bad news. The good news is that strep is usually very responsive to antibiotics, and a complete cure can be expected if antibiotics are started in the first nine days of infection.

While strep throat itself is sometimes no more severe than the viral sore throat that accompanies the common cold, it can be ' followed by two more serious strep-related illnesses: Rheumatic fever
Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, a kidney disease. SYMTOMS Symptoms of strep throat include sore throat and varying degrees of tonsil swelling, with or without white pustules, usually (not always) accompanied by fever and redness. If your child complains of the above symptoms, you should contact your family physician. The most common diagnostic technique is the throat culture. Other tests are available that can provide diagnosis in a matter of minutes. Children treated for strep throat are generally presumed to be noncontagious 24 hours after antibiotic therapy has begun. PROCEDURES If you or anyone in your family has had strep throat, please remember the following: 1. Complete all medication.

Scientists Sequence Genome of Strep Throat, Scarlet Fever Bacterium Scientists have completed sequencing the genome of Streptococcus pyogenes , a bacterium that causes a wide variety of human diseases. The "rap sheet" on this organism, also known as group A streptococci or GAS, stretches long: GAS infection can lead to strep throat, scarlet fever, the skin infection impetigo, pneumonia, acute kidney inflammation, toxic shock syndrome, blood "poisoning," acute rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease, and the flesh-eating disease known as necrotizing fasciitis. "This exceptionally virulent organism is difficult to study because it infects only humans and very few animal models of group A strep diseases exist," says Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). "We need to know more about how group A strep interact with humans to cause so many different illnesses. The genetic sequence should shed light on these questions and pave the way for better treatment and prevention." "Infection with this bacterium occurs worldwide, and acute rheumatic fever is the major cause of heart disease in children of developing countries," says Fran Rubin, Ph.D., a respiratory diseases program officer at NIAID. "This is one reason why sequencing this organism is so critical." Several million cases of strep throat and impetigo occur each year in the United States. In addition, in 1999 GAS infection led to 9,400 more serious illnesses such as toxic shock syndrome or necrotizing fasciitis in the United States. These invasive diseases occur when GAS get into parts of the body where bacteria are not usually found, such as the blood and muscles.
