"I brought a little bit of everything prevention, practice and the whole bit," says Travis Parsons, health educator for the Ottawa County Health Patrol. The patrol prepares to invade the beach, to pass the word that cooking oneself under the sun can be a recipe for cancer. "(I've) got sunscreen samples and some information about how to prevent skin cancer," says another health educator. "It's important to wear sunscreen even on a cloudy day like today as the rays can penetrate right through clouds." The danger is melanoma , the most prevalent and deadly form of skin cancer. The cancer can begin developing in the teen years and then rear its ugly head years later. "If you get a severe burn in those first 18 years, you actually double the risk of skin cancer," Parsons says. "And if you actually use good protective protection those first 18 years, you reduce your risk by 78 percent." A deadly threat According to the American Cancer Society, a great deal more daylight must be shed on the dangers of baking in the sun. The ACS expects about 40,000 people to be diagnosed with malignant melanoma this year. Of those, at least 7,400 will die.
