office hours TBA Introduction to computing, the Internet, and the World Wide Web through the language of the Unix operating system. Oriented to the beginner, the course presupposes no previous acquaintance with any particular sort of computer. It covers the basic concepts of text editing and formatting, writing Web pages in basic HTML, and promotes a rigorous understanding of Unix commands and shell scripts. Views communication with a computer as a matter of learning a few simple though powerful languages. (General Education Code: T2.) There are no course requirements for this course. You do not need to be a linguistics major, a computer science major, or in fact, any major at all. What you do need is a UCSC CATS account and a desire to learn how to communicate effectively and intelligently with your computer, to get it to do what you want it to do, rather than being at the mercy of pre-set menus and shrinkwrapped corporate software. The course focuses on the particular flavor of Unix found on various machines on campus, but the problem solving techniques and underlying insights you will gain from the class can be applied to any computing environment. While this is an "introductory" course, it is

Syncope: What is Syncope?
Fainting is a sudden, temporary, loss of consciousness and muscle strength that results in falling down. Prior to fainting patients usually complain of feeling dizzy, light headed, losing balance, then start to feel their heart racing and may have cold sweating. Things then start to look dimmer and narrower like a tunnel, and then all of a sudden the person blacks out and falls down. Bystanders usually describe the patient as looking pale, or lost his color. Syncope is the medical term for fainting. Syncope is therefore a symptom, that could be caused by numerous different underlying conditions, e.g., it could result from something as simple as sight of blood to something as serious as a heart valve problem. Syncope occurs when there is a transient cessation of blood flow to the brain. Almost fainted!

Venous Pooling in the Standing Postition

Upon standing up blood pools in the lower body. This causes a decrease in the amount of blood returning to the heart, and therefore the heart does not fill with enough blood. Among all the creatures of God we were blessed with the erect standing and walking positions, however our veins take a large burden for that erect postion. For example, imagine you are walking with your dog. You are walking on your 2 feet and your dog is walking on 4 feet. As the blood is being pumped out of the left side of your heart it supplies the blood to your brain, upper body, and then it travels via your arteries down to your legs and feet to supply the muscles with oxygen and blood flow. This blood also has to return back against gravity through the veins to your heart. It now has to travel all the way from your feet back to the right side of your heart not aided by any pump other than the pumping effects of your leg muscles around your leg veins. To help your veins sustain that blood returning to the right side of your heart, your veins are equiped with numerous one-way valves that allow the blood to go only one direction towards your heart and away from the ground (against gravity).

Syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness and muscle tone caused by inadequate blood supply to the brain. Syncope is better known as fainting. Syncope accounts for 3 percent of emergency room visits and 6 percent of hospital admissions, according to the American Heart Association. What causes syncope?
The common reason behind each syncopal or fainting episode is a temporary lack of oxygen-rich (red) blood getting to the brain. However, many different problems can cause a decrease in blood flow to the brain. Types of syncope include:
  • vasovagal syncope
The most common type of syncope is called vasovagal syncope. A variety of situations stimulate the vagus nerve, which leads to a slowing of the heart rate and dilation of the body's blood vessels. With a slow heart rate and dilated blood vessels, less blood gets to the brain, and fainting occurs. Pain and emotional stress can trigger vasovagal syncope in susceptible people. This type of syncope can happen more often in some families.

Neurocardiogenic Syncope
When Does Neurocardiogenic Syncope Lead to Symptoms?
Neurocardiogenic syncope occurs in predisposed individuals in the following settings:
  • after prolonged periods of quiet upright posture (such as standing in line)
after being in a warm environment (such as in hot summer weather, a hot crowded room, a hot shower or bath)
    immediately after exercise
after emotionally stressful events (having blood drawn, being scared or anxious) some individuals get symptoms soon after eating, when blood flow has shifted to the intestinal circulation during the process of digestion
Why Does an Upright Posture Trigger Neurocardiogenic Syncope?
When a normal individual stands up, gravity causes blood to pool in the legs, and return of blood to the heart is decreased. In order to compensate for this reduction, the body releases a surge of adrenaline (epinephrine). The heart beats faster and more forcefully, thereby pumping blood more efficiently to vital organs (especially the brain).
What Symptoms Does Neurocardiogenic Syncope Cause?
