Thyroid Disorders Are Important Public Health Issues Possible bioterrorist attacks and nuclear accidents bring the topic of thyroid disorders into the spotlight E-Mail Story Print Story SPECIAL EMBARGO FOR RELEASE: 10 a.m. (ET) Thursday, January 23, 2003 Media Advisory: "The good news is that so many advances have been made in treating thyroid disorders," said Dr. Ladenson. "Treating an underactive thyroid gland is quite effective, safe, and for the most part, straight forward using hormone replacement. There are now a number of strategies for treating overactive thyroid gland, including radiation therapy, surgery and pharmaceutical interventions. Even protecting the thyroid from overexposure to radiation is fairly simple, but there are logistics and other issues that are problematic." Another class of thryoid illness, according to Dr. Ladenson, are thyroid tumors, which typically present as thyroid nodules, which either are large enough to be felt on physical examination or show up on imaging scans. "For most patients, these are not a condition that will threaten their health," Dr. Ladenson said. He added, however, that the nodules are problematic if they interfere with swallowing or breathing, are associated with over-production of thyroid hormone, or if they are cancerous, which is the case in 5 percent to 10 percent of nodules. The cause of these nodules is not understood in most cases, but they often run in families and can be the result of exposure to radiation.

Are you one in 13 million?
More than 13 million Americans have thyroid disorders and more than half of them aren't even aware of it. Are you one of them? Women are five to six times more likely to suffer from thyroid disorders and approximately one in eight women will develop a thyroid problem during her lifetime. Thyroid disorders fall into two categories: Hypothyroidism the underactive thyroidis the most common form of thyroid problems, affecting four to eight percent of the general U.S. population. UI Health Care endocrinologist Thomas O'Dorisio, M.D., says symptoms include droopy eyelids, intolerance to cold, difficulty swallowing, forgetfulness, decreased concentration, and feelings of sluggishness and fatigue. You may feel depressed and experience mood swings. Your hair may become dry and brittle, your skin may become dry and itchy, your voice may become deep and raspy, you may be constipated, and may experience muscle cramps. O'Dorisio says you may have trouble losing weight, no matter how closely or strictly you follow a diet. "Hypothyroidism is easily treated with thyroid hormone replacement therapy using levothyroxine sodium," says O'Dorisio.

    Thyroid Problems and Pregnancy
Most thyroid conditions are more common in women (Table 1). Because thyroid diseases often affect younger women, it is not unusual for them to occur right before, during, or soon after pregnancy. Therefore, it is important for women at this stage of their lives to know about the symptoms and signs of thyroid problems, and for doctors to understand how to treat them best in women around the time of pregnancy. Thyroid Conditions Affecting Women Hypothyroidism Underactive thyroid gland Hyperthyroidism Overactive thyroid gland Thyroiditis Thyroid gland inflammation Goiter Enlarged thyroid gland Thyroid nodule Lump in the thyroid gland Thyroid cancer Malignant thyroid tumor Hypothyroidism An underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism is usually caused by gland inflammation or previous treatment for an overactive thyroid condition. Symptoms of hypothyroidism (Table 2) can begin so gradually and be so vague that women may not realize that they are affected. Thyroid underactivity often occurs in younger women and can begin around the time of pregnancy, particularly in the months after a baby is born. Symptoms and Signs of Hypothyroidism Symptoms Signs Fatigue Puffy face and hands Intolerance of cold temperatures Hoarseness Constipation Weight gain Muscle aching or cramps Dry skin Decreased memory Hoarseness Heavy or absent menstrual periods Hair loss Slow heart rate Thyroid hormone deficiency can cause a variety of changes in a woman's menstrual periods: irregularity, heavy periods, or loss of periods. When hypothyroidism is severe, it can reduce a woman's chances of becoming pregnant. Checking thyroid gland function with a simple blood test is an important part of evaluating a woman who has trouble becoming pregnant. If detected, an underactive thyroid gland can be easily treated with levothyroxine medication. If thyroid blood tests are normal, however, treating an infertile woman with thyroid hormones is not helpful.

    40. Thyroid Federation International - Home Page
This is a worldwide umbrella organization. Members include most thyroid support and education groups. For Thyroid Patients section lists symptoms of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid disorders.
    http://www.thyroid-fed.org/
W elcome to the Thyroid Federation International Home Page. Through this site we plan to keep you informed of the activities of our growing organization and the development of existing and future thyroid member organizations in the world. The Thyroid Federation International first convened in Toronto at the 11th International Thyroid Congress in September 1995. The vision of a world thyroid organization to deal with the problems of thyroid disease in a global perspective was first advocated by Diana Meltzer Abramsky, C.M., B.A. who in 1980 founded the Thyroid Foundation of Canada in Kingston, Ontario Canada - the first lay thyroid organization in the world. Since then, the idea has received enthusiastic support and leadership from Dr. Lawrence C. Wood of the Thyroid Foundation of America, the Federation's first president. Starting from a base of six member organizations, the Federation has grown to include thyroid organizations in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. Our main objective is to assist all those interested to start a thyroid patient organization in their country or locale. For more information see:
