Encyclopedia Index A Home Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Index A Amnesia Definition Amnesia refers to the loss of memory. Memory loss may result from two-sided (bilateral) damage to parts of the brain vital for memory storage, processing, or recall (the limbic system, including the hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe). Description Amnesia can be a symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases; however, people whose primary symptom is memory loss (amnesiacs), typically remain lucid and retain their sense of self. They may even be aware that they suffer from a memory disorder. People who experience amnesia have been instrumental in helping brain researchers determine how the brain processes memory. Until the early 1970s, researchers viewed memory as a single entity. Memory of new experiences, motor skills, past events, and previous conditioning were grouped together in one system that relied on a specific area of the brain. If all memory were stored in the same way, it would be reasonable to deduce that damage to the specific brain area would cause complete memory loss. However, studies of amnesiacs counter that theory. Such research demonstrates that the brain has multiple systems for processing, storing, and drawing on memory. Causes and symptoms Amnesia has several root causes. Most are traceable to brain injury related to physical trauma, disease, infection, drug and alcohol abuse, or reduced blood flow to the brain (vascular insufficiency). In Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, for example, damage to the memory centers of the brain results from the use of alcohol or

Transient Global Amnesia: A Case Report Abstract Transient global amnesia is characterized by abrupt and short lasting loss of ability to recall recent events or to remember new information. A case of transient global amnesia is presented and the importance of awareness of this condition for the psychiatrist is discussed. Case Report A 67 year old lady was in apparently good health when she got up one morning. She did her normal household chores and gave breakfast to her husband. She then told her husband to fetch some things from the market. Her husband returned from the market after an hour and found her behaviour to be strange. She enquired from her husband as to why he had brought all the things from the market and denied that she had told him to bring them. She then went to the kitchen and started making breakfast for her husband. On being told by her husband that she had already prepared and given breakfast to him, she denied any knowledge of it. With the above history she was brought to our OPD the same day by her husband. The patient denied any complaints. There was no past history of seizures, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac problems or similar episodes. Psychosocial history did not bring out any environmental stress. Physical examination revealed her to be averagely built and nourished.

Amnesia After Sex: More Than A Washington Phenomenon
If President Clinton had known what a pair of Johns Hopkins doctors recently learned from two patients with a temporary form of amnesia, charges that he lied about sex might be moot. Chi Van Dang, M.D., Ph.D., and Lawrence B. Gardner, M.D., hematologists, found that bearing down hard the way some people do when they move their bowels, deliver a baby or have sexual intercourse can produce six to 12 hours of transient global amnesia the inability to form new memories. Received: October 11, 2001; accepted: October 17, 2001 Abstract Background: The etiology and pathogenesis of transient global amnesia, a clinical syndrome during which new information cannot be retained while consciousness and other higher cognitive functions are still preserved, is still unknown. Imaging studies, including MRI, diffusion weighted MRI, MR spectrocopy and single-photon emission CT (SPECT) have shown inconsistent results but were rarely combined in a single patient. Case Report: We report on a patient in whom those different imaging modalities were performed during a period of transient global amnesia. All imaging modalities demonstrated normal results.

We report on a patient with pure transient global amnesia (TGA) whose magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a small region of increased signal intensity in the right hippocampus on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). DWI was sensitive and useful for evaluating the early stage of TGA and might help to explain the pathophysiology of TGA. Keywords. In Colombia (South America) during recent decades the administration of scopolamine, extracted from plants belonging to the Datura or Brugmansia genus, has become an important neurologic and toxicologic phenomenon. These extracts have been popularly known as "Burundanga." Chemical characteristics and clinical features of scopolamine intoxication are described. Anterograde amnesia and submissive behavior found in patients intoxicated with scopolamine are analyzed. Burundanga intoxication is related to other toxic phenomena found in different countries and similitudes with transient global amnesia are emphasized.

Markowitsch, H J; Dept of Psychology, University of Bielefeld, Germany (Editor) Memory disorders are among the most frequent concomitants of brain damage, but they are also diagnosed in patients with little or no obvious brain pathology. A severe form of this problem, which is both temporary and also largely unknown to the medical community, is called transient global amnesia (TGA). This is a memory disorder affecting mainly the elderly, and it influences a variety of memory domains. The short-term nature of this type of amnesia has to date hindered a precise description of this phenomenon. In the present volume specialists from around the world provide a thorough and detailed survey of TGA and related disorders, and how the problems involved can be handled clinically. From the Contents:
    • Early concepts of transient disorders with symptoms of amnesia
    • TGA in cases with space-occupying lesions
    • TGA triggered by mild head trauma
    • Migrainous influences and TGA

    Amnesias
Disorders causing partial or total inability to recall past experiences. Amnesia (memory loss) can be classified as retrograde (amnesia for events before illness, injury, or cerebral degeneration), anterograde (inability to store memory after illness, injury, or degeneration), global (amnesia for information related to all sensory channels and past times), modality specific (amnesia for events processed by a single sensory channel, eg, an agnosia), transient (fleeting amnesia, as occurs after brain trauma or in transient global amnesia), stable (fixed, as occurs after a serious event, eg, encephalitis, global ischemia, cardiac arrest), or progressive (as occurs with degenerative dementias, such as Alzheimer's disease). Memory can also be classified as factual (declarative) or skillful (procedural) in terms of cognitive expression. Posttraumatic amnesias for the periods immediately before and after concussion or more severe head trauma also seem to result from medial temporal lobe injury. More severe injuries may involve larger areas of memory storage and recall, as can many diffuse cerebral diseases that produce dementia.
