Vestibular Disorders: An Overview
Symptoms
The most frequently reported symptoms of vestibular disorders are dizziness, unsteadiness or imbalance when walking, vertigo, and nausea. These symptoms may be quite mild, lasting minutes, or quite severe, resulting in total disability. Because the vestibular system interacts with many other parts of the nervous system, symptoms may also be experienced as problems with vision, muscles, and thinking, and memory. In addition, people with vestibular disorders may suffer headache and muscular aches in the neck and back, increased tendency to suffer from motion sickness, and increased sensitivity to noise and bright lights. Patients with vestibular disorders often report fatigue and loss of stamina and an inability to concentrate. Difficulty with reading and speech may occur during times of fatigue. When these symptoms are constant and disabling, they may be accompanied by irritability, loss of self-esteem, and/or depression.
Statistics
Vestibular disorders occur frequently and can affect people of all ages and all walks of life.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Program, Mayo Medical Center, Rochester MN Vestibular Disorders Fall Prevention Appointment Info Follow Up Care ... Comments/Questions Vertigo, dizziness, spinning, wooziness, imbalance, BPPV, tilting environment, off-balance, nausea, falls, motion sickness; what do all these words have in common? They are all symptoms or terms that may be associated with a vestibular (inner ear) disorder. Forty percent of people over the age of 40 experience dizziness or balance problems at some point in their life. There are many causes for dizziness, but a large percentage is caused by an imbalance or loss within the peripheral vestibular system. This web page in intended only to offer information on vestibular rehabilitation to the patient. It is not intended to take the place of treatment by a healthcare professional.
What help is available for a person with one or more of these symptoms?
Vestibular Rehabilitation may offer relief of symptoms for persons suffering from an inner ear disorder. Vestibular Rehabilitation is an exercise program designed by specially trained therapists to help a person compensate for a loss or imbalance within the vestibular system. The program may include balance activities and/or eye movement exercises. The balance activities help the person maximize the use of the remaining vestibular function, their sight, and the sensation in their feet to keep their balance. When there is an imbalance in the vestibular system a person may also experience dizziness because the reflexes that help with eye movement have been changed. The eye exercises help the person's brain learn to re-program these reflexes. Because each patient's symptoms and needs are different, it is very important that the program be individually designed to meet those needs.

    18. Dizzy Lounge
The hope of this site is to give support to people living with vestibular disorders.
    http://couponmaniacom.homestead.com/DizzyLounge.html
This disorder can strike anyone from men, women and children at any time of their lives. The most common signs of a vestibular disorder are dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea, and vertigo, which is a sensation of the room spinning around you.
In some cases the symptoms can be mild and infrequent, while other cases the symptoms can result in a total life style change. People who once were able to work, drive, shop and do many of the things that most people take for granted, are now stuck in a world where they need to depend on their families and friends to help them with everything.
If you or anyone that you know lives with this disorder you may find it is also one of the most misunderstood illnesses. Finding a true diagnosis may take years and many visits to different types of doctors, even then many people never do find out the true cause of their dizziness.
Since your vestibular system interacts with other parts of your nervous system, you may also experience other symptoms such as blurry vision, bouncing vision, muscle aches, headaches, memory loss, and commonly a ringing sound in your ears, known as tinnitus. Living with these symptoms day after day for many years can easily lead to fatigue, depression and irritability. For a list of more symptoms click here. Symptoms
Most of us who live with this illness look fine on the outside and this is one of the reasons that not only our doctors, but many times our families and friends can't understand how we are feeling on the inside.
