Vestibular Disorders (Balance) What are Vestibular Disorders? Vestibular Disorders are disorders of the balance portion of the inner ear caused by damage or injury to the vestibular system. This system provides critical information to the brain to keep us balanced and healthy. When this crucial system functions improperly, you may become dizzy, nauseous, have difficulty walking or standing, and notice that certain eye functions are disturbed. In short, vestibular disorders may have a profound effect on your ability to live a normal life. What are the symptoms? According to the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA) there are many possible symptoms of vestibular disorders. The most well-known symptoms are dizziness, imbalance, and vertigo (violent spinning), but you may exhibit any of the following symptoms, or others, in varying degrees:
  • Objects in your view "jump"
  • Poor depth perception
  • Popping, clicking, ringing or buzzing sounds
  • Ears feel full
  • Nauseous, seasick, or hung over

The Vestibular System is the remarkably sensitive system which is responsible for the bodies sense of motion, and its ability to keep its balance and focus the eyes, in response to that sense of motion. As it is so complex and so sensitive, it is also easily disrupted, both by disease processes and trauma. The focus of this page is injury to the head and brain caused by the wrongful or negligent conduct of others.Thus, many diseases which effect the inner ear and the rest of the vestibular system are outside the direct focus of this page Click here for a listing of the numerous disease and associated health conditions, that can cause dysfunction of the vestibular system. Where we are aware of resources with respect to those conditions, we have provided links to help. Vestibular disorders involve a disturbing paradox in our experience with brain injured individuals: - Despite the fact that dizziness , nausea and vertigo are perhaps the most common of symptoms after a head injury;

    VEDA Conference - Portland, Oregon
    The following is a transcript of a lecture by Kenneth Erickson, M.D., at a VEDA conference held in Portland, Oregon.
    Patients and families, of course, have known for a long time that vestibular disorders bring about cognitive difficulties. Some psychologists and neurologists here in Portland for at least five years, crystallizing in the last two or three years, have now begun to recognize and study a number of cognitive disturbances associated with vestibular disorders.
    COGNITIVE DISTURBANCES What is meant by cognitive disturbances? Cognitive disturbances involve a difficulty in basic mental operations such as memory, paying attention or focusing attention on something, and in prolonged concentration. They also involve shifting attention from one subject or idea to another. People with cognitive disturbances have trouble in perceiving accurate spatial relationships between objects, in comprehending or expressing language, and performing calculations, and in a number of other areas.
