ACCELERATED STRATEGIC COMPUTING INITIATIVE The Methods Development Group is engaged in several ASCI code projects directed at delivering scaled MPP computing performance and enabling full-system analyses with the MDG computational mechanics codes. Our objective is to create new modeling tools for studying the engineering design of nuclear weapons under the extreme conditions of the stockpile lifetime. Our plan is to provide high quality production codes combined with the strongest possible user support, optimized to run on ASCI computer hardware. ParaDyn is an ASCI supported code that has already demonstrated outstanding performance for Weapons applications on ASCI computers. A new development effort aims to create a parallel implicit code capability for the NIKE and TOPAZ class of problems. This work concentrates on developments associated with matrix equation solvers, new surface contact capabilities and the important need to couple implicit and explicit code capabilities together. We intend to leverage our efforts with the general advances occurring in linear equation solvers and parallel computing tools in general. Reentry vehicle (RV) dynamics is another ASCI modeling effort supported by MDG. This project aims to write software that can better predict the structural dynamics of an RV under the extreme conditions of high mach number, compressible fluid flows. Our effort is focused on the structural and thermal aspects of this problem. With ASCI scale computing resources, we should be able to gain a better understanding of RV behavior with this simulation capability.

Tools News Project ... Home PETSc Installation at NERSC PETSc is installed on the IBM SP ( gseaborg.nersc.gov ) and on the Cray T3E-900 ( mcurie.nersc.gov ) at NERSC. To use PETSc, you must first load the PETSc modules . You may either explicitly choose a version of PETSc to load, or you may load the generic PETSc module which will provide the most recent, stable, installed version of PETSc. The advantage of a generic load is that you need not watch for the appearance of new versions, while the advantage of a specified version load is that code you need to compile with the library will not "break" because the library version has been swapped without the your direct intervention. Please choose the module loading mechanism that best suits your disposition. module load petsc # OR module load petsc.2.1.3 Loading the PETSc module will make the libraries, executables, man pages and environment variables available in the user's current environment. You can add this module command to your .login or .profile after the point where cshrc.nersc or profile.nersc is sourced. Compiling and linking with PETSc on the IBM SP Well commented PETSc examples are located in the directories $PETSC_DIR/src/sles/examples/tutorials for linear equation solvers and $PETSC_DIR/src/snes/examples/tutorials for non-linear equation solvers.
