Age-Appropriateness: Replay Value: Educational Value: A certificate of achievement for completion of the workbook. Is this certificate available after completion of the whole program or after individual sections? Does the program remember where you were when you worked in it before? Or will it be necessary to repeat your work? Is there a progress report built into the program? Children can choose to skip pages that they do not wish to complete at the moment. Will this affect their certificate? Does the software know? Will it progress beyond making equal groups of items? Graphics: The graphics are brightly colored and attractive making the better than a typical workbook.

Volume 5, Issue 6 - March 21, 2001 Help is on the Way: Interactive Math and Science Tutoring for Secondary Students at Gompers Students at Gompers Secondary School can now see and talk to tutors on-line while doing their math and science assignments. Through Windows and Lenses: Technology in Focus was officially launched March 19 as Verizon officials presented a $30,000 check to fund an intensive new, technology-based after-school science and math program. This pilot project will enable live video interaction between student tutors on the UCSD campus and 7th graders 20 miles away in Gompers classrooms. Joining in the celebration were school officials and representatives from the UCSD Office of Undergraduate Affairs, who wrote the grant and will organize the tutors. Also on hand were staff from the California Student Outreach and Access Program, a campus-community education broker, and staff from the San Diego Supercomputer Center, which will provide access to training labs. The students were oblivious to the festivities and visiting dignitaries. Wearing special headphones with a microphone, they were intent on trying out the new technology and getting to know their new Internet tutors. As they wrote on a special pad, they could share their work and then see smiles of encouragement on their computer monitors where an image of their tutors was displayed. A webcam mounted on top of each workstation sent their faces, questions, and ideas back to UCSD. What next? After several months of preparation, these students will arrive on the UCSD campus for a weeklong experience of student life first-hand and overnights in the dormitories. A highlight will be daily computer classes at SDSC.

The Interactive Mathematics Program Recognizing that its mathematics program was not aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards nor with the State of Illinois goals, Wells High School decided to restructure its mathematics curriculum. We chose the Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP), because high quality professional development with classroom support was available through the University of Illinois at Chicago. This professional development, graphing calculators, classroom supplies, and new textbooks were funded in part through an Amoco Foundation Leadership Grant. This grant was written by the Wells Mathematics Department Chair, Ted Wiecek, and the CLC staff person assigned to Wells, Cappy Ricks. Instead of being organized into courses such as Geometry, Advanced Algebra, or Trigonometry, IMP comes in "units" that are part of each "year" of the program. This is because the IMP curriculum is integrated and problem-centered. Most units begin with a central problem that is explored and solved over the course of six to eight weeks. As the teacher guides students through a variety of smaller problems within the unit, they develop the mathematical concepts and techniques they need to solve the central problem. A particular unit may combine several branches of mathematics so that students see how important ideas are related to each other. Some of these central problems are based in practical real-world situations, such as maximizing profits for a business or studying population growth. Others are more fanciful, involving situations like a pennant race or a circus act. Central problems may have connections with history, science, or literature. Because the curriculum is organized around such "big problems," students get a rich look at how mathematics is actually used.
