Math Competition: Discipline and Teamwork
Math teams and mathematics contests encourage problem solving, determination, and team work, helping students do better scholastically. This is Part One of an article explaining some of the benefits of getting students involved in mathematics contests. Click here for Part Two
Math competition can be one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences in mathematics for many students. As a former math competitor while in high school, and now as a high school math teacher, I have seen many students who have become much more interested in mathematics due to their experiences in competition.

When I was a high school student, I was not much interested in athletic competition. I found myself much more interested in my academic courses than in Phys. Ed. Consequently, I never considered trying out for the football team or the basketball team; instead, I focused my time and energy into an academic area that was of special interest to me - the math team.
There are many benefits of athletic competition - learning to work as a team player, the discipline of preparation for a game, and providing an outlet for the competitive person - these are all given as strengths of athletic competition. Well, I have seen these same benefits show up in math competition.

'A' Level Math Problems For Math Competitions
The problems on this page are 'A' level problems written by Douglas Twitchell. These are more challenging problems for high school level math competitions. Including A level problems in your competition will help distinguish between really good and exceptional students. Not all problems have lengthy solutions; some are easy to solve, provided you have a 'flash of insight'. Brief (not complete) solutions are shown in green, leaving the reader to work through the logic.

A.1
Find the following sum:
The trick here is to see each fraction as a difference of fractions, rather than a product of fractions. The answer is
A.2
Two circles (A and B) with radius 3 are externally tangent to the circle x - 6x + y - 8y - 21 = and also tangent to the line y = 4/3x. If k is the distance between the centers of the two circles A and B, find all possible values of k.
The solution to this problem is rather lengthy; the challenge is to recognize that there are three ways to arrange the circles that match the given criteria. The answers are

'D' Level Math Problems For Math Competitions
The problems on this page are 'D' level problems written by Douglas Twitchell. These problems are confidence builders. Most math competitions have a few problems that the average student can solve readily with knowledge of the subject area. Brief (not complete) solutions are shown in green, leaving the reader to work through the logic.

D.1
In a triangle, the measures of the angles are x, 3x, and 5x. What is the measure of the largest angle?
For a student with basic subject knowledge in geometry, this is a simple algebraic equation. Answer is 100 degrees
D.2
Solve for x if 2x - 5 < 11 and x + 3
Combining two inequalities with 'and'. The answer is x>8 and x
D.3
If a number is added to one more than that number, and then one less than the original number is subtracted from the sum, the result is 21. What is the original number?
Algebraically, this problem is easy to set up and solve. The biggest challenge is interpreting the wording of the problem. Answer:

There are 579 problems in the set. So far I have got up solutions for 1961 thru 1967 and most of 1968 and 1988. Many thanks Vladimir Pertsel who first made the years up to 1987 available on the internet in English many years ago (before the web). His pioneering work has saved me much time. Many thanks also to Arkadii Slinko for providing the years 1988-1992.

As I understand it, the history was as follows. The 1st All Russian Mathematical Olympiad was in 1961. In 1967 it was renamed the All Soviet Union Mathematical Olympiad and the numbering restarted, hence 1st ASU 1967. In 1992 it was renamed again as the Commonwealth of Independent States MO and the numbering restarted. But it was not held again. So 1992 was the last year. The problems were intended for schoolchildren aged 14-17. Each year there were two papers of 3 or 4 questions each at three different levels (according to form, roughly ages, 14, 15, 16), but with some overlap between the levels. I can usually do the the easier questions as fast as I can write down the answer, which is almost never true for modern IMO questions. The hardest questions are comparable to the IMO. The years up to 1987 are apparently published in Russian with solutions in Vasilev N B, Egorov A A, The problems of the All-Soviet-Union mathematical competitions, Moscow, Nauka 1988. ISBN 5020137308. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to get hold of a copy. However, Vladimir Pertsel published a large text file many years ago on the internet containing an English translation of the problems only. Unfortunately, some of the problems were rather hard to understand and I have substantially changed the wording here.

American Math Competitions, North Carolina Results The results of the 53rd annual AMC12 Examination (formerly, the AHSME), administered on Tuesday, February 12, 2002, and February 27, 2002 have been announced. The first administration, form A and the second administration, form B are collated together for the team standings, which explains why Walter Williams High is listed twice. Students in grades 12 and below are eligible to participate. This year, students in grades 6 through 10 had the chance to participate in the AMC10 Contest on the same day as the AMC12. In North Carolina 130 schools and more than 6000 students participated in the competition. The listing below is now official. Top North Carolina Schools by Classification Class School Exam Manager City Julie Graves Durham Walter Williams High James Smith Burlington Charles D Owen High Susan Stevenson Black Mountain Williamston High Kay Stephens Williamston Private Charlotte Latin School Rudene Marlowe Charlotte Jr./Middle Ligon Middle Pat Heald Raleigh The ranking is determined by the sum of the top three scores on the AMC12 except for the Jr./Middle competition that is the sum of the top three scores on the AMC10. All six of these schools will receive a beautiful Walnut AMC plaque.

T he 51st annual American High School Mathematics Examination (AHSME) will be given on February 15, 2000. The name of the contest has changed, however, to AMC 12. The AMC 12 is a problem solving exam designed to encourage and recognize mathematical ability among high school students. Starting in year 2000, the American Math Competitions will add a fifth contest, the AMC 10 for students in grades 10 and below. The exam has been given nationwide since 1948 and was taken last year by 10,000 students in North Carolina alone. Taking the AHSME is the first step towards competing in the International Math Olympiad, but the exam is intended for average students as well as "superstars". Missouri Southern State College Math League
Riverton High School has been attending the MSSC Math League competitions since 1970. The competitions consist of four team members in each of three categories taking a small 3 problem test dealing with their category. They have approximately 25 minutes to complete that test, then all twelve work together to solve a single team problem. Calculators are not allowed in the competition.
We have won several awards in this competition including:
13 - First Place in Division (1971, 1972, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999)

MATH COMPETITIONS
(Teacher Diane Butler provided this information to the Middle-L listserve)
I have been preparing for a presentation at our local area council of mathematics meeting by collecting information about math contests, competitions and clubs for any and all grades 2-12. Several people in the newsgroup have asked for the info I have gathered. Here is my list so far... some may be better suited for different size schools, different groups of students, or financial situations. I think any of them could be used creatively to enrich any classroom situation. There are a few additional subjects mentioned in the list. I would appreciate any info on additional competitions or contests that your students may have participated inmath or otherwise...
