The $45 prize was a nice bonus, but Bill Owens ’02 and his fellow Macalester math majors do it because it’s fun .
With their teammates and classmates, seniors Bill Owens and Andy Cantrell have done significant work in math competitions and research during their four years at Macalester.
Bill Owens has been enormously successful in math competitions during his time at Macalester. Math competition exams vary in length from a few hours to several days, and usually test technical competence and ingenuity in a variety of math disciplines. Often, students will be asked to cut across disciplines to find solutions.
Owens names the Konhauser Problem Fest as his favorite of the various exams in which he has participated because of the relatively short amount of time it takes to complete:three hours for ten problems.
Owens and his regular teammates, Emilia Simeonova ’02 and Alex Burst ’02 participated this year in the annual math competition between with teams from Macalester, St. Thomas, Carleton, St. Olaf, and Gustavus Adolphus College. Owens’ team placed third of 20 teams, earning Macalester third place in the competition.
The Konhauser is also a favorite because of the cash prizes - Owens’ three-person Macalester team split a forty-five dollar prize for their third-place finish.

Students line up for math camp
    By Carol Thorbes
It's not the kind of camp most teens dream of heading for once school is out for the summer. But in B.C. the line up to get into the province's first annual Esso regional math camp for grades 10 and 11 students was so long, applicants had to be turned away.
Hosted by Simon Fraser University and sponsored by the Imperial Oil charitable foundation, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences and SFU's math department, the camp was by-invitation-only.
The Lower Mainland's brightest math students with proven prowess in problem solving in numerous national and international math competitions were the only eligible candidates.
The camp was aimed at extending their problem solving skills and understanding of applied math, like encryption. Participants were selected from lists of nominees submitted by their high school math teachers.
"We were totally overwhelmed," says SFU senior lecturer Malgorzata Dubiel, one of the organizers of the regional camp, held in June at Burnaby campus. "We figured we'd have trouble getting 15 students, which was our original limit. We received applications for 80 nominees and eventually accepted 23."
SFU assistant professor Petr Lisonek, a camp co-organizer, attributes the phenomenal interest to teacher involvement.

SFU HOSTS FIRST REGIONAL MATH CAMP
"We were totally overwhelmed," says SFU senior lecturer Malgorzata Dubiel, one of the organizers of the regional camp, held June 25 to 29 at SFU Burnaby campus’ East Academic Annex. "We figured we’d have trouble getting 15 students, which was our original limit. We received applications for 80 nominees and eventually accepted 23."
SFU assistant professor Petr Lisonek, a camp co-organizer, attributes the phenomenal interest to teacher involvement. "B.C. high school teachers spend a lot of time coaching high performance math students for competitions," says Lisonek. Cary Chien, a math teacher of 27 years at Vancouver’s David Thompson Secondary school, thinks other factors prompted the flood of camp applicants.
"At least 80 percent of the B.C. students excelling in math competitions are Asian," says Chien, whose students have won national medals and helped David Thompson place first in numerous math competitions. "Asian parents traditionally encourage their children to do well in math competitions because they want them to go to university and succeed there. Once their children succeed, that success feeds on itself," says Chien, the founder of an enriched integrated math and science program for 13 to 15 year old math whizzes at David Thompson.

    Information
Through our once-weekly problem solving seminar and two day-long sessions, students train for math competitions. All activities, including the actual competitions, are optional - but be aware that it has been long established in mathletics, as in other sports, that commitment to a regular training regime is strongly correlated with success in high-level competition. Bluntly put, if you do not participate in the training sessions you are EXTREMELY unlikely to come even close to winning. This year, we will be writing:

Featured in the Author Spotlight this month, is Willie Walker, President of Project Motivational Math. Twenty three years ago when walker left the banking industry to begin a career in education, he had no idea of the challenges he would face — and conquer — in the classrooms of Miami-Dade County, Florida. That first year it became apparent that the traditional way of teaching wasn't getting his students excited about learning math. In response, Willie began incorporating memorization and number crunches from a business standpoint into his lesson plans. The result? Walker's students blossomed; his students developed a positive attitude about a subject that ordinarily intimidates, and once past that hurdle, they began to think critically in ways that spilled over into all other areas of study. And so
