Download Classic ( System 7.1 - 9.x ) , OS X or Windows Ok, "drill and kill" work sheets don't get much respect these days but they do have their place. We wrote this terrific facts review program to eliminate some problems associated with paper work sheets. There is no copy machine, no correcting, no cheating (okay, not as much), and for students that have trouble with the pressure of timed tests, most of these puzzles allow them to practice independently with a timer. Best of all, these activities are fun!
Although many of the games in this application were designed with 8-10 year olds as the target audience, all ages will find some suitable activities.
This application contains several different math fact exercises. (click to view a screen shot)

Saxon math: practice, practice
Gail Russell Chaddock (chaddockg@csps.com)
Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor WASHINGTON You'd be hard pressed to find anyone neutral about Saxon Math. For many recent graduates of teacher education programs, it's the incarnation of "drill and kill" - devoutly to be avoided. But don't tell that to parents storming school boards and state legislatures to get Saxon texts into schools. They're still wondering why their eighth-graders can't figure 10 percent of 100 without the aid of a calculator, and are convinced Saxon will get classrooms back to basics - or sanity. The heart of the Saxon approach is the conviction that understanding mathematics is a skill that can be learned through practice. You'll find problems in a Saxon textbook, and lots of them. Students are urged to work each problem quickly and accurately. The curriculum, used in many US schools, is viewed as out of step with current reform plans that stress group work and unconventional approaches to problem solving.

Microworld: SAT Math Practice and Tutoring Center 1
Click the Hyperlink above to visit the Microworld in your Browser.
Author James White
This Microworld will give you unlimited opportunity to prepare for the Mathematics section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). In its present (free) form, it generates a new 25-question Diagnostic Test each time you ask for one. Each test is unique, because the program creates the tests from scratch. Your first step is to take a 30-minute Diagnostic Test to see where you need practice. The Microworld clock keeps track of time, and lets you know how much time you have left as you go along. At the end of 30 minutes (or when you finish the test) you are taken to the Score Review to see how you did. From there, you may go to Solution Mode to see what the correct answers were, and you may go to Practice Mode to practice unlimited new versions of any test problem. Each time you try a new practice problem, you learn right away whether you got it right. Your cumulative practice scores for a session are also available for viewing in the Score Review, so that you may keep track of your practice progress. Successors to this Microworld will emphasize the Tutoring capabilities of our "Problem Objects." Currently under development by several Mathwright Authors, they have a variety of new problem templates and input formats, and will offer more than simply the "correct" answer. They will also offer both general explanations about how the problem is to be solved, and specific step-by-step worked solutions for each problem generated (both in Practice Mode and in Solution Mode). Watch for them at the Library and elsewhere on the Web.

A) If you have fire(s), how many families live in the longhouse? (Hint- Two families share each fire.)
2 X = families that live in the longhouse.
B) If there are families, and each family has people in it, how many people live in the longhouse?
So, families X people in each family = people that live in the longhouse.
C) If there are longhouses in the village, and each house has fire(s), how many fires are there in the village?
So, longhouses X fire(s) = fire(s) in the village.
D) If there are longhouses in the village, and each house has fire(s), how many families are in the village? (Hint- Two families for each fire.)
Then, families in each longhouse X longhouses in the village =
