The project is now coming under fire from the Mathematics department - "Lennox operation system is useless"... :) If you are using Linux to teach in your math programs, would you be able to provide me a list of programs that you make use of regularly, as well as a brief description of how it assists your classroom teaching? Friedberg Aims To Boost Skills Of Math Teachers By Mark Sullivan Staff Writer Prof. Solomon Friedberg (Mathematics) has won a three-year $252,000 federal grant that will support a project to improve the teaching skills of future math professors. The grant from the Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education will fund the efforts of a team of researchers, led by Friedberg, to develop a case-study method - similar to those used in law and business schools - for training graduate students in mathematics to be effective classroom teachers. "Graduate students in math, first of all, study math - but they also play a role in the academy as teachers," said Friedberg. "Typically, grad students get very little training in how to be teachers of mathematics. This project aims to develop new kinds of materials to help them become better teachers." The training materials his team is devising will present case studies of classroom situations that a college math professor might face, Friedberg said. They will cover issues such as mathematics pedagogy, the relationship between teachers and teaching assistants, and the adaptation of foreign graduate students - who number roughly half of those enrolled in American doctoral programs in mathematics - to American teaching methods. A challenge any math teacher faces, Friedberg noted, is reaching students whose gift for numbers is not as great as his or her own. "To be a math professor, you have to be a fast learner of math," he said. "Then you go into a classroom where not every student is a fast learner. How do you bridge that gap?"

That question was posed by a second-grader, assigned to compose a riddle rather than simply add up numbers. Meanwhile, in a fifth-grade classroom, teams of students slid together plastic shapes to build polygons. Both exercises were part of the the investigatory approach to math education employed at the Richard J. Murphy Elementary School in Boston. That investigative focus impressed Johnny Lott, president of the National Council of Teachers of Math, who toured the school last week before kicking off a three-day NCTM regional conference in Boston. "There's more to math than learning by rote," says Mr. Lott. The Murphy School's approach isn't typical, according to a report on math education released this year by The Education Trust, a nonprofit organization in Washington. The report described math education in the US as a "mile wide and an inch deep," covering more topics than do other nations, but in far less depth. Part of the problem, The Education Trust found, was the level of math education teachers themselves receive. The average US education major in the 1990s completed only two semesters of math - less than the three to five courses recommended by the Mathematical Association of America.

Improvement / Safety School Issues Article S C H O O L I S S U E S A R T I C L E Vermont Teachers Return to Math Class Determined to raise the mathematics skills of elementary school students, Vermont state education officials launched the Vermont Mathematics Initiative three years ago. Elementary teachers learn algebra, geometry, problem solving, and calculus so they can better understand and explain math to their students. Included: Lessons from the Vermont Mathematics Initiative Algebra, trigonometry, and calculus are not topics often associated with elementary school teachers. Vermont education officials, however, calculate that a professional development program in mathematics for elementary teachers will add up to better math comprehension for them and better math skills for their students. Called the Vermont Math Initiative (VMI), teachers in the three-year program learn higher-level math in a way they can understand and then take that increased understanding to their classrooms. At the end of the program, teachers receive a master's degree in education with a specialty in K-6 mathematics education. VMI's goal is to prepare 300 math teachers with advanced degrees by 2005; those teachers will then instruct other teachers and help shape mathematics instruction in their schools. Currently, 105 teachers from 76 schools are enrolled in the program, which began in 1999. Vermont has about 3,200 elementary school teachers in 350 K-5 or K-6 elementary schools.

Education Math Teachers Go Back To Basics A decade ago, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics embraced "fuzzy math" the theory that it is more important for a student to understand how he arrives at an answer, rather than arriving at the correct answer itself. Now the group has altered its position and is emphasizing accuracy, efficiency and basic skills such as memorizing multiplication tables. Following the group's 1989 advocacy of fuzzy math, 49 states adopted the new teaching standards in whole or in part to the dismay of irate parents, and even some teachers and university mathematicians. While the latest revision does not completely abandon the fuzzy math notion, the change is likely to have a huge impact on the way mathematics is taught in the U.S. since the council's document is the closest thing this country has to a national curriculum in mathematics. Now, following the decade long experiment, teachers will have to go back and relearn how to teach math by traditional means, textbook publishers will have to revise their math texts and new standardized test will have to be ordered. Officials of the council reject the suggestion that they made an error asserting, instead, that they had been misunderstood.

The two groups came together last week for a valleywide conference hosted by the college’s math faculty to talk about coordinating efforts to teach math. Their work didn’t end there. After agreeing to keep meeting, they set priorities for what they hope to accomplish. Steve Dostal, COD math faculty member, said he plans to set up regular meetings that representatives from each school will attend. Professional Development Day for High School Math Teachers On June 26th, PIMS Deputy Director, Michael Lamoureux, ran a Professional Development Day workshop for high school mathematics teachers on creating and analysing mathematical fractals using familiar software tools. The workshop was held at St. Francis School in northwest Calgary, and attended by some 35 enthusiastic math teachers from across the city. The new Western Canada Protocol for Mathematics includes a requirement for students to learn some of the basics of fractals, as a mathematically rich and aesthetically beautiful creation arising from recent mathematical research. Using simple and widely available computer tools such as Geometer's SketchPad(TM), it is possible for our junior high and high school students to explore this fascinating area by recursive renderings of really simple shapes or objects. A summary of some of the techniques learned at the workshop will appear in the next issue of PIMS education magazine, Pi in the Sky. A special thanks goes out to Ms Ellen Radomski, Secondary Math Consultant for the Calgary Separate School System, who organized the workshop.
