General Information Mission Statement About the Tutors What To Expect ... Back to Tutorial Services About The Tutors - Math Lab
The tutorial staff for the spring semester consists of peer tutors, graduate tutors and professors. Peer tutors are undergraduates enrolled at Pace University majoring in either a science or business discipline. A business math peer tutor specializes in tutoring MAT 104, 111 and 117. A science math peer tutors specializes in tutoring MAT 130, 131 and 132 as well as either some science courses that involve math; such as physics or chemistry, or some higher level math courses. Business math tutors that are management science majors, as well as science tutors whose major is computer science have taken and can tutor in Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Structures for Computer Science. Most graduate math tutors are students who have not taken undergraduate courses at Pace, however, the courses they have taken as undergraduates are consistent with those taught at Pace. The concepts taught in those courses are the same or are similar to courses taught at Pace and most graduate tutors can tutor in just about every math course at Pace. In addition, the tutorial staff consists of two professors. One, Dr. Mitchell Preiss, is assistant head to the Math Department and has taught at Pace for more than 20 years. The other, Dr. Klimi, has published many articles on mathematics in journals and has taught mathematics for many years at universities around the world.

SACC Gaining New Synergy with Math Faculty
by Jana Schiowitz
March 10, 2003
A new program, started this semester, has math tutors grading homework for professors to create more of a relationship between the tutors at the Student Academic Consulting Center (SACC) and the math faculty. There are three professors involved, including Professor Aaron Todd and three math tutors. The professors assign homework to the students and the tutors make solutions for the problems. Although the program has just started, students are showing an increase in the amount of work they are doing for the homework problems. The idea is to grade the homework and see if the completed homework is helping the students do better in the math class. Math is an essential subject at Baruch College. During the fall semester of 2002, student attendance for math tutoring made up 55 percent of all tutoring done at SACC. A total of 900 students came to SACC for math, totaling 5,193 hours of tutoring. At SACC, there are 24 math tutors. There is tutoring in math 2001 and math 2206 amongst others. Baruch students are allowed six hours of math tutoring each week. A student may attend tutoring for three hours in one day, but only with the same tutor for two of those hours. Math tutoring is done using one tutor for every three students since math is in such high demand.

Speaking of Math Tutors...I spoke with the lady who owns and operates AMathOasis on Washington Street yesterday. Wow, what a Gal! I was SO impressed. She works mostly with older students (algebra and up) but, loves to get younger kids. I'm considering taking my second grader to her to help him get a leg up on things. She will not only tutor him, she will teach me to help him....no hidden adjends. No secret curriculum. I'll let you know how I make out. By the way, do you think I can send the MathLand publishers the bill for tutoring? Better yet the OAUSD? The main reason he NEEDS tutoring is because he learned nothing in the area of math in the first grade because MathLand (which was purchased as a supplement) was the ONLY math which was taught. I guess choosing his own answers in an Arithmetwist book didn't do the trick. Go figure =) first grade? I guess I could try =) Last changed: October 30, 1998

Someone left an earlier message saying MathLand had spawned a new industry in math tutoring at Department of Defense facilities around the world. This past weekend I noticed two math tutoring companies advertising on Washington Avenue. Maybe these companies been there a while and I just never noticed them, but does Petaluma have a growing math tutoring industry? Last changed: October 30, 1998

Focus:Hope Looking for Volunteers
by Glen W. Chung and Julie Reyer
Focus:Hope, a nationally recognized non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to tutor candidates in basic mathematics for the Advanced Technology Center. They are asking the University to provide tutors Monday through Friday of each week this f all term. The suggested times are: Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. through 2:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday 2:20 p.m. through 5:30 p.m. They would like two tutors for each time period. The Advanced Technology Center is the second phase of the Focus:Hope Adult Education and Employment Initiative. (In the first phase, candidates receive education going up to an equivalent of 10th grade as well as machine shop training. Meanwhile, they w ork in an on-site machine shop, finishing various parts.) The second phase has the candidates learning modern flexible manufacturing cells complete with robots and lots of CMMs. During this phase, the candidates also receive further education culminatin g in an associates degree. (They can also continue to get a bachelors degree, though the program is so new, no one has gotten that far yet.) Math tutor time commitment First, you have to drive to Detroit. Including driving time, for 2:30-5:00 slot, we leave at 1:45 and get back around 6:00. Ideally, you should go every week, but a few people this term have arranged to switch with someone and actually go every other we ek. (So, if you can only spare 1/2 a day every other week, please volunteer too!!)

Kudos to the Math Tutors Laura Leighton Never fear the Math Tutors are here. Math comes easy for some students, but for others it is a daily battle. This is why a math tutoring room is available in the college center during every block of the day. As the bell rings for class, not only are students rushing to class, but they are also filing into the tutoring room. Math Tutors give up a free period every day to help students of all levels. Every day they are bombarded with questions ranging from Algebra to Calculus. Each night, as I toil through my daily math problems, I am put at ease with the realization that my problems will be answered. My reliable Math Tutor will be waiting the next day, with a smile. These commendable math tutors include: Ms. Rochelle Rohlfs, Mr. Brian Sandall, Mr. Roger Wright, Mrs. Lisa Schmidt, Mrs. Kathi Smith, Mrs. Mary Baker, Mr. Dennis Kathman, and juniors Liz Winkler, Johanna del Mundo, and Bridget Wychulus. Hats off and kudos to you, Math Tutors.
