Main research areas
Mathematical and numerical analysis of nonlinear physical fields by the finite element method and optimization techniques. The nonlinear problems concerned are mathematically described by partial differential equations and inequalities of elliptic or parabolic type. The mathematical as well as numerical tools employed in the research have common features for all classes of the problems considered. The problems have technologically important applications in practice, where linear models are often not adequate. Special attention is devoted to problems with uncertain data and the worst scenario method. The working group has close scientific contacts with a lot of researchers in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. Let us name the Charles University in Prague, Technical University in Brno, Weierstrass Institut in Berlin, University of Texas at Austin, University of Jyvaskyla, Xiang-tan University, University of Westminster, etc.

Main research areas
The investigation of the structure of function spaces and of operators on these spaces. Application of the results to the solution of boundary value problems. The group was initiated in the Seventies. The now existing research team, in cooperation with mathematicians of other universities, has continued this work and extended it. A long-lasting task is: to give a possibly complete description of important properties (as, e.g., boundedness, compactness, ...) of integral operators and of embedding in function spaces with a particular emphasize on limiting cases and optimality of the results, to obtain estimates of important quantities describing the behavior of these operators (norms, measures of noncompactness, approximation and entropy numbers), and to apply these results to boundary value problems. Intensive collaboration has been going on with both domestic and foreign institutions: Charles University in Prague, University of Agriculture in Prague, Technical University in Prague, University of West Bohemia in Plzen, Brock University in St. Catharines, Friedrich-Schiller-Universitat in Jena, Technische Universitat in Darmstadt, Universitat in Bayreuth, Institute of Mathematics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in Tbilisi, Steklov Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Technical University in Lulea, Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, University of Sussex, Cardiff University, Universita di Firenze, Universita di Napoli.

Abstract:
A mathematical model is presented that predicts moisture and heat transfer in ventilated cavities such as attics, roof cavities and catherdral ceilings. The model performs a transient moisture and heat balance as a function of time of year and includes the storage of moisture and heat at the construction layers. The model includes both molecular diffusion and capillary transfer within the materials. Radiation exchange among the entilated cavity surfaces is predicted using a mean-radiant-temperature-network model. Airflow from the house into the ventilated cavity is predicted using a stack effect model with aggregated effective leakage areas. Air exchange between the ventilated cavity and outdoor environment is predicted by a semi-empirical model. The relative humidity in the house is permitted to vary during the winter and is calculated from a moisture balance of the whole building.

Through Mazes to Mathematics This late 12th Century manuscript maze (13cm in diameter) is in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich (Clm. 14731, Fol 82 v.). The text above the maze reads CUM MINOTHAURO PUGNAT THESEUS [IN] LABORINTO . = Theseus fights with the Minotaur in the Labyrinth.

for larger image. The maze design was clearly intended to be the 12-level simple, alternating, transit maze with level sequence 3 2 1 4 7 6 5 8 11 10 9 12, a common maze in medieval manuscripts, but the 11th level was taken over by the center image (traces of it are still visible); level 8 is led directly to the center; levels 9 and 10 are now cut off from the rest of the path, and have been joined separately to the center. The topological meaning of the maze has been sacrificed to the visual impact of the composition.

The Big Idea
Well, not such a big idea really. The general argument is to consider tax and luxury rates and forget that they can only move in increments of 10%. We consider the little increments in, for example, the tax rates required to pay for maintenance or the luxury rates required to keep a city out of civil disorder caused by each decision we take, on the grounds that it is the aggregate of all these little increments that force us to make the 10% jumps. Our 'income' each turn is the total number of trade arrows T , created in all our cities. This is 'spent' either as luxuries, science or money. It is assumed that our priorities are
  • Generate enough money to pay for maintenance on all our city improvements.

Mathematical analysis could aid flu vaccine selection
Millions of people may one day have better odds of fending off the flu as a result of new research that could improve the choice of viral strains included in each year's vaccine. Princeton researchers Joshua Plotkin, Jonathan Dushoff and Simon Levin analyzed the genetic sequences of flu strains from the last 16 years and found patterns that could be used to predict which strain is likely to predominate in the following year. Each year, the scientists at the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health analyze pre-season reports of flu cases around the globe and select which of the constantly evolving strains of influenza virus to include in the 75 million doses of flu vaccine that are distributed around the country. These predictions have proven to be largely accurate and the resulting vaccines are credited with saving millions of lives. In some years, however, the vaccine has not targeted the strain that turned out to be most active. In a paper published in the April 23 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Princeton researchers proposed a mathematical method for predicting the coming year's flu strain based on the genetic sequences of the strains from previous years.

Abstract: Aerial photographs were posted on the Israel Defenses Forces web site as evidence that the destruction in the Jenin refugee camp was on a small scale, incompatible with claims that there was a massacre. However, measurement of the area of destruction shown in the same photographs, compared with the population density of the camp, actually lends credibility to claims by Palestinians (and many international observers) that hundreds of people were killed. In April 2002 the Israeli army attacked the UN-operated Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. News sources I generally trust (including
