    Copernicus, Nicolaus (1473-1543)
Polish astronomer (born Mikolaj Kopernik) who in his De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium ("On the Revolution of the Celestial Sphere") challenged the geocentric worldview of Aristotle , accepted by the Church and by most intellectuals in Europe at that time, by arguing that the Earth and other planets orbit around the Sun. Prudently, Copernicus himself was not inclined to explore the ramifications of his new scheme. But his demotion of the Earth to a mere satellite of the Sun encouraged others, such as Giordano Bruno , to speculate that there might be many Earth-like worlds bearing life in the universe. Copernicus, Nicolaus geb. 19.02.1473 in Thorn, gest. 24.05.1543 in Frauenburg Astronom

    Nicolaus Copernicus
    a.k.a. Mikolaj Koppernigk
De Revolutionibus , in which he asserted that the Earth rotated on its axis once each day and in fact traveled around the sun once a year. This was a truly fantastic concept for the time given Ptolemy's Geocentric universe that was widely accepted by the church for over 1,000 years. Claudius Ptolemy , an Egyptian living in Alexandria, at about 150 A.D., gathered and organized the thoughts of the earlier thinkers. (It must be noted that one ancient Greek astronomer, Aristarchus, had ideas similar to those more fully developed by Copernicus but they were rejected in favor of the geocentric Earth-Centered ) scheme espoused by the likes of Pythagoras and Aristotle.) Ptolemy's findings were that the earth was a fixed, inert, immovable mass, located at the center of the universe, and all celestial bodies, including the sun and the fixed stars, revolved around it. It was a theory that appealed to human nature. It fit with the casual observations that a person might want to make in the field; and second, it fed man's ego. Copernicus was in no hurry to publish his theory, though parts of his work were circulated among a few of the astronomers that were giving the matter some thought; indeed, Copernicus' master work might not have ever reached the printing press if it had not been for a young man who sought out the master in 1539. George Rheticus was a 25 year old German mathematics professor who was attracted to the 66-year old cleric, having read one of his papers. Intending to spend a few weeks with Copernicus, he ended up staying, as a houseguest, for two years, so fascinated was he with Copernicus and his theories. Now, up to this time, Copernicus was reluctant to publish his works, not so much that he was concerned with what the church might say about his novel theory (

    COPERNICUS, Nicolaus (b. Feb. 19, 1473; Torun Poland; d. May 24, 1543; Frauenburg)
In 1491 he entered the University of Cracow where he became interested in astronomy. He went to Italy in 1496, staying four years in Bologna and three in Padua and finally taking a doctorate in canon law at the University of Ferrara. By this time he had become a canon of Frauenburg, a post he was to hold until his death.
Copernicus's astronomical studies in Bologna, with the neo-platonist astronomer Domenico Maria Novara, both brought him a distinguished reputation and led to a dissatisfaction with the prevailing system of astronomy: the system outlined by Ptolemy in the Almagest in the second century AD. It assumed that the Earth, unmoving, was at the centre of the universe around which the Moon, the Sun, the stars and other known planets revolved with perfect uniform circular motion.
In his work De revolutionibus orbium coelestium The book did meet opposition from Aristotelians and from theologians, who found that it conflicted with the Bible. Other astronomers, like Tycho Brahe himself, found it simply absurd that the Earth could be flying through space. A moving Earth ought also to imply apparent movement in the fixed stars.
Moreover, although the heliocentric theory explained the movements of the Moon and the planets in a more elegant way than the Ptolemaic system, Copernicus's insistence on perfect circular orbits did not make his system simpler than Ptolemy's.

    Nicolaus Copernicus
Before the 16th century, the common belief was that the sun and all the other planets revolved around the Earth. This theory had been developed by the ancient Greek astronomer Ptolemy around A.D. 150, but the Polish astronomer Copernicus found that the Ptolemaic system could not explain the observed motions of the planets. In 1543, he published a book called The Revolutions of the Heavenly Orbs , which argued that the Earth was not the center of the universe but was one of the planets and, like them, revolved around the sun. This model of the solar system is known as the Copernican system. Copernicus also said that the Earth spins on its axis once per day, which accounts for why the sky appears to revolve around the Earth. retrograde

Polish astronomer, nicolaus copernicus, Astronomical theory of heliocentricsystems. Biography astronomers. copernicus, nicolaus (14731543),.
    http://www.virtualiti.co.uk/Copernicus.htm
Copernicus, Nicolaus Polish astronomer, best known for his astronomical theory that the sun is at rest near the center of the universe, and that the earth, spinning on its axis once daily, revolves annually around the sun. This is called the heliocentric, or sun-centered, system. Early Life and Education Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473, in Thorn (now Toru n ), Poland, to a family of merchants and municipal officials. Copernicus's maternal uncle, Bishop L ukasz Watzenrode, saw to it that his nephew obtained a solid education at the best universities. Copernicus entered Jagie ll onian University in 1491, studied the liberal arts for four years without receiving a degree, and then, like many Poles of his social class, went to Italy to study medicine and law. Before he left, his uncle had him appointed a church administrator in Frauenberg (now Frombork); this was a post with financial responsibilities but no priestly duties. In January 1497 Copernicus began to study canon law at the University of Bologna while living in the home of a mathematics professor, Domenico Maria de Novara. Copernicus's geographical and astronomical interests were greatly stimulated by Domenico Maria, an early critic of the accuracy of the Geography of the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy . Together, the two men observed the occultation (the eclipse by the moon) of the star Aldebaran on March 9, 1497.

    58. Copernicus, Nicolaus
copernicus, nicolaus (14731543). Polish astronomer who believed thatthe Sun, not the Earth, is at the centre of the Solar System
    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/C/Copernicus/1.h
    Copernicus, Nicolaus
Polish astronomer who believed that the Sun, not the Earth, is at the centre of the Solar System, thus defying the Christian church doctrine of the time. For 30 years he worked on the hypothesis that the rotation and the orbital motion of the Earth were responsible for the apparent movement of the heavenly bodies. His great work De revolutionibus orbium coelestium/On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres was not published until the year of his death.
Copernicus relegated the Earth from being the centre of the universe to being merely a planet (the centre only of its own gravity and the orbit of its solitary Moon). This forced a fundamental revision of the anthropocentric view of the universe and came as an enormous psychological shock to European culture. Copernicus's model could not be proved right, because it contained several fundamental flaws, but it was the important first step to the more accurate picture built up by later astronomers.
Copernicus began to make astronomical observations in 1497, although he relied mainly on data accumulated by others. In about 1513 he wrote a brief, anonymous text entitled Commentariolus, in which he outlined the material he later discussed in De revolutionibus.
