Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

HASSLER WHITNEY
(with ALBERT TUCKER) We are here at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in Hassler Whitney's office on 10 April 1984. The interviewers are Albert Tucker from Princeton University and William Aspray from the Charles Babbage Institute. Tucker: Well, I guess you must have some recollections of the year that you were at Fine Hall as a National Research Council Fellow. That was '31-'32, wasn't it? Whitney: I have a very strong feeling about that year. It was a very wonderful year. It may not be quite so easy for me to find the details. I remember one item during the autumn: I think there were seven separate seminars in topology going on at the same time at one point. Tucker: Was it [James W.] Alexander that supposedly was your supervisor or [Solomon] Lefschetz or [Oswald] Veblen? Whitney: It was essentially Alexander. I don't remember if there was a formal requirement that I have a supervisor, but he served as one most of the time. Tucker: Whitney: I may have seen a lot more of Lefschetz than of Alexander, but I know that Alexander was the one I was most connected with, theoretically and preferably in a sense. After all he was a mountain climber, so how could I help it.

During the fourth International Congress of Mathematicians, held in Rome in 1908, the following resolution was adopted:
"The Congress, recognizing the importance of a comparative study on the methods and plans of teaching mathematics at secondary schools, charges Professors F. Klein, G. Greenhill, and Henri Fehr to constitute an International Commission to study these questions and to present a report to the next Congress."

This resolution was submitted on the initiative of David Eugene Smith, who had suggested the idea of such an international commission three years earlier in the journal L'Enseignement Mathématique, in response to an article by Fehr. It marks the inception of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction - although the Commission was known in its earlier years as the "International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics".
Over the years various Executives Committees of the Commission (first known as "Central Committees") have succeeded one another. The list of their officers and members appears below. This information has been gathered from the following sources:

He was appointed there as extraordinary professor in 1936, being promoted to full professor in 1953. He retired from Geneva and was given an honorary position there in 1973. In addition to these permanent appointments de Rham held a number of visiting professorships. He visited Harvard in 1949/50 and the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton in 1950 and again in 1957/58. He also visited the Tata Institute in Bombay in 1966. In [4] Raoul Bott describes the context of de Rham's famous theorem:- In some sense the famous theorem that bears his name dominated his mathematical life, as indeed it dominates so much of the mathematical life of this whole century. When I met de Rham in 1949 at the Institute in Princeton he was lecturing on the Hodge theory in the context of his 'currents'. These are the natural extensions to manifolds of the distributions which had been introduced a few years earlier by Laurent Schwartz and of course it is only in this extended setting that both the de Rham theorem and the
