October 30, 2002: Here's today's problem and the Expressions 2002 program that solves it: Insert (addition) and (multiplication) operators as required into the string of digits 123456789 to form an expression that evaluates to 2002. For example, if the desired value were 100, then one solution would be 12+34+5×6+7+8+9=100. This program was prompted by a viewer request. It is similar to the Expressions100 program which required + and - operators. The complication this time is that multiplications must be performed before additions. The same viewer also posed a much tougher version that's providing more hours of fun - stay tuned. October 26, 2002: A little exercise in Computational Geometry was posted in the Delphi Techniques section the other day. Included are an improved function testing for line intersection, and functions to construct a perpendicular from a point to a line and to construct a line through a point on a line at a given angle. I developed them for use in Dudeney's Dissection program, but it seems like they may be handy for any problems which combine computer programming and geometry. October 20, 2002:

Loyd, Dudeney and... Galactic Takeover by Serhiy Grabarchuk
t's amusing to see how things that were interesting to puzzlers many decades ago look fresh and attractive today. Of course, they were presented in a somewhat different manner, but their core is still appealing to their solvers.
Everybody knows the Dots & Boxes game. It's a classic pencil-and-paper game that kids and adults have played for over 100 years. Rules are so simple that young children can understand them, but the game has so interesting and non-trivial strategy that to play well will challenge even an adult. At the same time it makes a wonderful puzzle producing almost endless number of challenges every time you play it. Below we'd like to propose you two classic challenges by Sam Loyd and Henry E. Dudeney, which were created more than 80 years ago. We give them saving authentic texts and illustrations to demonstrate the true "puzzling smell" of these little old puzzle gems.
To make these puzzles even more challenging we decided to propose them along with some modern challenges for the Galactic Takeover game as our Mini-Contest, which now is finished, though.

    The DAILY for
There are three daily puzzles, which change every day of the month.

    Subscribe to newsletter

The first will require you to revisit this page on other days of the week in order to discover what each day's number is! The second daily puzzle is taken from a book by "the puzzle king" Henry Ernest Dudeney called 536 Puzzles and Curious Problems , Souvenir Press 1968. See the MathsNet recommended books page . Dudeney (the name is pronounced to rhyme with "scrutiny") was born in Sussex, England in 1857. His father, John Dudeney, a shepherd, had taught himself mathematics, whilst tending his sheep on the downs above Lewes, 50 miles south of London. A self-taught mathematician also, Henry never went to college. His first book The Canterbury Puzzles was published in 1907. Others followed at intervals until his death in 1930. The third daily puzzle is courtesy of MathsMed . Visit the website for solutions.

NOWING that Titanic sank on its maiden voyage; mathematician Henry Ernest Dudeney boards the train named Titanic with a sinking heart. His heart will go on, but the train's heart, its engine, slows down, an hour after starting from Anglechester and going towards Clinkerton. Henry finds that he is travelling with an engineer and an astronomer, besides Nobel laureates - physicist Einstein and chemist Fritz Haber. The speed of the train induces sleep and they retire to their adjoining cabins. First the engineer's coffee maker catches fire. He smells the smoke, wakes up, unplugs the coffee maker, throws it out of the window, and goes back to sleep. Later, Haber the chemist smells smoke too. He wakes up and sees that a cigarette butt has set the trashcan on fire. He says to himself, "Hmm… how does one put out a fire? One can reduce the temperature of the fuel below the flash point and isolate the burning material from oxygen, or both. This could be accomplished by applying water." He picks up the trashcan, puts it in the shower stall, turns on the water, and, when the fire is out, goes back to sleep.
Nobel pastime When Nobel laureates have to pass time, they try to find out where in pi their birthdays first occur. If anyone of them was born February 11, 1949, he or she would search for the string '21149' in the digits of pi. Everyone's birthday is hidden in the digits of pi. Is your birthday there? If you can complete Henry's final answer, mail me at adityarishi99@yahoo.co.in.

    Geometric dissections on the web
A geometric dissection is a cutting of one or more figures into pieces that can be rearranged to form other figures. Dissections are often cast as puzzles, in which the object is to use as few pieces as possible. These geometrical puzzles fall under the category of mathematical recreations. Some dissections are relatively simple; others are deceptively simple, employing elegant approaches. A number of dissections can be found on the web:
