Grace Henry HRHA White Roses Oil on canvas 13.5" x 10.5" Grace Henry's "White Roses" formed part of the 1991 exhibition of works by Paul and Grace Henry at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin. The painting uses expressionistic and fluid brushwork along with a range of very subtle and calm tones to depict this beautiful still life of blue-greys and pinks. Henry has pitched the viewpoint slightly above the vase, situating the vessel near the edge of a table that is adjacent to a wall, thus providing the work with a framework of two planes viewed at an angle. The vase of white roses acts as the vertical linch-pin which, together with the table and the decorated wall, structures the whole composition and makes for a very interesting piece. Grace Henry was born Emily Grace Mitchell in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She was the second youngest of ten children of a Church of Scotland minister John Mitchell and his wife Jane Garden (who was related to Byron). Grace Mitchell was born into a family of comfortable means helped by private income. She was educated first at home by governesses and later at a London finishing school. Her mother's family had a house in Piccadilly and she may have stayed on in London after her education. In the late 1890's she was living in various lodgings in Aberdeen, exhibiting with the Aberdeen Artists' Society in 1898 and 1900. In the three years following, she studied in Brussels and at Paris ateliers, where she met and in 1903 married Paul Henry. She was by then thirty-five, and yet her life as Grace Henry and her career as a painter was only just beginning. Both were to last for a further fifty years, though she later separated from Paul.
