Russian version THE INTERPRETATION OF THE RIVERS' NAMES LABA AND KUBAN by Sergei V. Rjabchikov Let us examine the text of the end of the 8th c. A.D. - the beginning of the 9th c. A.D. inscribed on an Oriental coin from the Petershof treasure (Melnikova, Nikitin and Fomin 1984: 42, figure 3a) (see figure 1): Figure 1. As has been shown earlier (see my article The Interpretation of the Ancient Slavonic Records ), the text on another coin from this treasure reads Up(a)n 'the river Kuban'. There is reason to believe that the treasure belonged to a merchant from the town of Tamatarha (Tmutarakan') located at the Taman' Peninsula (now it is village Taman', Krasnodar Territory, Russia). So the three Greek (maybe pre-Cyrillic) letters l b and i of figure 1 read L(a)bi . This name compares with Russian Laba 'a branch of the river Kuban'. This word was also registered in the Karachay language (Vasmer 1986: 442). On the other hand, this river's name can preserve in the name of the Circassian aul (village) Ulyap (Republic of Adygea, Russia) which is situated not far from the river Laba. Really, the term Ulyap is split into U Lyap , i.e. 'Near the (river) Laba (Lyap)'. Interestingly, the preposition

MEDIA-MOST HOLDING LIQUIDATED The general meeting of shareholders of the Joint Stock Company Media-Most decided to liquidate the company today. Besides, the meeting also determined the procedure to convey the shares of 24 companies which remained at Media-Most, the shares are going to be handed over to Gazprom-Media. The shareholders appointed the members of the liquidation commission with Vladimir Shishmolkin at the head. Spokesmen for Gazprom-Media (who own 14.3% of shares of Media-Most besides NTV) did not show up at the meeting. Thus there has been a line drawn in the story of Media-Most’s collapse. The owner of the media holding, Vladimir Gusinsky actually lost his influence on the Russian policy on April 3 of the current year when the special meeting of NTV’s shareholders elected the new staff of Board of Directors with Boris Jordan at the head. The suit on liquidation of Media-Most was filed in the beginning of the current year by the fiscal police of Moscow’s Central district. But the lawyers of the holding managed to delay the decision, it was made several times but then cancelled by the district and arbitration courts of Moscow. Now when the control stock of shares is in the hands of the Russian gas giant Gazprom, the existence of the company with multimillion debts does not have any point. Besides, the shareholders of Media-Most (Vladimir Gusinsky, the owner, is implied here) lost the control over the editorial policy of mass media.

According to the book, Tatum was swallowed whole by a great local mobster, and again vomited back up upon the land, only with eleven bulletholes in him. Like any legend, the Tatum story has many popular interpretations. Tatum’s proponents, like his moronic self-publishing brother-in-law Rick Furmanek, insist that ol’ Paul was just a good guy businessman, worshiped by his employees, who was viciously blindsided by a gangland takeover. Those same proponents tend to see in the Tatum story a metaphor for the unhappy clash of ethical Western business with the ruthless criminal “biznes” of Russia. Tatum’s detractors, who among Westerners willing to go on the record are significantly fewer in number than Tatum’s proponents, maintain that Tatum was at best a fool who refused to read the writing on the wall, and at worst a corrupt shyster no better or worse than the people who had him killed.
