You know how women can be about their hair. I'm talking about the woman, that like Samson, feels her strength is in her hair. She approaches a salon like she's going to a lynching. She's a bundle of nerves the whole time she's in that chrome, leathered, oversized chair, watching every snip of the scissors in the mirror, and driving the haircutter crazy:
"Do you think that's too much?"
"Do you think that's too little?"
"Do you think it'll be OK?"
And then bursts into tears. Ok, that's me. And Philip, who has cut my hair for the past 20 years still likes me - and I, of course, adore him! :) Though I don't live in Connecticut anymore, when I go back to visit family, I also visit Philip. And he always treats me - and my hair - like we are the most important thing to him. He also has had this picture of me up on his walls for centuries. That's my first greyhound, Eliminator. We got a local paper to write about the plight of the greyhound in 1989. Philip offers a naturalproduct line . We got into one of our many philosophical discussions about life, and love, and how all things natural are the best.

On the Death of Dr. Benjamin Franklin
Thus, some tall tree that long hath stood
The glory of its native wood,
By storms destroyed, or length of years,
Demands the tribute of our tears. The pile, that took long time to raise,
To dust returns by slow decays:
But, when its destined years are o'er,
We must regret the loss the more. So long accustomed to your aid,
    The world laments your exit made;
So long befriended by your art,
Philosopher, 'tis hard to part! When monarchs tumble to the ground,
Successors easily are found: But, matchless FRANKLIN! what a few Can hope to rival such as YOU, Who seized from kings their sceptered pride, And turned the lightning darts aside.

"A powerful testament to the uncanny resilience of the human spirit. . . . It is rare for such an important historical document to be rendered with such profound artistic integrity." Kirkus Reviews "It is this will to live, this incredible capacity to create vast imaginary worlds in a narrowed universe, that makes the reading of this text, more a novel than a testimony, so gripping." "A heartbreaking, human document . . . that ranks comparably to Eugenia Ginzburg's In the Whirlwind and Nadezhda Mandelstam's Hope Against Hope ."Vladimir Tismaneanu, author of Reinventing Politics "A superb book. Without ever lapsing into self-pity, it allows the reader to enter the nightmarishly vindictive Romanian political prison system."Daniel Chirot, author of The Origins of Backwardness in Eastern Europe DESCRIPTION (back to top) "I have lived, alone, in a cell, 157,852,800 seconds of solitude and fear. Cause for screaming! They sentence me to live yet another 220,838,400 seconds! To live them or to die from them."from

    Philip Burnett Franklin Agee
CIA Case Officer in Latin America
Before Aldrich Hazen Ames was exposed as a high-ranking CIA official who betrayed the Agency and his country to the Soviets, the CIA claimed that it had never had a turncoat member. But the Agency's critics point to Philip Agee who has worked as a CIA Latin American case officer in the Agency in Mexico, a position he resigned in 1969 after twelve years of service. Agee said he was leaving the CIA for "personal reasons," but, after he left, he stated that he had rejected "my work in the CIA as a reaction against the corruption, ineffectiveness, and greed I found among the traditional political forces that we were supporting."
Thereafter Agee became a dedicated CIA basher. He moved to Cuba where he was given a house and servants and where he wrote a book about his CIA career. Agee always insisted that the Cuban government did not bring any pressure to him to write a critical portrait of his former employer, but the CIA later insisted that Agee was by then a member of the Cuban secret service, the DGI , which was an arm of the KGB

    The Era of the Individual:
A Contribution to a History of Subjectivity
    Alain Renaut
With a foreward by Alexander Nehamas
Translated by M. B. DeBevoise and Franklin Philip
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents With the publication of French Philosophy of the Sixties , Alain Renaut and Luc Ferry in 1985 launched their famous critique against canonical figures such as Foucault, Derrida, and Lacan, bringing under rigorous scrutiny the entire post-structuralist project that had dominated Western intellectual life for over two decades. Their goal was to defend the accomplishments of liberal democracy, particularly in terms of basic human rights, and to trace the reigning philosophers' distrust of liberalism to an "antihumanism" inherited mainly from Heidegger. In The Era of the Individual , widely hailed as Renaut's magnum opus, the author explores the most salient feature of post-structuralism: the elimination of the human subject. At the root of this thinking lies the belief that humans cannot know or control their basic natures, a premise that led to Heidegger's distrust of an individualistic, capitalist modern society and that allied him briefly with Hitler's National Socialist Party. While acknowledging some of Heidegger's misgivings toward modernity as legitimate, Renaut argues that it is nevertheless wrong to equate modernity with the triumph of individualism. Here he distinguishes between individualism and subjectivity and, by offering a history of the two, powerfully redirects the course of current thinking away from potentially dangerous, reductionist views of humanity.
