Generalizations of Fredholm Operators GEOMETRIC TOPOLOGY The study of spaces (manifolds) of dimensions 3 and 4 is a fascinating interplay of geometry, topology, analysis, algebra and ideas from mathematical physics. Related is the study of knots, with connections to chemistry and the structure of DNA. Often additional structures on manifolds, such as a metric, are the key to classification and structure results. With Iain Aitchison, a theory of metrics arising from decomposing 3-manifolds into polyhedra, has been introduced. Current research includes understanding 4-dimensional manifolds in a similar way. Contact: Hyam Rubinstein MINIMAL SURFACES Minimal surfaces have the property that each small piece of the surface has least area, so long as the boundary is kept fixed. Soap films give a physical picture of minimal surfaces in ordinary Euclidean space. Minimal surfaces can model interfaces between different materials and have played an important role in understanding the properties of general 3-dimensional spaces (manifolds). There are both smooth and polyhedral theories of minimal surfaces, using either calculus of variations or geometric topological methods. A classical method of representing smooth minimal surfaces in Euclidean space is using complex functions (the Weierstrass representation). A current problem is to extend this approach to 3-manifolds with different underlying curvature.

Applied Mathematics 4161 Integral Equations In the 1820s, Niels Henrik Abel, a Norwegian mathematician, stated and solved a problem that gave birth to the theory of integral equations. The problem is this: Determine a (continuous) curve in the vertical plane such that the time needed by a mass point to slide under the influence of gravity along this curve from a given positive height down to the horizontal axis is equal to a prescribed (monotone) function of the height. Abel showed that the problem reduces to that of solving an equation of the form where g is a given function. Since the unknown function y occurs under the integral sign, the above equation is called an integral equation . While Abel derived an inversion formula for y(t), his result had little influence on the future development of the theory of integral equations. It was only around the turn of this century when Vito Volterra (in 1896) and, above all, Ivar Fredholm (between 1900 and 1903) created the foundations of the modern theory of such equations. Albert Einstein narozen: 14. bøezna 1879 v Ulmu, Württemberg, Nìmecko zemøel: 18. dubna 1955 v Princetonu, New Jersey, USA Albert Einstein významnì pøispìl k zásadní zmìnì pohledu na fyzikální realitu. Jeho teorie relativity znamenala zvrat ve fyzice a patøí k vrcholùm intelektuálního umìní. V roce 1886 Albert Einstein navštìvoval školu v Mnichovì. Od 6 do 13 let se uèil hrát na housle a získal také náboženské židovské vzdìlání. O dva roky pozdìji zaèal studovat na gymnáziu Luitpold. Od roku 1891 se vìnoval studiu matematiky. V roce 1894 se Einsteinova rodina pøestìhovala do Milána, ale Einstein zùstal v Mnichovì. V roce 1895 se neúspìšnì pokusil o pøijetí na Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule v Zürichu, aby zde získal diplom inženýra elektrotechniky. Albert Einstein v roce 1896 odmítl nìmecké obèanství a v roce 1899 požádal o švýcarské obèanství, které mu bylo udìleno v roce 1901. Po neúspìšném pokusu o studium na ETH v Zürichu Einstein navštìvoval støední školu v Aarau. Chtìl se znovu touto cestou pokusit o studium na ETH. V Aarau napsal èlánek, ve kterém popsal své plány do budoucna. Napsal, že by chtìl studovat matematiku a fyziku a stát se uèitelem pøírodních vìd, zejména teoretické èásti, protože má pøedpoklady pro abstraktní matematické myšlení, pøedstavivost a praktické schopnosti.

Register as Member FREE Group meeting about Software Reuse The Software Reuse meeting gathered about 30 members. Lars Fredholm started the meeting talking about RAIN. He said that the association now has doubled its size to 229 members. He also mentioned some of the board activities and that they are constantly looking for speakers, If you know of a speaker send a message to speaker@rain-oo.org Adriana Prieto presented the agenda and the practical details of the meeting. After that she introduced Johan Näsman from Rational. He answered questions about Rational products for about 10 minutes. Adriana announced the evenings main speaker Partik Jonsson from IT-arkitekterna. Partik Jonsson has a long history of working at Rational together with Ivar Jacobsson. He is together with Ivar one of the coauthors of the books OOSE (Object Oriented System Engineering) and Software Reuse. Partik started by describing his book Software Reuse and let the audience drive his presentation by telling what areas they thought he should cover. This intuitive way of holding the presentation was very popular. He described paths to scalable Reuse where Components and Component Based Development is important. Business Reuse and the management acceptance is one of the keys. For those who was not familiar with RUP (Rational Unified Process) he held a briefing on UML and RUP. He even had the guts to say that some of his diagrams where better done than Rationals.
